The term is abbreviated from ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL(ASSOC)then SOCCER to distinguish from RUGGBY FOOTBALL or RUGGER. The 2 footballs use to be the same game, got split up in 1863. Soccer got popular in europe where the term Football is use, where Ruggby is popular in north america & Australia where Football is the term. apparently, they both like to be call football.

Besides, we already have the Euro Cup, Asian Cup, African Cup, Cope America, and Gold Cup. "Once Every Four Years" seems to be the ideal time frame for such a magnanimous event as the World Cup. Soccer is not the most popular sport in America. Only 3 million tuned in for the first world cup game. The only reason I am watching the world cup is because that this commercial was on tv.
