great video man. i've been having trouble hiting my 3-6 iron because i lose my power to early. i am going to the driving range tomorrow to work on this.
Tiger has a problem of swinging under the plane always had even with butch,he's actually trying to reduce his lag,and return the club to the same position as address,a rounder golf swing where his weight moves around not right to left.Holding the angle in the wrists is bad advice for amateur's,it inhibits a free release of the club head.
I love the video but the 2008/2007 comparison in the beginning I'm not so sure how accurate it is. When he's hitting from the rough Tiger has said he keeps more of his weight on his front foot to help him hit down on the ball. That may be why his head did not move that much.
I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, just offering a different interpretation. :)
Even in the rough, on a healthy knee, he would be turning that left leg in a bit more, such as in the 2007 video. Tiger has been notorious for his head moving back a bit on his swings.
good video. good commentary. I think you got the first bit wrong about his left knee. The things you said are true, however, on the left one tiger has his ball back in his stance and doesn't quite swing back as far-he is playing a low shot-and this is why his head is staying in the same place, over the ball more. On the right, Tiger is playing his standard full swing shot . Thus, getting behind the ball more and swinging back further. (About the knee-Tiger has slightly opened his left foot!)
I love everything, great video - but i'm gonna have to say the opening commentary about his less lateral motion is wrong. It could be assumed that he did do this to prevent excess pressure from on his knee, but quotes from Steve Williams and Hank Haney show that he's been working extremely hard to keep that head still - i'm gonna have to assume he's doing that because he got better - no one works harder than Tiger on his swing......except maybe the big VIJAY
The footage was taken early 2007 for the human golfer movement towards the right foot is very important takes a lot of pressure off the body and makes it alot simpler to turn the shoulders i can understand tiger trying to keep the head still to take some pressure off his knees.
However, you can't really compare those two swings very well. 2007 was a tee shot. 2008 was a shot out of a bad lie. You can see the ball is placed well back of center in 2008 while in 2007 it is closer to center. These factors could easily affect weight transfer
hmmm, maybe. But I think your both wrong. On the left, Tiger is playing a low shot-ball back in stance and doesn't swing back as far-thus, keeping his head more over the ball. On the right, Tiger is playing a normal full swing shot and so gets behind it more hitting it higher (ball further forward in stance). In regards to his knee, Tiger has opened his left foot more towards the target which has a significant difference on the pressure on the knee coming in to impact.
Most all accomplished golfers maintain the angle. It is ALL in the Grip!! Keeping each hand on its respective side of the club! Simple, but unless your shown it can be hard to do.
Because the club should fall by gravity in the downswing, you can not manufacture lag without doing something else quirky.
Excellent explaination. You explain concepts that have taken me years to learn elsewhere. You explain the most important element/s of the golf swing in one video i.e. how the hips work during the transition and downswing.
that last swing of tiger, from 'up the line' hes actually hitting a fade. you can see into his follow through how his left arm is higher that the right arm, and at the finish the clubhead is higher than the grip. tells me he was hitting a hold-off fade
thanks for the video, good images of the hip starting the down swing. Something i am working on myself at the moment to increase power and reduce any over the top motions.
very good tip

It's the shoulders. The shoulders stay closed to the target line until impact when the are squared up.

i think the big difference between 08 and 07 is that in 07 he is past parallel and in 08 he has shortened it hence the less movement.

he didnt have as much weight shift because he improved his swing .... look at all the tour players now ... barley any weight shift if any

the only real issue, is that on the left he has a 5 iron from the rough, and on the right it looks like no more than an 8 iron from the tee.

I agree he is defo playing a different type of shot which changes the characteristics of the swing, good spot.

could it also have been that tiger was attempting a steeper swing due to hitting out of the rough in 2008?
