Work on technique first. Comfort will come with ability.
Get your sliding, swivel, heel-toe and constant release down and then you will get comfortable in your playing. Its like practicing with a pillow for your chops. When your body knows it can play a five stroke it will no longer matter what surface you play on!!
jrm2, you got any other tips to work on the kick. i got the same issues as jorge. trying to stop playing flat-footed...it's still a struggle sometimes to do a double
