As a muslim i must pray 5 times a day,as a women when i am menstruating n i am in pain, cramps, headaches and physical weakness due to the blood i am losing my Lord has excused me from getting up before the sun rise to pray or any other time of the day due to my health concerns as long as the bleeding and phyicall pain lasts.

I watched the video in its entirety. The sheikh responds in a traditional way - e.g. as one would have before we had the technology to discern what is normal and what is a gynaecological problem. Nowadays if your period goes on longer than it should or in any other way seems abnormal (chronically) go to the doctor to determine whether you are ill not to the sheikh. Once you know, THEN ask for the fiqh. I tire of this thread.
The doctor won't know be able to determine when it is time to pray again but he can inform the decision of the person the woman asks. If the doctor says her bleeding is due to an illness separate from her regular period that makes a difference to the fiqh. To guess at it in 2011 seems ludicrous. There is nothing that special about period bleeding - it's blood, mucus and tissue. Not inherently filthy or smelly as the Sheikh seems to think. But as you pointed out he is no doctor.
This is so bizarre. He is obviously completely unfamiliar with women's periods. Most women's periods start with brownish or pinkish spotting. He answered as if period bleeding is always dark red - he also assumes that there is an offensive smell. The reality is that it smells like blood - there is only a bad smell if it has been sitting around putrefying. The same would be true of any other kind of ongoing bleeding. The sister needs to ask her doctor what the blood is about./if she is ill.

It has nothing to do with the regular smell of blood. Second, the sheikh is not answering medical issues but Fiqh issues. The doctor won't know when it is required to pray and when one shouldn't. @dhaddox guys the thing here isnt the period itself its the timimg of it and whether its the wright time for a women to pray as a muslim women stays aaway from prayer during her period . he issnt giving any medical advice, i would seek such advice from a proffesional but here ismore to do with a womens religious duties.

I respect his opinion on this matter, however having been to a college he is wrong on this matter. If (woman) have bleeding that is unusually long.you should seek medical advice or attention. One you could be suffering from a number of issues endometriosis/ imbalance hormones. Women who suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can have a monthly period that last for weeks...cause her uterus is in the constant state of sloughing. In addition, menses or menstrual discharge is not and always red!

@Raiya30 his not wrong on this matter because his not talking about the period itself or the medical problems behind why it ununsual for some people, the question is about when a woman can continue her religious duties,whether or not her cycle is unsual for medical reasons in not in question as he clearly mentions it @ 2:15.so of course she should see a doctor.his answer is solely based on the religious duties that a woman can or cannot engage due to her unusual cycles

I watched the video in its entirety. The sheikh responds in a traditional way - e.g. as one would have before we had the technology to discern what is normal and what is a gynaecological problem. Nowadays if your period goes on longer than it should or in any other way seems abnormal (chronically) go to the doctor to determine whether you are ill not to the sheikh. Once you know, THEN ask for the fiqh. I tire of this thread.

The doctor won't know be able to determine when it is time to pray again but he can inform the decision of the person the woman asks. If the doctor says her bleeding is due to an illness separate from her regular period that makes a difference to the fiqh. To guess at it in 2011 seems ludicrous. There is nothing that special about period bleeding - it's blood, mucus and tissue. Not inherently filthy or smelly as the Sheikh seems to think. But as you pointed out he is no doctor.

This is so bizarre. He is obviously completely unfamiliar with women's periods. Most women's periods start with brownish or pinkish spotting. He answered as if period bleeding is always dark red - he also assumes that there is an offensive smell. The reality is that it smells like blood - there is only a bad smell if it has been sitting around putrefying. The same would be true of any other kind of ongoing bleeding. The sister needs to ask her doctor what the blood is about./if she is ill.

@haniyyahn He IS right. Just because your probably does not, it doesn't mean that the same is for other women. Yes, for many women, there IS a smell even if it is new and wasn't there for a while. It has nothing to do with the regular smell of blood. Second, the sheikh is not answering medical issues but Fiqh issues. The doctor won't know when it is required to pray and when one shouldn't. For the medical part, he said (if), so that part opens the door for her to ask her doctor. Allah knows best
