I don't think this commercial refers directly to italians. It just creates a funny situation for people to laugh about, and the italian restaurant is probably a very "classic" situation to set a conversation amongst strangers.
ahahahahaah che forte questo spot: noi italiani siamo proprio così..ahaahahah...all'estero poi non ne parliamo: che burini...che tamarri...bè basta vedere il nostro fantastico presidente del consiglio! w L'italia
truth is that dutch people don't know jackshit about italians,as much as all other foreign countries. But we italians are seen as friendly people so they don't really care bout offending us. Anyway this is funny and would have been the same if they used other people instead of us: everybody out of his country finds funny to tease the locals!! peace!
It's not just social class, it's education. I visit a huge number of bars and restaurants; I have known bartenders and restaurant owners who behave exactly like those depicted in this advertisement, but MANY MORE who are VERY quiet and polite. And I am customer of the latter, not the former. Yesterday and today (january 13th and 14th, 2009) I went to two bars here in Rome. Both bartenders had exquisitely good manners. So, biased commonplaces are of bad taste - from the Dutch I expected better.
1. It is TRUE that Italians have rude behaviours such as these MORE than the average of other European countries. E.g. talking loudly; talking in Italian and thinking nobody understands them; making rude comments about girls.
2. But I still feel insulted, because of the HUNDREDS of Italian I know that are PROFOUNDLY kind and polite. Just an example - I invite the Dutch to come to our universities and see if our doctors and scientists deserve this spot.
I study Medicine, I am going to graduate this year and I am going abroad as well in 2010. Europe or Northern America. Maybe for one year, maybe forever. But I am still proud of being Italian... nobody should be worried of labels, biases or nationalities; everybody should just be assessed based on what they INDIVIDUALLY are and what they individually do. Not on prejudices. ;)
I'm dutch and I moved to Italy in 2006. Yes, "some" Italians might display behaviour as pictured in this commecial, but - being a commercial - it's all an exageration. I know a lot of STUDENTS in the Italian Universities that don't deserve this spot, to say it with your words... However, as for the professors I can't always agree, especially when I think about the so called "baroni" at the Policlinico in Rome, just to give an example.
Italy is not doing well and many of my friends are leaving..
Yes, I generally agree with you. To be more exact: I happen to study in Rome (last year medical student at the Catholic University, Policlinico Gemelli, while I assume you talk about the Sapienza University, Policlinico Umberto I) and I have found that 60% of professors are either not well prepared scientifically or rude and disrespectful toward their work and their students. But the remaining 40% astounded me with their competences, knowledge, deep devotion to their profession and students.
In fact, I admit that I didn't choose the Sapienza Univ. because it is much larger, confused, ill-organized, and famous for its "baroni" (although amidst all those people there are wonderful scientists as well... the peak of the Gauss curve ;D). My university is swhat better on that respect.
Bottom line: I am leaving too and probably FOREVER; I already have contacts abroad, and have studied languages to boost my career. Still, I think we should HELP Italy, not insult it. Thank 4ur kindness ;)
2. Anyway that's a common behaviour I normally notice in Amsterdam...italin people just think that nobidy understand them and try to take advantages out of it.
BTW: the restaurant really looks like the spanish restaurant near Leidseplein in A'dam.
1. LOL...heel grappig! That's extremely funny...even if it's not realistic :), because an italian waiter that actually speaks dutch (even if with a terrible italian accent like mie :) ) he would never speak like that knowing that there're a lot of Dutch people that speak italian (because they're son of immigrated italians or just they like so much italy to learn the language.
It's clear that the original text was translated from Dutch to Italian..in fact in Dutch "prestatie" makes sense, and in this case it means that that the man did a good job having such a nice daughter...in italian instead it doesn't make a lot of sense...
who is the typical italian? what is typical and what is not? ... maybe for some "typical" you offended everybody ... examples are examples: they might the majority and they are not the totality.
you are a typical example of idiot, pretty much like berlusconi.
l'italiano tipico è becero e ignorante quanto quelli nel video. che poi ci sia una minoranza sparuta, colta e intelligente ma mal rappresentata, non lo metto in dubbio.
The target it's not Italin people, it's Dutch...and in Dutch vriendinnetjes is not sexist...in Italian I would have translated: "quando tu e le tue comari..." because this is the meaning in Dutch...
try to do the same spot with an arabian restaurant....everyone will call it racism.
and an angry mob will be in front of your house looking for some "head chopping time".
and Btw the guy told the truth about the lady, its common in holland to see nice young lady but the older ones are fat like Bibendums, i think that it comes from the shit they eat and all the beer you drink there.

what a stupid stereotype about italian people.
So im supposed to think that dutch people are all junkies pot smockers and prostitute clients ?
Italy is probably the coutry where you will find the most professional and polite bartenders and waiters, this stereotype is ridiculous.
this ad is a total bullshit and really offensive for me.

the meaning of the video is clear, and hits the point: they're typical italians. Look at the perfect example, Berlusconi.
Anyway, "prestazione" is totally meaningless in that phrase; as told, "amichette" is really a sexist and discriminatory sentence.

it's a venial mistake. everybody knows, after all, that you can't simply translate word by word.
but if you wanna be brilliant and show that dutch people "studies", you MUST know what you're gonna make fun of.
