I really dont want to be carrying those bike levers on my bike for when I need to change a tube during a long distance ride. Can I use a flathead screwdriver instead?
@blastofo In this video we're using professional grade aluminum levers - granted they're pretty big, but look for smaller levers on our website, like the Park Tool TL-1's.
They're cheap, light and small. Definitely easier to carry than screwdrivers, plus screwdrivers would likely damage your rim.
Best instructional video for changing road bike tubes, period. I saw another video where they used the bike levers to get the tube back on which I learned from this video is a big fucking NO. Lastly, this guy sounds Russian. Russians don't fuck around.
This isn't my video you fool. I went to it cause i was having trouble changing the tube on my bike. You're just a fucking idiot and anyone else who complained is too. What was so hard to understand? Make the video bigger, pause, rewind, i don't know... JUST WORK IT OUT!!!! IF THIS GUY DIDN'T GIVE YOU ENOUGH INSTRUCTIONS YOU MUST BE AN UNEDUCATED RETARD!!!!!!!!! jesus christ, shut up and try to fix your bike or pay 10 bucks and get it fixxed for you.. Ps. dont worry about the helmet ;)
Cheers dude! Props to your vid. I've borrowed my old mans road bike whilst he's overseas and i've only ever ridden bmx when i was younger. I struggled for a bit and my hands are back but I couldn't have done it without you mate! THANK YOU for saving me $15AU and a trip to the bike shop!!! :)
Thanks! I punctured two tubes and took it to a bike shop. I should have watched your video first before trying to do it by myself. I used the lever when installing the tire and it always punctured the tubes.
@quayinlock - You acknowledge that you need more close up shots in other comments but then imply i can't follow instructions? I was able to complete the second part of the task by watching another video so i don't think the problem is on this end. Still thanks for the 1st part of the video as i previously stated, but when dealing with something more complicated than changing the tube you need some closer shoots.
@n1lla when did i say the video needs more close-ups!?!? any more in-depth than that and a chimpanzee would be fixing it for you. This video is very clear and precise in the filming and the narrating, LISTEN UP NEXT TIME BUD! B-)
@quayinlock - If this isn't your video why do you care? If it is than other people did call out the lack of of close-up shots. You tell me to 'LISTEN UP' but isn't the purpose of video to show??? This isn't radio. have a nice life in the fantasy world you live in where everything you do is perfect...
It is done! Two new tires are on my bike. Remon... you are a genius! I'm now going out to ride - and hopefully they won't blow off! :-) Actually - it's akin to packing your own parachute... all the skills in the long term add confidence. Thank you so very much! God bless.

... say a prayer. Hope for the best. Rode my tires down to the weave. Going out riding later today. Your video has given me the confidence to do it myself. In Wisconsin - changing front and back - for the first time. Really a very, very good video! Hopefully I can do this.
The hardest part of the process is trying to place the final part of the tyre back in the rim...you must have hands of steel to do this without a trye lever...at this point I've found no matter how hard I twist I can't get it in without a tyre lever. I'm using Shimano 622 x 15c rims. Are you sure this can be done without tyre levers no matter what kind of rim or tyre? It is either an impressive feat of strength or there is some subtle trick you are doing that makes this possible.
@Mavoz You're right - some tires are quite hard to snap back on the rim (Specialized Armadillos come to mind). The trick is really to start from the bottom of the rim (where the rim/tire touch the ground) and move any slack towards the top, converging from both sides with each hand.
If you're really having trouble with your tire, I suggest a tool like the Park Tool PTS-1.
The worst thing is finally getting on your tire only to realize you've pinched it and must start over.
Thanks for the video..great job. It is the most thorough explanation I have seen....some of the others almost say 'pop the wheel back on'...but give little details on the specific tricks involved. It is good to have a slower, step by step explanation...only thing that could improve it a little is a couple close up shots. Thanks for your work and explanation!
@robertgg1980 lol I did the same. And I snapped my cheap nylon tyre lever after a lot of struggling to fit the tyre back on! I should have watched this vid first!
This my friend is sheer genius. I had spent 3 hours or so trying to change an inner tube and looked at several vids on here and still couldn't do it. I just couldn't get the tyre back on. Your vid at 07:20 explains how to do it perfectly. 5 minutes later it was on! Danke Auf Weidersen ! Genius vid, absolutely class.
Good basic vid, but another version of how to change a tire when you are on a ride and don't have the bike frame. That's when most flats occur and any tips to do it more efficiently and easily would be appreciated.
Nice vid. Just remember, total amateurs watch this video. In the re-installing the tire section, you throw out a lot of confusing nomenclature and don't show what you're doing. Totally lost me. Maybe some more close-ups, too. Besides that, perfect.
Thanks for the video. I bought a replacement tire that has like three layers of kevlar in it and is solid as shit. Took me over an hour to get the thing on but I got there. Wouldn't want to have to go through all this on the side of a road somewhere.
Thank you SO much for this video. I am new to cycling and got my first flat last weekend. I had never changed a tire before and I was completely freaked out - but thanks to my iPhone and your video I made it through. Thanks so much. Given that I was 40 miles outside of my point of origin, I'm really not sure what I would have done without this helpful guide.
I just had another flat tube and it is definitely done for. Tire 24 x 1.75 in size. Is it possible to replace with a new tube that is 24 x 24 x 1.9 - 2.125 sized one?
@remon2727 Hi there, the skinnier valve is called a presta valve. You can either use a bike pump (which does both schrader and presta valves) or use a presta valve adapter which converts your bike's presta valve into a conventional schrader so that you can use a normal pump or a compressor.
Thank you so much for this video. I have only ever changed one tyre before (with help) and after watching this video I was able to do both tyres on my road bike in 25 minutes (yeah, I know, I'll never make pit crew!). A great trick to deflate the tube again to get the tyre seated right at the end.
Check your tire pressure! Your chances of puncturing a road tube are MUCH higher if you're low on air. Look at the recommended pressure on the sidewall.
First, you need to stretch the tyre before mounting it, as some of them if not pre-stretch will be almost impossible to mount especially the 700x20c ones.
Second, you must not tighted up you wheel by rotating the lever of the skewer, you must tighten up the skewer from the cap side.
you're right about stretching the tires, especially foldable 20-23C tires. They're usually folded flat and it is a good idea to give them a little bit of a shape before attempting to mount them.
About the skewer, it is common practice to tighten with the skewer lever (since it is easier to turn with just 1 finger), and then micro-adjust with the cap on the other side. As long as your lever is positioned properly when you're done.
Thanks for the informative video. Why is it not good to start cycling on the smallest cogs? Can it stretch the chain? What damage (if any) can occur to the real dérailleur ?
Because if you were on your smallest cog AND smallest chainring, then you would be "cross-chaining" which puts unnecessary stress on your derailleurs and chain. You should instead be on a large cog and small chainring or vice versa...
watched this video, was a complete novice at changing a flat before.. went back out and in less than 5 minutes flat fixed and I was back on the road. (A previous attempt at changing a tire ended badly, like 4 blocks later another blow out). Thanks
Generally speaking, we notice people understand how to operate a wrench and nut, whereas many do not know how to properly use a quick release. For example it is a common sight to see quick release levers left in 'open' position but screwed on very tight.
