I think the Kaluga (Huso dauricus) is larger than the Arapiama....The River Baluga get up to18 ft. and 2,200 lbs. They do spend part of their lives in saltwater like Baluga's do, but they are listed as a freshwater fish.

Actually i'm pretty sure the white lake sturgeon is bigger. they range from 5 ft 300 pounds to around 20 feet 1500 pounds.. They're on the endangered species list.

@stevenslat I would believe you if there WAS an attack record. I know for a fact they can only stay out of the water for an hour. Anything longer and they dehydrate. They're simply not an overly aggressive species. I've swam with large gar before and they show no interest in biting anything larger than themselves unless defending themselves or their eggs. @WireMan7620 I'm not talking about river fish. It's in the Lake. The lake wasn't always there. It used to be a town that in the early 40's got bought out and evacuated. Then after they knew noone was in it they flooded it and created the lake. Divers have been to the bottom to see if the vehicles that were flooded had any fuel or oil in them and when they looked in a superbeatle it got rolled over by a fish.
Just the description of the scenery in that lake sounds awesome! I kinda want to get an underwater camera case and take some photos of this place. It sounds incredibly surreal! Blue catfish can get pretty big.

I have to request that the title of this vid is changed. Arapaima are definitely not the heaviest or longest, lake sturgeon and chinese paddlefish both exceed 20 feet historically, and freshwater stingray is known to exceed 1,000 lbs. not to mention the mekong cat (650+) and land locked sturgeon of other species. There are more than a few species that far exceed the size of the arapaima and the search continues.

I would say this needs to be a little more specific. As in this is the LONGEST freshwater fish, because the Mekong (spelling?) Catfish weighs a whole hell of a lot more than this fish does, as do some other catfish.
Actually, the best catfish and alligator gar do is around 6-8 feet in length, and these are rare occasions... A fish like this that normally grows to 15 feet is astonishing!

wels catfish have been found in russia weighing in excess of 600lbs and 16feet long. thats only a few. there may be bigger ones. either way imagine catching that on rod and line. it would be impossible

catfish is the largest freshwater fish. maybe not 15 ft, but the record is 646 pounds. a 646 pound arapaima would have to be like 40-50 ft long.

In truth no1 knows what the biggest freshwater fish is. There are rumours that there are cats as long as a school buses in various deep water lakes & rivers, but the only giant cat fish that poeple of caught is the mekong cat fish i belive

They are prolly the biggest AVRAGE SIZE freashwater fish in teh world but they catch massive catfish in the arksas river where i live, these things are littlery hundreds of pounds. they sit in front of the lock and dams and open thir mouths and eat like a fucking crocidile plus fighting the current force all day and night. but i wouldent eat one cus they look pinkish grey and nasty

I would say this needs to be a little more specific. As in this is the LONGEST freshwater fish, because the Mekong (spelling?) Catfish weighs a whole hell of a lot more than this fish does, as do some other catfish.

Actually, the best catfish and alligator gar do is around 6-8 feet in length, and these are rare occasions... A fish like this that normally grows to 15 feet is astonishing!

Belugas and Kalugas (Sturgeons) are the largest freshwater fishes.
Belugas can grow up to 8.6m long and Kalugas 8-10m

Oh, My bad. That's kinda interesting. Still, The largest freshwater fish is a Catfish. Those monsters get to be like 10 feet long, The record is 2.7 meters. A sturgeon isn't a true feshwater fish, Therefore it doesn't count. They spend a great deal of time in salt water.

dumbarses, this species IS the worlds largest exclusive freshwater fish. And yes, for you smartypants out there, the Sturgeon is much larger, but they are not exclusively freshwater fish. The Sturgeon spend most of their lives at sea, and only swim into freshwater rivers to spawn.
