he is wonderful! a real tragic loss to the ballet world and the artistic world in general. who knows what he would've accomplished as a performer and beyond. thank you for sharing these clips.
IMOA, the Le Corsaire variatiions I have seen, aside from Soloviev's, lacked luster. They were either too flimsy (not a strong enough presence), too feminine, or just too amateur (w/o discipline). He makes you believe he is the character. That is what i like most about his dancing. Whatever he does, he thoroughly emerses himself in it. I was not interested in male dancers until I saw him. He is absolutely a great joy to watch.
@pediatrapaola : there are many of us who agree with you. enormous charisma is not synonymous to great art. Soloviev and Vasiliev were greater artists than Rudy but Rudy's circumstances gave him more publicity.
l really saw too many times rudy making really low level performances, may be danced too much may be a not correct way of life at the end of 70's his dancing standard was already very bad
He is very beautiful to watch, almost other worldly or unusual. I was compelled to post this comment after watching this for several weeks now. I used to dance ballet and jazz, but I was never really good at it. I'm more into the choreography of it. However, I know a great dancer when I see one. I just found out about him a couple of weeks ago, accidentally. I've seen many male dancers but none have captured the spirit of grace and beauty of dance quite the way he has in almost every performance
I share your opinion, although I like Misha also very much. But Soloviev and Vasiliev are unique, Vladimir is a virtuoso, very manly and a great great actor.
Unfortunately, when people are using to seeing horrible dancers that they are convinced are great, then when they see a true phenomenon such as the amazing Soloviev, they have no idea what they are seeing. Calling Soloviev choppy is like calling Ms. Universe ugly. Soloviev's unbelievable dancing makes Ms. Universe seem ugly in comparison.
Makarova knew what she was talking about. Nobody ever could do the entre chat six like Soloviev. His elevation and hang time were beyond belief. He also was a great partner.
Choppy? uffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff the things I have to read in you tube, choppy chippy chuppy but silly silly you, chunky monkey. To call soloviet choppy!!! what will be next?
I've never seen a film of him dancing before - thank you so much! Completely amazing technique - high, fast, light, clean, strong ..... he had it all!
I didn't immediately recognize him and when I looked under info and saw only one name, I thought - Of Course! no other explainations needed. Thank you so much for the Soloviev videos as well as all your other fabulous videos.
Ever since I was a young student, I have dreamed of seeing more films of Soloviev. I have a "Sleeping Beauty" with him, but that was all until now. God Bless you for giving us this great gift. Who knows what demons caused him to take his own life? Thank God, we have these films to remember him by. Thank you; I have tears in my eyes.
THanks you for posting, Ilyaballet (and Merluzasfritas, for calling my attention, muchissimas gracias); I have wanted to see this for SO long. look how deep he LANDS after that double-passe jump. And hte entrechats with the extra opening. AMazing clarity in hthe legs, and such heart. Truly heroic dancing. His shoulders are too high, though.
thanks about the shoulders... but male dancers back then had rather bad arms compared to today... look at nureyev and this guy... in their turns the arms are all over... ofc in that age it was marvellous; they were the BEST of those days... RIP
I mean look at his turns in the Ali variation, which Baryshnikov copies in his version (see for eg, "The Turning Point") Nureyev could never turn like that. Nureyev was all about sex appeal. As I said earlier, in some ways, Nureyev got the easy way out by coming to the West.
Thankyou so very much 'Illyaballet' for posting these very important Soloviev clips. That his talent was phenomenal is obvious for all of us to experience now. What a wickedly short career ..... does anyone know the story surrounding his death?
Holly shit!!! I had never heard about him! so he was Nureyev's contemporary?? How the hell he didn't become THE ballet star?...well I supose history is a misterious power: I saw the Moscow ballet competition in wich Misha won the gold medal and Funakawa got silver... and Funakawa was clearly most gifted.. BACK THEN.
well because Nureyev and Misha decided to defect, whereas Soloviev decided to remain in Russia. He was much better than Nureyev, they both graduated from the same year in 1958. That's part of the tragedy of the story.
Thank you for posting these uniq videos!I have heard many times about Soloviev from my Russian friends, now I understand, why! He was a brilliant dancer!
That's why he came to the West, because he knew that no Soloviev existed outside of Russia. In some ways, Nureyev got the easy way out of the competition.
@qbendanny1 //I AGREE---those entrechat's are amazing and TEXTBOOK---out-in-out-in-out-in!! This was one of the guys in the 60s that made me give up my ballet dreams// Yes, Nureyev (took many classes beside him) had good and BAD days, and NEVER looked like this! The DANCIN' MAN
@dancinman17 in my opinion rudy despite his great fame and all he did for male dancing is very overrated, soloviev is one other level as volodia vasiliev also.l saw live many times rudy and vasiliev ,no comparation among them
Sacré Danseur!!! ça serait bien qu'un jour l'Opéra en 1 come ça!

Soloviev committed suicide -- shot himself at his dacha.
Terrible loss... great suffering must have lead to that.
There is so little of Soloviev that one can see at this time.
