not many other musicians can say that they have left such a great musical legacy. Dash Crofts and Jimmy Seals were meant to write and perform together. I saw them way back when and it was one of the best concerts i have ever been to in my life. They are the musicians musician , they played all kinds of music and changed around on instruments. You have no idea how tallented they were, you would just have to had to have been ther to believe it.
I listened 2 all kinds of rock& roll&pop growing up in the 70's.DoobieBros, Stones,EJ,TheWho,&a lot of Motown, but my favourite group from that period was Seals&Crofts(which a lot of my friends found kind of weird) I loved their soaring harmonies,&catchy melodies.Only later did I find out why they were such great musicians, because they honed their craft by so many yrs on the road.Too bad it takes nothing to be a"talent" today. I feel fortunate I saw them live once & wish they would tour again.
I could be wrong I just saw Joe Smith as trying to be funny and maybe failing in the attempt! I as a new Baha'i joined a few others from Fredericton NB and went south of the border to Bangor Maine in March 1974. We all really enjoyed the concert and their talk later. Time lead them to South America and their music is still with them. Its not all about success on the world or North American Stage!!
I'm afraid we will never see the likes of a Seals and Croft duo ever again....SO SAD!!! Now we get to listen to all of the talentless rubbish being put out today.
Good gravy, Joe Smith is a real prick. I LOVED and still love Seals and Crofts music. there is nothing like listening to Summer Breeze while driving through the country with the windows down. Or listening to Hummingbird when driving in the early morning as the sunrises or driving towards the sunset. Joe can just shut up and die.
@mojorisen74 It is amazing how this guy has managed to rub so many S&C fans the wrong way but it is great that so many folks still appreciate this timeless, beautiful music. Take Care! :)
@mojorisen74 Who is this schmuck Joe Smith anyway? Is he dead or is he alive somewhere that I can email him before he dies and let him know what a had-been loser prick he is?
@spudnutsncoffe...yeah, thanks for the right-on comment..joe smith was indeed one rude bastardo, he was the president of warner brothers records, seals & crofts record label..nice support from their "boss", huh? jeez, with friends like that who needs enemas (thanx sprout for the visual).someone give joe smith a hot lava enema after such an insulting "interview"..jimmy & dash were family friends, the real deal, genuine lads with talent unmatched. unique--no one ever could duplicate their sound
Any audio/video clip that reminds me of what I need to do to improve my own music gets "favorited" and or "upvoted" and or "saved". This performance is MAGIC!
Ooohhh, darlin' Jimmy Seals with his sweet 'lil fiddle, sweet gawd he could play that beauty...Dash Crofts, such a Texaan beauty, strummin' his mandolin, so fine...and their, "Hummingbird" will surely break you (in a good way!) with its stunning lyrics, about the status of mankind, as told from the Baha'i perspective (which is my family's religion...) This duo surely will go down in history as one of the planet's finest stewards of goodness, beauty & light.."O source of our Being..Jill Jeffers
One of my favorites. I think the LP Year of Sunday was their best. I wish I never gave my LP's away years ago as you can't find Year of Sunday on CD. I wonder why? Anyone have a clue. Thanks for posting.
Agreed, could (Joe Smith) have been anymore disrepectful to Dash Crofts, cracking about "no stage presence"!?Then poor Dash Crofts saying, "thanks for your moral support." (you could feel/see his upset).. Wow, I often wonder why Seals & Crofts just disappeared, really in their prime. With a studio head & that attiutude, I bet it only took one non best-selling album, and ol' Joe Smith kicked them to the curb, such crunk. These lads had talent up the ying-yang..& still should be around! ~Peace
For all the hating on the WB president, he did promote a band that today would have to get their word out via MySpace. Do you think the current president of WB would sign two middle-aged guys with a mandolin singing Baha'i scriptures?
Literally one of the all time best bands of the last 50 years. Extreme integrity, heart, harmony, sweetness and comfort. I had grown up with them, but had no idea where they came from...always wanted to know, but never had the time and energy to find out.
thanks so much for an absolutely perfect piece of entertainment, history and information.
Seals and Crofts are great texan musicians and they are always well remembered here in Peru after all these years.i know that the brothers Seals Dan and Jimmy are on the road with Dash sometimes.their Summer Breeze are a trademark song for summertime season indeed.
Bassist Bobby Lichtig played with the band through much of its early work and a terrific talent in his own right. I can only hope that Joe Smith, to quote Harry Chapin, would find
"full time consideration of another endeavor (to) be in order!"
Find that song he's referring to on YouTube. It's called Mr. Tanner, and I read in the Harry Chapin biography that it actually made a record exec (maybe this guy?!) cry, the first time he heard it.
I saw them in concert at the Halifax (N.S.)Forum in 1976.They had some extra band members including a drummer,a bass_man and a really amazing lead guitar player who was about 19 yrs old. They sounded amazing, just as good as their records. Also they asked if anyone wanted to stay after the concert, they would give a short lecture on the basics of their Bahai faith!
Yeah, that dork was the head of WB music? They bust out an incredible tune in font of his face & he asks to get back to the Money Music? I like to watch it & see that dork squirm during their song, wow is he out of place.
Did Joe Smith actually say "It's time to get back to the 'money music'"? And this after behaving as though the "fiddle music" was an anomalous bit of hick music? What a dipshit.
Oh thank you. I met Jim Seals after a Seattle concert in 1974. He introduced me to the Baha'i Faith. He and his brother Dan are the sweetest people I know. I am no longer a Baha'i, but that time is very special to me, and this video means very much to me, thank you.
Man, I'm just going by what I see. If you think I'm wrong, fine. Are you familiar with critique, or didn't you make it through college? After this, I'm rubber, you're glue.
Great music stands the test of time. I remember hearing this in fairly heavy rotation on 93KHJ in Los Angeles as a kid. It still sounds fresh. Sweet vocal harmonies.
First heard of S&C seeing them on the Smothers Brothers Show, 1968. I'd guess my favorite song is Hollow Reed. First chance to see them live was 1990, in Hampton Beach, NH. The opening act was the great Little River Band, and when S&C made it out to the stage, Dash said THEY should have been opening for the LRB! At the end of the show everyone came out and sang a couple of each other's songs. It was quite good.
Great, evocative videos, a reminder of their unique talent. Thanks for posting them.
S&C at their best - the way I first saw them in Boston in '72, as a trio with Bobby Lichtig (my bass hero). Been looking for video from that era a long time . THANKS!! - Dyno
Yeah, you know me really well. Check out between 3:00 and 4:00. "Believe me, with your stage presence you guys should be worried when I leave the stage." Crofts says, "Thank you for your moral support." I just sense that the remark wasn't well received by Crofts.
Such great composers....they link and connect every pane of music up and down so smoothly and melodiously!!! They are the real gurus!

I don't know who that arrogant little man Joe...whoever was- I didn't hear any poetry come out of his mouth..
Seal and Crofts never never needed him on the stage. I sincerely hope someone told him to STFU!
PURE TALENT!!
I keep coming across gems from this time period and I feel great nostalgia for a time when music was truly beautiful and lyrical.
Thanks!!
