The flick, reinforced by its music, perfectly captures the theme of redemption... the ability of even the most violent and ruthless people to find some kernel of inner goodness that allows them to transcend their origins and their own crimes.

The historical accuracy in the various scenes is breathtaking. It took me back to the stories that Dad used to tell about the WW1 era and the Roaring Twenties.

Like "Once Upon a Time in America," it constantly reminds me of songs that Dad used to sing, pictures of family members from that period, the cars that obsessed both Dad and my favorite novelist John O'Hara. Ah, the roaring twenties!
