I used tab for a long time. I can figure things out by ear now, but it helps as a way to develop a knowledge base of the tones in relation to the fret board. As you learn things, you pick ear will start to pick it up. Don't assume that this person of which you speak is at the same level as you. I don't think any one person could learn things by ear as soon as they start. And if you say you can, you're either a prodigy or lying out your ass.
