If one saw Overnight a bit, it seemed different. . .and a bit off. If one watched it regularly, then it made sense. it was like NPR in the early days, low budget, fly by night and cheeky. For those who were "regulars" cancellation was a great loss and nothing on FREE TV ever came close again. As Marie Curie said, "and so it glows."
I'm trying desperately hard to find a full episode of Overnight on the internet that had Lloyd Dobyns in it. He is my grandfather and I'd love to see his stuff.
Dick: Bill was confused. He didn't make the piece. If you click to read *all* the comments you will see a posting from the producer who did create it. That is the definitive word on the subject as far as I'm concerned.
Brings back memories.Great first of it's kind show.Ahead of it's time.According to Mike Harney who created the webpage tribute to Overnight,in 1998 Bill Schechner emailed him telling him that the singer of this video was Mike Nesmith of the Monkees, not Lou Christie.Thought I should state this for the record. And so it goes!

Positive Great song! Lou Christy-What a Voice! I miss the 80's and Mr Kearney- he loved this song and this video and was the Coolest Adopted Dad around. He played this footage for me in the Mid-80's.
such a great show. had this conspiratorial feel to it--like Linda and Lloyd were letting 600,000 of their closest friends in on "the secrets of the universe" now that the world had gone to bed. And, yes... I still remember this great clip.
Setting the record straight:I'm the producer who created the video. We used Lou Christie's version of the song. We looped a verse to play twice so as to have more time for video. Every frame of the piece came from spots that had aired on NBC News Overnight--network pieces or pieces sent in by affiliates. This video aired twice. The 1st time was for the 1year anniversary. We all liked it so much that when Overnight was cancelled, we decided to air this again on our last show.
I've been looking for footage of News Overnight FOREVER - I can't believe the best tv news show in history - no contest - is entirely unavailable today. Thank you SO SO SO much for this clip - wasn't it from the final (or maybe penultimate?) broadcast?? I still remember how gutted I was when NBC pulled News Overnight - I don't think I'd have made it through college without Ellerbee/Dobyns/Schechner to look forward to each night.
Please post more clips if you have them? Please????

NBC News Overnight was ahead of its time, and Linda Ellerbee was definitely easy on the eyes. This video is one of my favorite memories of the 1980s.

I haven't seen this video since it was originally shown on NBC. What a beautiful song to go with the beautiful scenes. Thanks for posting it.

I love this song-used to watch that show all the time!!!! Did Linda Elerbee used to say "and so it goes" at the end?

I think Linda, Lloyd, and Bill all used it. But did it originate on Overnight or on Weekend?

Definitely not Nesmith's version. However, it's the same arrangement that Nez used. Cool version.

This is actually the Lou Christie version from the Rain Man soundtrack. But Nesmith's version is also amazing.
