@1anthonybrowning Nearly all modern military jets have hooks for emergencies. Mostly they are only used for brake failures where the a/c will run out of runway before stopping.
@381Legoman I'll tell you what's awesome - landing that sucker without a single person even getting a scratch. Makes for a helluva lot fewer tax dollars blown. Also, crash landing that neat and clean? Plane might be totaled, but I betcha that mess was cleaned up in no time! Downtime like that on a military runway is expensive. Time = money in the US Armed Forces, too!
Yes. I watched one crash in the '80s in NM. The pod was in the museum in Addison TX last I looked. Better to belly her in, though. It leaves the plane in repairable condition. An ejection would have resulted in a complete loss of the aircraft.
@tolpacourt That was only during the early years during the development of the A models. The wing root problems were fixed, and that was never a problem again.
This was the F111 that had a gear jam in Queensland (Amberley AF base) back in 08 I think. As you can guess the pilot was later seen high tailing out the cockpit as the fire crews foamed the aircraft down.
@bommaz what are you on about? It was a real crash landing. The pilot did well. If they didn't make it they would have been forced to eject in the capsule over Morten Bay.
@351xb1973 See comment above, try and understand sarcasm...you know a joke, piss take etc, you tube is just full of people too quick to attack other comments without even trying to absorb the content first. this is why i made the comment and look it worked.
Correct - lots of nasty stuff in them, including asbestos. Its a hugely complicated exercise, to remove the systems that can control nukes, to keep the yanks happy, etc. Its millions per airframe to keep one as a display model.
So it all comes down to cost.
But yes, its such a terrible end for these dearly loved planes to meet. As a friend of mine said, a "dishonorable discharge".
@callmeshane303@callmeshane303 Yeah, most of them were buried outside of Ipswich at Swanbank. They'd had their wings taken off, engines and electronics removed. I'll try and put a link here though that doesn't always work. If no link shows up google " f111s buried". A few have gone to museums. I think around 4 or 5 but I'm sure there would have been enough demand with RSLs and museums to take the lot of them rather than doin what they did.
Fuck me - they could have donated them to TAFE's for sheet metal classes / universities aerospace courses / artists groups to cut up and make into other things....
actually no they couldn't really use anything from the aircraft as a lot of the materials used in the construction are considered hazardous. There's probably asbestos and other crap in the airframes. They could have left them intact and made static displays out of the old girls though.
The Tail Hook is there to make the landing short so it doesn't go off the end of the runway the F-16 has one incase of emergency even though its not a carrier aircraft if its an emergency they can use it. 5star Video btw :)
Was this crash landing done deliberately for practice or was the pilot unable to lower the landing gear for some reason? Interesting. It looked rather flawless other than that.
Bet he had thongs, stubbies and a blue singlet on and i swear i could see his arm perched up on the side window like Brocky at Bathurst, looks like Amberley?
Any sim pilots in here having done this maneuver a multitude of times after a pretty shoddy sortie? :D Always exciting. Can't imagine how the pilot kept his cool. Very impressive.
Awesome piloting. I especially like how he scrapes the ground with the arrestor hook (or at least what I'm assuming is an arrestor hook) before he gets to the runway.
@LordsOfLanding - No, it was considered that by the time repairs would be complete, it would be too close to the retirement day, so this aircraft wasn't repaired.
There was possibly a malfunction with the landing gear so he was told to come in and land on the belly of the plane, You can also see the emergency services there waiting for it to land, Good job pilot! Very well done!
@weefrasey1 from memory his front wheel fell off on take off, as you do. I believe this was the first ever belly landing of an F111 in the world. Historically they just ejected (hopefully) and crashed them.
F111's had a reputation in the 70's. Just like boomarangs, sometimes they returned, sometimes they didn't :\
@grl8862 No, His left main undercarriage wheel burst and fell of on take off and was only realized on landing, It took 4 hours for the Squadron CO (commanding officer) it make the decision of weather the pilots where to land on the belly or go for plan B, Plan B was simple , they would fly the F111 out to moreton Bay and Eject the pod and safely land in the sea to wait for execration. lucky they went with the belly landing meaning the F111 lives today happily in the BOEING building at Amberley.
the only reason in history that some F111 didn't return from flights is because of its first designs. when they first made the F111 A (Air Force Model) the Wing Pivot box was not made to the correct standard that was needed for the amount of vibrations that is caused in supersonic flight. because of the fault wing would simply fall off. so after the Americans loosing about 15 they decided to figure out what the problem was, and after finding it they fixed it and the problem never happened again.
FB-111 .......I believe. That suckers actually a stratigic bomber equiped with a Nuclear Bus. Very impressive aircraft with amazing performance but as this video in dicated the landing gear was extremely complicated and somewhat problematical.
Looks like an F-111. Interesting that they would use the tail hook to slow it down. Someone must have some inside information if they can (or think they can) state the amount for a repair....not too humble.
@vinorob Yes it is an Aussie F-111. This story made headlines within the local media - issues with F-111's getting old prompted the Australian government to replace them with the F/A-18E. Shame really... Nothing will be as spectacular as the dump and burn.
Going by memory, one of the main landing gear wheels fell off during take off. So they decided to land with no landing gear at all as it would be safer landing on the flat belly (using the emergency landing tail hook and cable on runway to slow down the aircraft very quickly) as you can see here.
You know the top brass was hoping to see the cockpit rocket away from the A/C. That's just a sight rarely seen, as the F-111's are just about the only aircraft, that I know of, that the entire crew compartment separates in an ejection, rather than individual seats. I saw it once in the U.S. in New Mexico in 1988. Ejection right after takeoff.
@TheSimonHarris That pilot had exceptional control. Although I suppose in such a life or death situation you'd have to! The adrenaline rush must of been epic!
@Snipe4261 If you notice, the plane sorta suddenly dives for the ground at the end. There was an arresting cable accross the runway and the hook caught it. You can just see it get caught @ 0:17 sec
@Justinh789 Okay, but all it did was rip the hook off and slam the airplane to the ground. The plane seemed to already be flying very slowly and the pilot didn't look like he was having any trouble controlling it, so the question is why didn't he just set it down on the belly?
@Snipe4261 If he didn't use the arresting cables the jet would have hit tail first. The arresting cables cause the jet to come down flat so the smack down force wasn't focused on the most explosive part of the aircraft (the back end).
Hi, im thinking he didn't put in down on the grass cause it would excellerate it being how slipperygrass can be, plus there could be pot holes which could possibly unsteady the the thing.
That did not look like a navy jet, so why did he have arresting tail hook on the plane?

Obviously an inoperative landing gear situation.
The pilot tries - and succeeds - in snagging an arrester cable.
At around 0:51sec into the video you can see a cable/ground spacer on the cable being dragging along.
This is why the aircraft stops so quickly....

Hi, im thinking he didn't put in down on the grass cause it would excellerate it being how slipperygrass can be, plus there could be pot holes which could possibly unsteady the the thing.
Not sure though, just a guess.

Geez some of you are stupid.
He saved a multi million dollar plane instead of bailing out & allowing it to crash.
His flying skills were exemplary.

Chopper Read? What have you been smoking & what's the connection with this career criminal?
Taxpayers would rejoice at this pilots skill & bravery.
