  • Happy 65th birthday Dude!

  • I did not know what 'est' meant...this is what I found:

    "Psychotherapy and other Disciplines

The est training is sometimes confused with other disciplines, yet it is none of them. est is not group therapy, sensitivity training, encounter, positive thinking, meditation, hypnosis, mind control, behavior modification, religion, or anything else you might think of. It is not therapy; it is not “human potential;” not psychology...."

  • @katrastrophy "...est is concerned with transformation. ... Change is substituting one thing for another thing. Transformation is a fundamental alteration of the context in which one holds or observes everything. est is concerned with context; therapy is concerned with content. est is concerned with transforming the context in which one views and experiences everything in life. est does not change what one knows; it transforms the way in which one knows."

  • Google ads f*ck off!

  • So addicted to David Bowie!!!

  • I love that all my favorite Bowie songs are not plastered on commercial radio, diminishing their true depth and artistic beauty. Thank you.

  • Amazing that this album was originally a failure when David first put it out in the 70s

  • excellent,,but ane , sane, sane "open the dog", ouvrez le chien ?? he put that in at the end as a teaser..

  • excellent

  • This song made me not regret being forced to learn the recorder in 4th grade.

  • that was fucking AWESOME- please do this for every song I love-what youve done is eqally profound as what David wrote and recorded-it's perfect-just perfect-and I bought this record 37 years ago- you blew me away-

  • Love this song! So damn wicked.

  • David Bowie... One Insanely Gifted Musician..... Word!

  • @TVybe Genius

  • Great sound quality. Thanks for posting.

  • @CatFiain You're very welcome. : )

  • so long ago. " He followed me momey, can I keep him"

  • love the art work to the song very cool

  • Day after Day they take some Brain Away!

  • one of his best..shows he's a great artist!!...

  • one of his best..shows he's a great artist!!

  • one of his best..shows he's an artist!!

  • Anthony Edward Visconti - great stuff man - at first I thought it was Herbie Flowers

  • So much truth

  • @DanBlabbers Indeed!

  • this song means a lot to me...sad that people become mentally ill & had lobotomies in the past. not me. liked your vids. Great song David's voice is beautiful as ever..great interpretation as ever. great musicians.

  • Was this album Bowie at his songwriting best? No contracts, no fame and no previous chart topper live up to??? Wonderful. And what about" Ouvre le Chein"? I have no French, but does it really mean "Open the Dog"??

  • @Landulphcounter Yes it does mean that but I think there was something else behind that. I have to say this is my favourite period for Bowie as a songwriter. But every artist moves on and hopefully grows which is what he did. I think we always love the songs that attracted us to the artist in the first place. :)

  • @thegasworks okay then, but is it a problem how watching a video of somebody playing "Fame" on Rock Band 3 got me attracted to bowie's music?

  • @thegasworks

The “chien” is also the hammer of a firearm in french.

Ouvre le chien = open the hammer (Implied message : commit suicide ?).

  • @thegasworks The phrase comes from a line in Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra." This work heavily influenced a lot of the other songs on this particular album, but he's alluding to this: "Thy wild dogs want liberty; they bark for joy in their cellar when thy spirit endeavoureth to open all prison doors."

  • @Landulphcounter I do agree Bowie was at his best in this early period (man who sold, hunky and ziggy)...the music is deep...and Ronno contributing in full !

  • @Landulphcounter thanks for your question and the answer by the other poster...was wondering too, such a fanstastic amazing kick ass rockin' album- beautiful lyrics, so awe-inspiring just dreamy, then rocks briliiantly, so poetic. Just love his poetry, always induces wonder and awe. ... JUST GIVE ME SOME GOOD 'OLE LOBOTOMY!!!

  • I had ONE bumper sticker on ONE car in my life. It said "Bowie IS God".

  • @skyypilot Isn't it great to know you were right!!!

  • this song makes me cry a litttle. don't catch me alone with this song playing, cuz i'm doing my best Bowie at the top of my lungs

  • @DuhDuhDuhDoodle Me too!!!

  • @thegasworks ...i was always sure that behind your "scaring" feline face is hidden a very sensitive heart,..isn't it,majestic tiger??excuse my wandering through your vids,i find it funny....maybe it's the beginning of an early senile dementia..ahah...and my friendship,anyway..P.....Do you EXACTLY remember my name..i'm..my..mind....OMG...AHAHAH...,HUGS !!

  • @mymindourdream OMG is it a sign of early dementia to find me sensitive!!? lol Don't worry about the name - it was all in our dream anyway :)

  • great vid love the art, its very BOWIE. you should collect some bowie art and make a vid paying homage to that.

