I find that comment about Perry Como hard to believe. Is that documented? Apparently, Perry gave them their big chance. He put the Larks in front of a coast-to-coast audience for the first time, even before they won on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. I assume they sang Lucy Brown because it was in their repertoire, they had just recorded it, but hadn't released it yet. Eugene Mumford sang lead on TV but not on the record.
love this video and song. I grew up in the bronx during the 50s and loved the groups that predated the doo wops. My first memory of the Larks was My Reverie.
Fantastic indeed! Lead singer Eugene Mumford is generally considered to be among the top 5 R&B lead singers. They were on the Perry Como show in 1951, & Como was so afraid of being shown up by Mumford tht he had them sing,"Lucy Brown"-- a silly song much like Charlie Brown.
This has nothing on the Eddie Cantor or Fats Domino versions, especially not in how they don't even sing the right lyrics...
