  • I too use the Paiste 2002 series and I must say that I would never dare use any other cymbals than Paiste. My theory is once you go Paiste you never go back.

  • Excellent dude!

  • And your tone is spot on!

  • Nailing every beat dude. Sounds like Bonham playing BeBop for a little bit there, fantastic.

  • Great playing and quality sounding cymbals!!!

  • with the snare fills are you just playing singles? thanks (: love your vids

  • awesome playing man. but Bonham didn't use a 20", stuck with 18"s usually.

  • @Limedrum

Even if he didn't, I love it!! Thank you!

  • @Limedrum actually there is a clip where bonhams drum tech is telling about his drum&cymbals set-up and there is a 20" crash on the right

  • @TheNevermind1313 You're right! My bad.

  • @Limedrum Actually, he did use the 20. He changed it out for the 18 about half the time. Also, he did more than just the two crash cymbals. He put up the 20 with the 18 as well. It just depended on the venue or recording textures.

  • @Limedrum that's where you're incorrect. my friend..i have the book,"A Thunder of Drums" which is all about Bonham, the drummer, the musician, the man..everything there is to know about him is in that book..what gear he used with Zep, what he used before Zep,what mics were used in studio, what kits he used on tour or recording sessions, etc..in the section of cymbals and gongs, this is a quote from the author of the book.. cont..

  • send this guy some trumpets and a crazy jazz lead.

    :)

  • Hi dan ,

was John Bonham his green sparkle a classic maple kit ?

  • @ruben79670

Yes, but back then the shells were 3-ply maple.

  • @GrooveDrummin and now ? 2 ply or 4 ply ?

  • @ruben79670

when i bought my classic maples in 2001 they were 9-ply. I bought two rack toms around 2008 and they were 6-ply. Thing is they seem to be the same thickness. I have seen the older 3-ply shells and they also seem to be the same thickness. Here's how it goes...The thicker the shell the higher the natural pitch and the thinner shells produce a lower fundamental pitch.

  • @GrooveDrummin hah didn't know that

    thankyou very much :)

  • Another awesome demonstration on great drumming.Love your videos and sound.

  • it perfectly fits my 2002 medium 20 :). Hail Paistes!

  • Great playing Man!...Awesome sounding kit and cymbals!......I'm slowly making the switch to Paiste after using Sabians for so many years and couldn't be happier with my new sound...I bought the 16 inch 2002 crash and just ordered the 18 Giant Beat,...was going to get the 18 2002 but I love the vintage sound and took the chance on the GB.....I'm told by many in the drum forums I won't be disappointed. I heard Bonham used Giant Beats before making the switch to the 2002's.

  • Groove, you must check out the 2002 19" crash, its perfrction! i have 19,20,22, 24 2002 crashes and 18 and 20 2002 medium, i agree with you on hte 18 medium, i should have kept the 18 crash, but the 2002 20 medium is one of my favorites, much better then the 18.

  • @493john

sounds cool...i'd love to try a 19" crash

  • @493john Don't know what GrooveDrummin said re the 2002 18" Medium, but... I've got a black label one, and I absolutely LOVE it!

  • @patricedrums

that the medium is higher in pitch than the crash

  • @GrooveDrummin I see. Thanks for clearing that up. :-) Would love to compare with the one that I've got. Will post a clip some time. (On the one I've got up, I'm not sure the sound comes through enough...)

  • whether the 70s he played Ian Paice paiste 2002 crash 20'',22''or 24''?

  • @gaga1985dw

Ian likes to use very large cymbals...i would say he has all three of those sizes you mention

  • @GrooveDrummin ok thank you!

  • nice!.I have paiste 2002 black label crash 22'' 1971 years :)

  • @gaga1985dw

    very cool

  • paiste crash 20-thin or mediam?????????

  • @gaga1985dw

just crash...not thin or med or anything

  • I have so much respect for this guy :)

  • Impressive as usual

  • Perfect cymbal set up there , sounds great.

  • What kind of cymbal is that next to the far floor tom? a CHina?

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe

    correct...Paiste 2002 18" china

  • @GrooveDrummin Your drumming is out of this world fab fab fab !!!

  • I always enjoy thoroughly your playing style. A mix of Bonham, Rich, and most importantly Zalac !

  • @AlainHubert

    Thanks :)

  • I wish I had enough money to get a full 2002 setup!

Amazing video, cymbal and of course amazing drummer!

  • I just got my 2002 Med a month ago and it's very similar to the regular crash. Doesn't overpower my 2002 18" crash and rides decently as well. These are my favorite Paiste cymbals!

  • watching your videos is so much fun. you have beautiful equipment and great skills and groove, and you look like you're having fun too. i now have the 15'' sound edge hi hats, the 20'' medium crash and the 24'' crash, can't wait till i can buy the 24'' ride.

i want a 26'' kick so bad haha. i'm so obsessed with drum equipment it's ridiculous. anyways keep making videos, for me they're very useful and interesting

  • @basje224

Really awesome to hear these kind words! You're gonna love the ride!!

