They aren't endangered but these fish have to be carefully managed, that fish in this vid is probably 100 yrs. old... Very few people can say that they caught a sturgeon.

It is a White Sturgeon. They are legal to catch in California, not endangered. This fish was caught before the 66 inch maximum size limit went into effect. He was going to get his knife to kill it during the time this video was taken. The fish was eaten.

This is a preastoric fish it can live without air in its lungs for a long time If they started abusing it I can see a reason to be mad but you guys are just spazzing for no reason. Its not harming the sturgeon.
@youtwo56 although i'm pretty sure sturgeon are laurasian decedents, they still don't have lungs. no fish have lungs, a few have labyrinth organs that allow them to "respire" they still require water to breath. The issue is also not the lack of oxygen but the build up of carbon dioxide. Overall the fish was probably fine, but it's still best to get it back as quickly as possible.
I hope they put it back. Sturgeon can live to be many hundreds of years old. That fish could have been 200 hundred years old. There was a lake sturgeon caught in Lake Michigan that was estimated at 300 years old.

White Sturgeon are legal to keep in California. You have to fill out a report card, and a tag, and attach the tag to the fish. Also, there is an open and closed season. The man who caught this is skilled, knowledgable, law abiding, and cares about conserving our resources. If it bothers you that this live animal is going to die, I have news for you - that's where meat comes from.

@jhigh13legit I agree. I hate people that do that. Either release it or kill it quickly. I also believe that a fish should only be killed if intended for food use and not just mounting. I believe record fish should be kept alive, recorded by the proper authorities and then released back into the wild.

@youtwo56 although i'm pretty sure sturgeon are laurasian decedents, they still don't have lungs. no fish have lungs, a few have labyrinth organs that allow them to "respire" they still require water to breath. The issue is also not the lack of oxygen but the build up of carbon dioxide. Overall the fish was probably fine, but it's still best to get it back as quickly as possible.

I hope they put it back. Sturgeon can live to be many hundreds of years old. That fish could have been 200 hundred years old. There was a lake sturgeon caught in Lake Michigan that was estimated at 300 years old.

White Sturgeon are legal to keep in California. You have to fill out a report card, and a tag, and attach the tag to the fish. Also, there is an open and closed season. The man who caught this is skilled, knowledgable, law abiding, and cares about conserving our resources. If it bothers you that this live animal is going to die, I have news for you - that's where meat comes from.

They do not like fast movements and would be especially stressed out if they are subjected to bullshit like what is portrayed in this video. @jhigh13legit I agree. I hate people that do that. Either release it or kill it quickly. I also believe that a fish should only be killed if intended for food use and not just mounting. I believe record fish should be kept alive, recorded by the proper authorities and then released back into the wild.

I'm not much of a fisher so I could be wrong, but when ever I have gone fishing I've always been told the bigger fish should be thrown back but you can keep the smaller younger fish. I'm not going to try and explain the reasoning but something to do with the ecosystem...
