I actually like the grove that Weckl laid down starting at 2:13 on. At that point, he should have been syncopated as he played. But when he did that earlier, her overshadowed the superlative solo of Stern and that wasn't artistically helpful. But later on in the tune, he implemented the appropriate groove. No disrespect to Weckl, who is an outstanding drummer, but sometimes less is better.
@Samolamo No. I"ve actually been looking for the version with Chambers playing too, but they only made it on VHS and it's rare to find. But I agree with you. Weckl is a good solo drummer and he's real good at fusion but Chambers had a much better feel in this song when he played with Stern and the Breckers. Weckl is so choppy and syncopated in his drumming that he just didn't carry the smoothe rhythmic feeling that Chambers communicated when he played.
I very much enjoy Weckl's playing, but here, as with other Brecker Brothers tracks from the '92 tour, he is, in my opinion, FAR too busy; especially in the early part of Stern's solo. Chambers, for me nails it and gives it acres of space to breath. Weckl is a far more musical drummer now, I think. I am a drummer, with 30+ years of playing experience, by the way, not some arm-chair numpty.
Agreed. I saw this concert with Weckl and Chambers. Both amazing obviously but I liked Chambersa little better in this situation. Again Weckl is a monster and I don't mean any dissrespect at all to an amazing musician like him.
I saw this line up in '92 at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis. I was 12, and it was, and still is, the most amazing show I've ever seen. I'm so glad this was filmed.
Wow! Extraordinary stuff from Mike S.
James G ain't bad either. ;=)
Thank you for this!

Weckl needed to lay off the fills and just lay down a nice rhythm track while he let Stern shine. Weckl's way too busy!!!!!!

I KNOW! At first I thought this solo was amazing. Then I watched his other stuff, found Jean Pierre, and I can't listen to this song the same way.

Brecker is like DAMN! Everywhere, in every song, but here Stern... Can't explain, just feel it.
Clearly superior; his tone is his masterpiece, his playing, just beautiful.

Very good from Dave. Allthough I am great of fan of Dave ... Dennis Chambers nailed it better on the original CD.

Dave Weckl at his best. I love most his play around 94. Very rocky