  • How much is it for the 42 strand of snares?

  • @WelcomeWakinyan

i think it was around $18.

  • @GrooveDrummin

    Great sounding cymbals dude!

  • @GrooveDrummin

awesome drumming and rolls! So how are the 2002s holding up durability wise?

  • Just subed your channel...awesome skill, man!

  • That is one fine sound!!! And the drummings not to shabby either, very nice vid man!!!

  • Hey, I just took a look at your profile to check out if you use the Ambassador or the Emperor for your bass drum. So I found this video.

The Paiste 2002 Crash 20" really is a great cymbal - I also bought it two months ago. It's my favourite cymbal! And now the 18" Crash is the small one, hehehe...

  • @tomtomtrommeltom

    yeah, what a sound...congrats!

  • My top 3 :)

    1) John Bonham

    2) Ian Paice

    3) Dan Zalac

  • @RubenVW95

you're too kind, thanks brother !!

  • @GrooveDrummin no i'm not

    it's just the truth

i'm 15 years old i have my favorites and i have john bonham and ian paice i didn't have a 3th drummer to love . Now i've found you :p

I would love to have drum lessons of you every week an hour or something like that but you live in canada i live in belgium so ... :p

  • owasome....

  • INFINITE TIMES LIKE THIS VIDEO...IN OTHER WORDS, YOUR DRUMMING!

  • I love the sound. It captures the set as a whole, and gives it so much presence. You can hear the room with everything you hit.

  • You're quite a fella, I dig it! Great playing too!

  • Near the end, the funk reached an amazing level! Lovin' it!

  • Hi dan

    as always great video ;)

i have a question i was in a shop recently and the guy told me that bonham used

a 18 " and 20 " MEDIUM crash and I said i have a 18 " crash and he said ooh the same as john bonham . Are medium crashes and just crashes the same ?

  • @RubenVW95

    Hi Ruben

    Thanks bro!

If you go to the Paiste web site you can hear all of their cymbals they have in the sound room setup there, very cool. I didn't like the medium as much as just the crash because the pitch was too high for me. But check out their site and hear for yourself.

  • @GrooveDrummin your right the pitch is to high by the medium crash

so this 20" crash is the one bonham used ? :)

  • @RubenVW95

I think so, I know Bonzo traded off between the medium and crash on the 18" but I'm not sure about the 20". Even if not, I love the sound of the standard crash better anyways.

  • @GrooveDrummin yes it is better

now you see i have a very hard dissicion to make i was already sure i was gonna buy this one

but i can't choose between ian paice his ride or john bonham the 22" ride or the 24 " ride i can't choose :p

  • @RubenVW95

yeah, i know all the cymbals sound good but use the Paiste sound room so you don't regret your decision.

  • @GrooveDrummin i already did

and i'm stuck with the dissicion for already 2 months haha

  • @RubenVW95

i see you did get just the crash...well that's the one i would have got also. I think you made the right decision.

  • @GrooveDrummin can you help me a little bit what's your opinion

i think the 22" is a great crash a better one then the 24" but when your hit the body i think the 24" is better

    what do you think

  • @RubenVW95

i'm assuming you mean ride used as a crash. All I can say is I have a 20" power ride that I like a lot too but this 24" is tuned perfect. It makes a great crash also. The 22" is nice too and it's a matter of what your ears like better.

  • @GrooveDrummin

hmmm i think i will follow bonzo ;)

i just want to know the 24" if you hit it really hard is it really like a big crash ? :)

  • @RubenVW95

watching this video will answer that question

  • I love the 20in 2002 Crash!!! I also have the 18in & together with the 20in they sound & complement each other. If you want to hear the 20in's in full flight have a listen to the mighty Alex Van Halen!!! He is the best known for that big cymbal sound, he along with John Bonham is why I'm a Paiste fan!! No other cymbal can match them IMO!!

  • And great playing as usual Dan!

  • I've literally just swapped out a 2002 20" Medium for a 20" Giant Beat haha...

I couldn't stand it to be honest, too 'cold' sounding next to the 18 and 24 Giant Beats!

Not sure I'd swap out my 15" 2002 Sound Edges as easily though :)

  • so... whats the final setup?

  • @secorta

that should do it.....my wife will kill me if i spend any more money!

  • your an experienced and well established drummer so this is why i ask you this..... how do you become more creative and think differently when you play the drums? do you take a new approach or count differently???? i want to expand my abilities and style as a drummer, but i feel in a rut with grooves, beats, and the fills i play. just lookin for some help

  • @rollforever911

think of grooves and fills you've heard from your fav tunes and try to replicate them in the beginning and then "color" them with your personality. You can also try to set a type of mood or story line when you play. Hendrix used to play and feel it through "colors". Even though he was a guitarist I like to try to incorporate this philosophy when I play also. You can really go to different places....let me know what happens :)

  • Nice man...love the cymbal setup

  • Nice man...love the cymbal setup

  • Wow... Awesome bro...

