  • The Gear start had a sequence of "PN-DLR". The "-" was the position for use of only direct drive (second gear), whereas the "D" was for starting in Low with and automatic up-shift to direct drive.

If you look closely, you'll see that the shift sequence is "PNHLR", which is the order for the original Ultramatic. Note there is no D, "H" is the normal driving position. The original Ultramatic was not capable of an automatic upshift, it relied on the torque converter for gear reduction.

  • The Gear-Start Ultramatic is a vary rare and hard to find as it was only offered the last couple of years of '54, and '55 saw the introduction of the Twin-Ultramatic.

  • Does that gear start Ultramatic still work? I know the earlier ones had some problems with the fluids. I believe that type FA ATF is a good substitute, as is non synthetic B&M trickshift. Has your friend tried these? I have yet to do a fluid change in my '56 Patricians twin ultra, so I couldnt say for sure.

My friend is restoring a 54 Packard Henny junior ambulance. we trade off weekends working on each others cars together.

    Packards are a great car!

  • It's not a Gear-Start.

  • The body doesn't appear to have any major dents. A good paint job will make that look sharp. The interior looks like it needs major work on the upholstery and carpeting. Good luck and I think you make this car look good.

  • thanks for the response, we are really proud of it. it is my friend's first restoration project.
