Thank you!! Everything on this cake is buttercream! I did color the icing using food coloring gels, I believe I just added a TAD of brown to get the tan color! Good luck!
This cake is so awesome! I'm hoping to make one just like it in two weeks for my husbands fiesta party. Can you tell me is the buttercream frosting tinted to make the tan color? and if the other bright colored decorations from buttercream as well?
That is wonderful. So.. im trying to make this cake tommrorow.. any tips on how to cut the indentation on the base? how far did you cut it in the middle? and is that wax paper you used to smooth out the frosting??
I would assume so, it's very stable and tastes delicous. I've only done 1 cake completely covered in fondant, and that was 2 years ago...the icing help up great.
That's not an insulting question at all. I do use mixes, from my experience mix cakes taste better than stratch! ;) I believe the bottom is 2 10" rounds, with 1 mix per pan. The top was baked in my small pampered chef batter bowl..with 1 mix. Good luck!
your cake is amazing!!! i am going to try to make it this weekend for my husbands bday!! can you please tell me what you baked the top of the sombrero in?? and also do you have to let the frosting dry before smoothing it with a paper towel?? and is it buttercream frosting?? if not would that work?? thanks so much
Thank you very much! Best of luck on your cake this weekend. I baked the top of the hat in my small pampered chef batter bowl..but any pyrex (oven safe) bowl will give a good effect, you just may need to trim it some. I always use buttercream icing, I let it sit for about 5 minutes before I smooth. That way it has a crust on it, but not completely dry and will move and smooth out very nicely.
I've never tried it. I would think it would work, but would be harder because the wax paper crinkles, and could leave creases in the icing...but if you were super careful I suppose. :) Good luck!
Is there anyway you could give a full list of what all you used to make this cake! I'm going to attempt it for some friends joint birthday fiesta!! So cute!
The bottom I believe is 2 layers, 10" each and the top of the hat was baked in my small pampered chef batter bowl..1 mix. The rest is just a little carving, and some bright colors to accent with! Good luck and let me know if I can be any further help.
Hi! What tin did you use for the top of the hat, and also can you remember what size pan you used for the bottom of the hat?

This is amazing! I totally love it!You buttercream is soo smooth. Which buttercream do you use? Do you use hi ratio shortening?
RylanTy 2 years ago
Thank you!! I do not use hi ratio shortening, although it's something I have been considering. My buttercream recipe is as follows.
10 TBSP Water
1 Cup Shortening (I use store brand w/trans fat)
1 tsp salt
2 tsp clear vanilla
1/2 tsp butter flavor
2 lbs. powder sugar
Mix for 10 minutes.
