"he does comedy, but does it as if he is better than it"... lol. i think that really sums up lee's wildly intelligent n subversive brand of comedy. in my personal opinion stewart lee, dylan moran n eddie izzard are the finest stand up comics of our generation. intellectuals who treat comedy like a post-modern art form which does what it says on the can, but at the same time doing a satirical running commentary on the can. that's clever n beyond the realm of most standard stand up comedians.
Richard Herring respectfully makes the point that Lee is in danger of becoming the 'new mcintyre', and being 'bad for comedy', since there are so many young people coming into comedy doing essentially the same act. It's an interesting point imo
@furQ Lee seems like someone who will change their act when they notice it's not working or is having a negative impact. He said in his book he realised he had to stop doing the going-into-the-audience-pretending-to-have-a-nervous-breakdown thing when he saw younger comedians copy it.
@Sodhats Huh, I didn't know that. I've a ton of respect for Lee, and he seems the type to be perspicacious about his influence on the comedy scene. There's a strong thread (haw) in the Carpet Remnant World show, about his attempts to 'curate' his audience.
@furQ interesting, although i would say that Lee is a pioneer of this kind of stand up comedy, whereas mcintyre is doing the same kind of material that others have been doing for years before. Perhaps I am biased because i find Stuart Lee very funny but think Michael Mcintrye is awful.
I hate it when people try to distance themselves from a 'thing' by using the precursor 'that', like your grandma saying 'them mobile phones' or 'that pokemans thingy'...
Even though I prefer the topics covered in the first series (the actual stand up was arguably a bit stronger as well), ditching the sketches was a very good move. Makes series 2 much more enjoyable overall.
@Sodhats im not so sure, a couple of the topics he covers seem to stretch a little too long without being funny. But of course Stewart lee's worst stand up is better than michael mcintyre's best.

Well, Mr MacIntyre certainly isn't to everyone's taste but without those kind of acts, Mr Lee would have nothing to subvert.

Laughter doesn't seem the right response to his humour. I find the audience laughs in the wrong places e.g. when he swears.
"The Office" sitcom was much better without audience laughter. And "The League of Gentlemen".
Are there any videos of Stewart talking straight to camera?

@furQ Three things to point out. (Subject to change)
1. The fact that people copy him doesn't make him a bad comedian or mean that he should change his act
2. I very much doubt there are many people out there who can successfully pull this kind of comedy off
3. It's better to have people copying comedy that challenges not only your mind but also the conventions of the art form.
4. Michael Mcintyre isn't anything original. Before him, tv was already saturated with observational comedy.

Ditching the sketches and getting more Armando interviews made this series the best thing this year.

@Sodhats a definite improvement by getting rid of the sketches, and bringing in the red button interviews from series 1.
