this speech can be interpreted in many ways, Eastern philosophical thought ( buddhism) far before the story of jesus, put emphasis on serving others and being totally selfless. This helps those seeking enlightenment accept the present moment as the truth and realization that enlightenment isn't something we are seeking but something that is always there.

You are correct in saying that it is about serving others, but in doing so, we do actually serve God. To love and care for others is also to love God. It is the greatest commandment we are given as humans. To love God and to love others. We must lay down our selfish ambitions and give back to those in need. Jesus Christ is our role model for this. This was the essance of Dr. Kings speech.
