@retornaz Doesn't matter all CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) machines work in the same way. However, some require training, example - Komatsu machines, they have multi tool machines that use both lathe and milling machines in one "box". Thus having a 3D layout after the input of all the numbers etc.
Why a CNC? Higher precision than by hand (meaning a non CNC milling machine).
I would like to learn how to make fingerboards and guitar necks; I just learnt how to cut and carve guitar bodies from Mahogany, Maple or Alder. I am new at this but would love to learn. I will be living in California as of April 2011. Now I am in Finland. Can anyone help me?
@bernsbandana you can search the internet for work shops around your location...i live in brazil yeah....but even here we have LOTS of good workers and classes (dont know if its correct)... you can try to find a luthier or a music store im sure they can help you...
Doing this by hand is not something that would make the guitar play better etc, but I have handmade guitars where all the MOP inlays are cut by hand, drawn by hand, routed bu hand and finished by hand. For me, I like the feeling that I have something that no one else on the planet has.. But, that said, this guys work looks nice... :-)
Doing an inlay by hand doesn't improve tone, feel, weight, balance, of your chops. Who cares? It's not a part of the instrument that needs to be done by hand to get the right feel to it.
@greatest69ever Are you high or just stupid? There is NO reason to cut inlays by hand if you don't have to. If you don't have/can't afford the machines necessary to do it by machine, then yea, do em by hand. But if you have the equipment, use it!
being on both sides of the coin i can understand the arguements of both ends. I'm a CNC manufacturing engineer by day, luthier by night. I started by making my guitars and pickups by hand but, honestly, in order to establish a good business model, it's imposible to sell 100% hand made guitars because nobody wants to spend the money to justify the cost while the luthier eats ramen noodles putting hundreds of hours into a single instrument. I just bought a CNC to help with the monotonous stuff
some may argue cutting out with a machine is bullshit. some might say imagine the satisfaction of creating that with handtools. i.e. hand made... what should that phrase stand for? peace n love etc.
i inlay for a living. obviously it's a cut above this, but having to use a cnc machine to do such a simple peice of work is baffling. i know about mass production, so please don't come down on me. i'm mega impressed with the human ingenuity behind the actual machine, but to me it all seems a bit soulless. but whatever, good times
@paloriggs I feel your pain. I guess some people may be extremely talented instrument builders but just may not be very good at cutting inlays. Or, as some guitar makers may tell you there is a lot of pressure now to be "perfect" and the use of CNC may outweigh the risk of doing it by hand.
how much does it cost to get you to inlay a fingerboard i'd totally do it cause you have the machinery and everything i'd send a fingerboard and everything for ya
Hi, im wondering if i send you a neck and inlays could you install or cut the holes for me??

The fingerboard looked bad after sanding. Is there any way to fix this?

CNC Pride!! Work that machine I say! Job will be done "picture perfect" every time, and goes alot faster, which means "moar moniez".
That being said, I'm not trying to "put down" anyone doing it by hand. Must take tremendous skill!
Cool inlays though! Would love to have something custom for my guitars some day! =)

cutting inlays by hand takes more time and extreme care !! I prefer the CNC way. Cut in a jiffy.
