@KhanShaukat1 Oh, Chinese wives had a lot of suffering- even if wealthy and pampered. This was a true singing bird in a cage- she longed for freedom. No wonder she rebelled and had an affair.

The movie shows how women are viewed as objects not people. They live in a patriarchal society. The man in this movie decides which women he will lay with thus they have no sexuality unless he wishes. The women must then compete for his attention because they have nothing of their own to posses other than him. Only death is there escape.

@SV438384 Exactly- survival within the confines of any society is always interesting, but when it's women who are glorified prisoners, all sorts of psychological stuff comes into play- a brilliant, touching story.

@Beeshitten glad that someone took it for what it really is....survival within 4 different ,very complex female psyche and without taking sides and discussing unhappy end (happy end is possible only in shallow american movies were bad guys smoke and get shot at the end) ,life is full of unexpected turns and twists that we are creating and in the proces we don't look back to check is it wright or not, yeah we are self righteous and hippocritical (but I'm not loving us less for that)

@Beeshitten Yes,some 20 years ago, the story that stayed carved in my mind and that remind me somewhat at Theodore Dreiser's "Titan" and "Stoic" even so cruel yet fantastic discription of a man's psyche and addresses roots of all dis communications between two sexes that are not per se limited only to a chinese female but more like all of us ,but yes I agree that I'm too glad I'm not chinese woman...I still do admire them though...

@SV438384 We had to do The Good Earth in high school for English Literature and I used to howl my eyes out. Poor O-Lan, a devoted wife and good mother, and treated so shabbily by her husband!! Even though his taking a second wife was legal and an accepted custom, it still broke her heart. Evedry book I've ver read about Chinese life has been terribly sad.

I saw this movie a few years ago on Channel 4 in the UK and fell in love with the story!

HMV were stocking the DVD for a short time a while back at £30 but they no longer have it :(
