St. Linus took his place. Then St. Anacletus took his place then St. Clement I, etc. It is called Apostolic Succession and continues with Pope Benedict to day. The Church also rose so greatly because it was founded by Christ himself and is guided by God, the Holy Spirit.

Again how does the early church members being martyred have a bearing on the greatness of the church? I would think the church becoming so great while its members were being martyred points to the validity of the Church.

If a religion doesn't believe itself to be true, what is the religion's point at all? It isn't about feeling superior! Goodness, Catholics don't even believe we can be certain about our own salvation! We believe our Church is the one true Church though, and if we didn't, there would be no point in being a member of it (because it would be "just another church.") Superiority has NOTHING to do with it.

Why the insistence on exclusivity? Acknowledging the legitimacy of other churches would in no way make the Catholic Church "just another church." Regardless, the Catholic concept of salvation- God would have to be incredibly cruel to go along with it IMO. The mindset of worshipers who think the majority of people in the world are doomed- it's a wacked mindset. You practice a religion of intolerance but to each his own.

We are not intolerant. We believe that members of other faiths can be saved if their ignorance is no fault of their own. We don't "doom" anyone. The document released is talking about Apostolic Succession (AS), and these churches (with exception to the Anglicans) will most likely not claim to have AS. Therefore, we don't believe them to be "Churches" in the fullest sense, because AS is one of our requirements. We're not condemning anyone to hell. I hope that clears things up. :-)

Fr. Corapi has also made the point that many Protestants who are good Christians and who love the Word of God; set us Catholics a good example at times. I recently had to attend an Anglican (Church of Ireland) service and I was very impressed by how devout and religious those in attendance were and how they prayed and sang great traditional hymns with conviction. In contrast, when I attend Mass sometimes I despair and get the impression that the hearts of many Catholics are not really in it.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church deals fully with the question of "salvation outside the Church," and the Catholic Church has NEVER taught that all non-Catholics are going to hell. BTW: I am sure that there ARE people who think all Catholics are going to hell--and it bothers me so little, I have never even bothered to do the research to find out who they are.
