But there is still hope by the name of Adele . So even though I agree with you we must not give up because the cream always rises to the top . There will be another Gerry Rafferty , Amy , Whitney and so on . . . .keep the faith , I am .
they certainly dont do them like they used to. The talents out there but there's more money for the industry pumping out miming, artificially created crap were there on a wage packet not royalties. Rafferty saw the industry for the shit producing money making machine it is. Justin, Bieber, Lady GaGa - who'll be listening to that shit in 30yrs. RIP Gerry !
I didn't relate this song to my life when it first came out-but then, I was only seventeen at the time. thirty some-odd years later, it has some pretty poignant significance.
This song is extremely poppy ... & oddly surreal at the same time. Very evocative of the era, especially since I went to college a stone's throw from Baker's Street at the time the song was released.
PLEASE NOTE: Bob Holness DID NOT play the tenor sax break on this song—It was played by Raphael Ravenscroft. Bob Holness is not a musician and has absolutely no connection with either Baker Street or Gerry Rafferty or Tenor Saxophones.
The myth that Bob Holness plays the sax in this song, is an urban legend: In other words, it's total 100% BULLSHIT!!!
This and "Miss You" by the Stones were the songs of the Summer of 78. Never forget it. I could be wrong, but "Miss You" kept this out of #1 in America and it hit #2.
Gerry had exceptional talent which rose above the exceptional difficulties he experienced in his life. He remained true to himself, keeping it all about the music and his craft rather than being seduced by the world of celebrity and pop stardom. God Bless You Gerry Rafferty and the family you've left behind for now. xxx
Classic! This video-song has: Great music-musicians-melody and solos, meaningful lyrics, and a haunting feel. What this song-video is lacking circa 2012: No one is running around, making faces, grabbing their privates or throwing gang signs. There's no army of background dancers. Not one mention of a b*tch or ho. No pentagrams, skulls, spiders, or snakes & no simulated or real sex acts. It wouldn't get air-play anywhere if it was released today. : ) Did I mention it's a great song?

It started as a wake and bake... originally... but then it became a Chia pet. if I added nothing- it died. But if I added something- it grew. Who knew something that was written from the personal experiences of a man whose only way to grow was to simply express it in a song would have such a lasting imprint? This song is a written testimony of a man who has experienced much of the same trials and tribunals many of us face everyday- back then as much as now. Change isn't as dramatic as some make
If you really appreciate artists and musicians and if you think you can judge any single song of Gerry Rafferty's and be an experienced critic of any standing ...you fekn deluded!!!!! Listen to the body of work the man created long before you were ..probably!
Gerry's Baker Street is just of just a very few songs that made my A-LIST of the greatest songs of all time. I hope Gerry found his Baker Street upon his passing RIP.
When I was a kid I used to play the sax. I listened to Lisas solo version of the song and I could never find it. One day I was in the car with friends and heard this song I cannot explain the feeling when I heard what reminded me of my childhood and those days in which I used to play my squeaky sax.
@BobTheMunificent Have you seen Michelle Phillips lately?.....Stevie Nicks?
Kind of sucks getting old....but at least we have something to hang over our kids and grandkids in that they keep LISTENING to what we listened to.......
E os filhas da puta do funk carioca colocaram um classico como esse como introdução de mais um dos funks mais podres das desgraças das favelas cariocas... OMG
Man, that intro trips me out every time. Sounds like it's being played backwards or something. Very cool tune. That guitar solo is killer. The video should've shown more of the other musicians though.
Rapael Ravenscrof has stated publicly that he wrote most of the Sax lead...in response Gerry had a guitar only version released recently...that was pre-baker street outtakes...has anyone heard it? My understanding is that Gerry would have done nothing less than compose every part of his songs....
I agree with all the recent comments. I don't think anyone could have made a more relevant song, it seemed like it was just written for me, and yet, so many people identify with it. It is our song. I'm 56 now but it still gets me and the music is just superb.
I almost have to pull over whenever Baker Street comes on the car radio because it always takes me somewhere else mentally. It came out at a time when I was struggling with career disappointments (when I "thought it held everything") and decisions..about settling "down in some quiet little town"...What a powerful song. Gerry, you left us way too early. RIP Mr. Rafferty.
If only Gerry had been able to "give up the booze and the one-night stands" like the autobiographical character in this classic song; he would still be with us. Cannot get burned out on any of his music, but this one brings tears every time. Strangely prescient of his life, it is melancholy but somehow uplifting and hopeful all at once.
My last name is Baker and the first time I heard this song was when my big brother took me to a strip club for the first time and the first dancer I saw danced to this song...just for us Baker boys
that was a joke, i say that was a joke son, laugh ! pay attention when i'm talkin to ya boy ! these kids now a days are about as sharp as a bowlin ball !
I can't help getting chills every time the sax part starts. In fact I spent about 5 years looking for this song until I found it on Youtube. And it was worth it. :3
I think this has to be my favourite song of the 70s. I was living in Seymour Place a few streets up from Baker Street. I could cry when I hear this song.