  • @GothicGirlBassist Yeah, I'd like to do that but can never find much of his art on the net!!

  • Incredible song

  • I was 14 when l first seen bowie.He's cool,then and now.

  • well done.. and perfect for my 'Arts and Poetry' playlist! some interesting artwork to go with the song. thanks for posting :)

  • I suppose so Tom......lol

  • still awsomE!

  • Thanks and Happy New Year!

  • Its Amazing man

  • I forgot how good this video is....very good!

  • : )

  • Amazing thankyOU!

  • my goodness, this can be taken as deep as one wishes

  • Yep - hours of fun! lol

  • definitely the best bowie album ever. chrisharro's description is pretty accurate. I was into this album when it came out, and no less so today.

  • What does personal madness mean compared to a world gone mad? This is my favourite Bowie song from my favourite Bowie LP - The Man Who Sold The World depicts madness, murder, megalomania, sexual depravity, bleak loneliness and the dark dreams of the Gods, with music that totally supports the lyrics - particularly Tony Visconti's doom laden bass, Mick Ronson's fabulous guitar playing and the droning male backing vocals. Uncomfortable, challenging and totally brilliant! Thanks for posting...

  • What a wonderful, insightful comment. I agree! : )

  • Mint song

  • Yeah, I love it!

  • The absolute best bowie! great video MICK RONSON!!!! wow what a sound

  • No one quite equaled him! Thanks :)

  • one of my favourite Bowie songs!!!! thankyou so much

  • You're very welcome!

  • david bowie is the best

  • lol @ the fucking idiot......

  • Forget it, your gonna die. Fact.

  • Comment removed

  • I thought i was alone..."and Can i keep it? "Zane Zane Zane

  • It's against the sickness of a society with too much conformity. This applies to capitalism, communism, fascism. Any system of thought and religion where the individual is to be used for a larger purpose with no room for the organic minds, humanity, love, creativity, peace and freedom, and freedom of association...

  • He did nuff acid wif Syd!

  • it's a stand for individuality over socialism.

  • Mix Van Gogh and Munch with Bowie it is absolutely divine!

    Zane...Zane...Zane....Ô....

  • That's what I thought ...lol

  • Beautiful song and really nice video !!

  • Thank you very much.

  • Great visuals for one of Bowie's best tracks

  • Thank you! ^_^

  • Ah I see I put 'that's right' in the wrong place. I was actually agreeing with miniorangepanther above! I think the songs of that era were undoubtedly influenced by his brother's illness as we are all influenced by what's going on in our lives. Having said that, I absolutely agree with your take on it.

  • Love this song very much. And the video you've made is a bit different and I like it :) I love Munch's Scream. Those plastic bags were funny :D

  • Thanks. I thought the bags were very clever. I think they were part of an advertising campaign.

  • Great song

    and

    Great video

    Thanks Thegasworks !!!!!

  • You're very welcome.

  • I love this song! :)

  • ahhh remember listening to this many years ago :p still a cool song

  • Yep! Timeless song.

  • this song is Glamour !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes. In some circles I've no doubt it's considered glamorous to be insane...or at least eccentric! :)

  • the first video i really did appreciate in YT,thanks !!

  • Ah the good old days!! lol Thank you.

  • 2:41

"He followed me home, mummy. Can I... keep him?

  • I looked for ways to incorporate something into the video that would reflect this sentiment. Strange one especially because 'ouvre le chien' (open the dog) is at the end....but then it is about madmen!

  • i love this song so much!♥

  • Yes me too!

  • a deep and chilling song, still

you've created a great interpretation here

    thanks for posting

particularly liked your use of Lowry

    what a strange ending

  • Thanks. You are only the second person to ask about the ending! I put the mad looking lady in and made sure that when she taps in time to the music, she's slightly out of sync, just like the madmen.

My friend told me that everything is slightly out of sync on youtube so I was wasting my time!! lol

  • ah yes, I see

now it all looks in synch!

    thanks

  • I would say something about your choice of art, and your kindness in giving your time to make this, but it's already been said. Thank you.

  • That's a very nice comment, thank you!!

  • Loved it when when he said "When the thin men stalk the streets" there was a Lowry painting. Genious! Absolutely perfect!

  • Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.

  • This song is a true masterpeice, as are most bowie songs from the early 70's

  • I agree!!!

  • this blew my mind when I was 13 and it still does.............37 years later, I love it, xx

  • Me too!!!

  • I love your video it goes very well with this song. Probably my fave Bowie song.

  • Thank you - so many to choose from but I love this one.

  • great, my compliments

  • Thank you. I accept your compliment and send you one back! lol

  • One of Bowies best, too bad it's now as popular as it should be.

  • I agree with you!!

