I just wonder how the fuck anyone can play when left mouse button is responsible for selecting units AND issuing orders to them. IMO biggest downside of this game. I prefer SupCom that except obvious improvements like better graphics in 3D and has also strategic zoom, better story, experimentals and normal controls. Just sayan
@ClTIZEN now seriously: I did not say that graphics are everything. I should just say "TA graphics are not intuitive for me and the controls SUCK". Did you read my whole post before answering?
@Thremle A bit late to reply, but I'm pretty sure TA had a setting in the Options to switch between left-click ordering (default, C&C style) and right-click ordering (Starcraft-style).
@Thremle actually you had short cuts in the game. Where you can select all aircraft, ships, etc, assign them to groups, and you can use the map to move units around. Total Annihilation was released in 1997 you crackhead, no RTS has much better graphics.
@SamuelMoralesJr There are shortcuts for selecting types of units in SupCom too, you can assign units to groups and use minimap for orders probably in every RTS since StarCraft, are you that delusional that you are telling me that no game has topped TA for 14 years in graphics?
@Thremle damn you moron Total Annihilation is a old game that played in Windows 95 in 1997. SupCom came out 10 years later. It's made by the same guy you doofus.
I believe firmly that this and Grim Fandango both had the BEST music ever seen in a game. Things are too big, flashy and hollywood now. The productions are SO big now that its prone to cheese.
Late 90s man, that was the golden age of gaming. Basically ran up til about when KOTOR was released. Those were great, heady days. God I feel old and I'm only 23.
just gives me the creeps, as I remember the end videos just before the credits.
Btw, Chris Taylor isn't just about RTS, if you look hard enough, you'll see his name in a lot of credit lists from old games (fallout among them, along with many other I don't remember). He's just some computer entertainment genius, as almost every game he works on is critically acclaimed, even if advertisement didn't follow (I hate starcraft just for that).
Jeremy Soule is a genius when he did this music back in the day, its a shame he was not given enough credit for it! God I love the music to this game, especially track 2 when the low brass just hammers that intro!
Simply the best! you beat the game and wonder whats next. Then you go to tauniverse. com and find the millions strong Player based TA network full of hundreds of mods and millions of units and maps. Also there is TA spring by the swedish yankspankers and all its mods.
after playing computergames regularly almost everyday since i got my first computer in cristmas 1992, i can guarantee you that Total Annihilation is the game with the most astonishing and breathtaking music EVER! <3
....HOW...THE...HELL...DID YOU GET THIS SONG?! I have been searching for the theme of TA for so bloody long! Sure, I got the other songs from the CD easily, but the theme?!
Ur barking up the wrong tree. SC was produced by the same guy that made TA (Chris Taylor) and is essentially a sequel/reimagination to TA that finally got the credit it deserves. Some parts of TA just cant be beat, especially the music. The game was lightyears ahead of it's time. But we should be thankfull its still going on. And now they're making SC2 with square...
Omg... so many memories.... The ancestor of Sup. Comm. ..... WAY more fun to play!! And the music!! It made 50% of the game... a shame that it doesn't play anymore for some reason... although I have them in the folder...
The game reads the music from the CD. The first track is empty(the gamefiles), and the rest of the tracks are the music, so you can make a music-CD image with nero or any other CD-software and mount it in a virtual drive(prefferably D:) and the game will read it. You can burn it and put it in a real drive optionally and the same works for any CD (music-CD, not mp3-CD) The game will play them ingame according to your settings in music options.
yes, epic music ... i dont think the original opening track was as good as this one though, i agree that this surpasses supcom in gameplay and music too, for me, supcom was full of fail, sim latency and various other problems were just too much to bear, so as much as i like it, i hung up my uef flag and stopped playing.
especially with Square Enix's Abomination that they dared call Supreme Commander 2 ... everything looks like lego, and its rts for idiots.
@Nicko93 Total Annhilation uses CDDA, which is to say the entire game is installed to the PC's hard disk, and then the game just plays CD audio tracks. You can actually use any audio CD while the game is running, it doesn't have to be the TA cd. The thing is, CDDA isn't used much these days. It uses more space than mp3's and doesnt offer the same flexibility for mixing.
The Spring engine may support the use of MP3s in place of the original cd audio tracks, not sure.
I agree, that one and the last track are the ones I play the most when I play this game. I think those are number 7 and number 16 on the CD. Number 7 is the first of the slower songs, I ususally play number 7 to 16 the most. But the first ones with a faster pace are good to.
When I heard the first track I honestly thought this was done by Richard Jacques. No insult to Soule's mastery, that particular track just sounded strongly like Jacques' style.
AWESOME game! I got it from one of those PC Expert editions, absolutely amazing! I thought this game was abandoned, but it seems I was wrong and there are loads of people that still play! Very good choice indeed, keep it up!
I loved this game. Nothing quite compares to it... Supreme Commander doesn't even reach as high as this game did, taking the technology of the time into account. I think I will have this theme music burnt into my brain until the day I die.
@bcgabriot over looked after one month? how young are you? lol This game was popular at least for a few years. This and starcraft were one of the top strategy games of those days.
OMFG! Nice choice! This game was pretty incredible. I remember getting the demo from PC Gamer and playing it until the game came out. Still play it every now and then. This spring I loaded it onto my new Windows machine. Load time were non-existent. But this is really all about the soundtrack - which was incredibly fitting.
Ooooh, dunno about that. It did take about 7 billion hours on some maps but that's what made it that bit more satisfying than some of the other RTS's around at the time.
Brilliant game. Epic, and brilliant.