  • Lovely cymbal! My setup is also all 2002, 14" SE hats, 16" and 18" crashes and 20" ride, perfect blend!

  • @Sava1980

    cool

  • Excelente! muy bueno.

  • Keep rockin' man!

  • Right on! I love my "2002"s

The signatures are cool...the RUDE's are nice... The Demension's are cool too but I favor the "2002"s!!

  • Groov-a-licious! And that last double stroke to single stroke was perfect! I'm waiting to get some (a lot) money so I can buy other 2002 cymbals to go with my 20" 2002 medium ride from the 70's. That ride is awesome, although I like your 24" better :)

    Peace brother!

  • wow dan u r still one of my top three drummers.ive really been jealous of you these past few months since you've got the 24" ride that ive been wanting for forever and now u get the 20" crash i want too!?! haha i am truly jealous now!

  • @1511zack

    coolness and thanks for watching!

i waited and saved a long time for these beauties too....look on ebay for the deals, that's where i bought mine

  • always awesome!

  • my subwoofer likes u :) hahaha

  • 5:30 till the end is my favorite.... AMAZING VIDEO

    GOD BLESS

  • Great videos, love your playing!

  • you just know how to groove and it is awesome my friend

  • Nice! Enjoyed this, thanks:-)

  • Have you thought about submitting a video to "drummer of tomorrow contest"?

  • @sethmccarty1976

interesting idea... I never heard of this contest.

  • @GrooveDrummin It's going on until the 31st of this month. You could win it!!

  • @sethmccarty1976

I'd enter but i was reading something about you have to live in the USA to be eligible. Maybe there's a different contest for Canadians?

  • @GrooveDrummin Aww....BOOOOOOOO...lol..Sorry,I didn't know that part..My fault bro..You got plenty of fans keeping up with you..Love the drumming!!

  • NICE!

  • Nice. The whole kit sounds rad.

  • It really works well, you have the definitive cymbal set up...The Awesome PAISTE'S..

    very nice, quite jealous really.:>.

  • What is your mic set up? Is all your kit mic'd or are you just using the Rode? The sound is incredible! By chance is the room sound treated? Great playing also as always!

    ~Trevor

  • @CrawfordDrummer

Exactly what I want to know, if all your using is the Rode than that's a crazy good sound your getting from it.

  • @CrawfordDrummer

My profile here lists all the gear but in a nutshell I use 8 mics, one being the Rode. The room is not sound treated...concrete walls and 3 foot knee walls creating 10 foot ceilings. But it is a large room: 50x30 ft. Thanks for watching!

  • @GrooveDrummin Well the drums sound more alive than most other I've heard trying to go for the Bonham tone, you've nailed it!

  • @CrawfordDrummer

the big room, proper mic placement and lack of heavy processing maybe...not even eq. Also the sound is in HOW the drum is hit. May not look like it but every time I hit the snare, when grooving, i'm doing a rimshot and hitting the drums with a fair amount of force. I think all of that contributes to the sound.

  • @CrawfordDrummer

    thanks!

  • Do you have anything in your bass drum? LIke a pillow or something?

  • @WelcomeWakinyan

no, just 2 felt strips on either side

  • @WelcomeWakinyan

He has a felt strip on both sides of his kick.

  • Wicked man. Just wicked. As always.

  • Now THAT'S how you play drums

  • awesome!

  • Wow, we have the same crashes, and ride. I got my 20" crash before you and we got the 24 ride at the same time, i got the 18 not too long ago. Snare sounds fantastic dude! AAAAA+++++++

  • @scott111193

    thanks!

  • What a great sound, man

  • What head on the snare? Emperor?

  • @drumsanddrumming

    vintage emperor

  • @GrooveDrummin sounds good, I`ve love when Bonham and others use them. But when I play them it sounds like cotton in my ears. I use Aquarian on most of my snares but just recently got an Ambassador x that I put on my COB,

  • I have 18, 20, 22, 24" crashes (2002). and a 22 ride and the 24 Rev Al`s big ride ;)

  • @drumsanddrumming

    nice!!

  • @GrooveDrummin yes, friend, Paiste make great cymbals, I`d buy some Sound Formula crashes if I could my hands of some.

  • they souund great dude :D

  • So Bohnam. Very nice.

  • Sounds awesome, man. Also, nice playing.

  • Oh yea Bonham knew a lot about cymbals and drums. I've had my 2002's since the 80's. I absolutely love them. I like them even more that the Giant Beats. I think Bonham did too. Congrats Man. Keep Rockin' JOEDRUMS2112

  • @JOEDRUMS2112

    Thanks brother :)

  • sounds great bro!

  • @michaelsykes75

    thanks!

  • i hope i get this groovin feel inside my soul someday.