  • Yeah man, .... n he later wandered to the railroad tracks,2 blocks away,n jumped in front of one em. Bewlay brothers is so sad n brilliant... because he actually becomes Terry at the end.Thats power .

  • Must have another listen to Bewlay Bros. - I didn't get that at the end.

  • this is some pretty heavy stuff.

  • Yes it is. I like Bowie's lyrics because they make me think.

  • 'In June 1982 Bowie's half-brother Terry Burns threw himself out of a window at Cane Hill Mental Hospial in an apparent suicide bid. He fractured his arm and leg and was taken to Mayday Hospital in Croydon.

(Christopher Sandford, Bowie: Loving The Alien)

  • He led a tragic life. Sad really.

  • awesome!

  • Thanks!

  • the girlfriend aint happy Thegasworks, while i spend my time enjoying your bowie posts, makes a change from syd barrett anyhow. keep em coming!

  • Why so? Can't a 75 year old woman with a hump and a limp have a little enjoyment! Hmmph - use your initiative kevfullo. lol.

Syd Barrett can never be ignored - oh no.

  • This is about David's dog, who was institutionalised in a kennel back in the

    16th century. Yes.

  • Yeah, I heard he was dog rough!!

  • great post , cheers!

  • You're very welcome!

  • should'nt that be E.C.T bOWIe old boy?!

  • Only heard this song the other day, had to hear it again, excellent, great Montage too!,

    Well done, thegasworks!

  • Thank you.

  • He's singing of his step/brother once again.

Commited to an insane asylum BewlayBrothers,Jump, and 'Man who sold the world' are all of him.

  • That's right.

  • Why do we think we can judge whats "sane" & what not...?

  • we have no right.

it help that "sanity" and "insanity" are concepts much like "normal" and they do not exist.

    great song.

  • Thanks gas works enjoyed that. Bowie had a brother in a mental hospital If I remember correctly .... a haunting song.

  • Obviously his brother's illness had a huge effect on him.

  • here i stand foot in hand talking to my wall

very simple but the point of it is very clear.

bowie is crazy here. not right at all.....

  • Jeez I don't think it's simple to stand with foot in hand talking to a wall...tried it...keep falling over lol!

  • zound-zound-zound / open the hound

  • Indeed!!!!!!

  • not to mention zog-zog-zog...

  • ssshhhh - we never mention zog!!!!!!!!!!

  • Skanderbeg?

  • Only if the Albanians agree....

  • here i is back agin (ye knows..., once inna wile) -- i sees dis ere page be quite blank -- folx grabs they foot, they talx to the wall..

  • Aye matey, dey do...

  • 'appy noo ear, gaz (cant make out wot dey's talking abouts, this be just a song)

  • let me add just one thing: the "zane-zane-zane": ingenious simplicity (can't get it off my mind).

  • beautiful song & video, I really love this one, lots of memories. thanks for posting!

  • You're very welcome.

  • hecka good song!

The thin men stalking the streets is a creepy conjured image!

  • It is indeed!!

  • Love this song Perfect lyrics, Ronno's guitar makes it twice as amazing, and mick woodmansey's drums make it three times as amazing, and ralh mace on his synthesizer makes it perfection

  • Thanks I'm glad you liked it!

  • Kris is right. Also Bewlay Brothers,Man who sold the world,They say Jump, somehow haunted by only visiting Terry only once, but promising to visit regularly.Very sad until Terry jumped in front of a Subway car to extinguish himself.Always thought that deep personal admittance, pure art.The true core of it...maybe not...?

  • It could very well be at the root of Man Who Sold the World album, whether consciously or unconsciously. For most of us in his position at the time, I think those circumstances would have an effect. Bowie says he has no idea what the Bewlay Brothers is about. He owned a Bewlay pipe at the time and that's why he chose the name.

  • Nice job! I have only just caught this and it's one of my favourite Bowie songs, You've done a really nice job here of matching everything up and i do KNOW a lot of effort goes into something like this. THanks for posting. LOVE IT!

    Ken

  • Thanks very much Ken, I'm glad you liked it. ~ Frances

  • Heh, didn't notice that. Thank's for pointing it all out :)

  • bellissima e toccante...

  • Thank you!!!

  • 2:13 Great image!! All great images. Nice work. Thank you for posting.

Cheers all. Carry with you music and humor, and you'll never fall!

  • You're welcome glyph68. Thanks for watching.

  • This song is definitely about the mental health system. This is one I would use to do a Mental Health Illness Playlist.

    blessings

  • How do you mean? Glad you liked the video.

  • You're right

Bowie wrote the song about his brother Terry who was a schizophrenic and spent time in asylums

    KK

  • Thank you - must have been sad.
