  • I wish people would sing and dance in the subway today, how cool would that actually be?

  • Did they film this with a calculator... damn you 240p

  • soo a sandwich (any sandwich) costs 5$. I want a sandwich with another sanwich inside it

  • Well....atleast they kept it real. LOL!

  • If only riding the subway was this much fun.

  • The 70's, a better time

  • @ningagingaproducts Not in NYC though, hehe.

  • As per some previous comments, I was also looking for this for years and years. Delighted to have found it!

  • Comment removed

  • Classic Sesame Street, probably the best show on Television, and best kid show..very creative and smart

  • Who is the muppet who is pink skinned, has glasses and has black hair with a hat?

  • And you can STILL contribute to Rudy's 2008 campaign for President! He was in charge during 9/11, you know. Oh, you do know? He mentioned it every ten seconds for an entire year, huh? I see. Well, it's nice that HE got a benefit out of the worst terror attack on US soil in history, eh? He was so good as 9/11 leader, he had psychic powers that told him Building 7 was gonna fall down before there was any inmdication the strcuture was even in danger. What a guy.

  • miss piggy's gonna kill that green granny if she sees this: 1:39-1:48

  • Bert's huge.

  • Coming from a Wisconsin farm kid, I've always been curious.....are the things I've heard about the NY subways true: the packed-tight-as-sardines cars, rampid crime (Guardian Angels Safety Patrol [do they still exist?] all over and on trains to help prevent crime), extreme ear killing noise, danger of falling off narrow...what are they called....safety platforms and what else? Is half of these stories true, or is most of it just a myth?

  • @stevedogan i want to know too. i come from florida where the only thing thats underground is water. i've been on a subway once in DC and from what i heard, NYC subway is way dirtier. but i'm curious as well.

  • @stevedogan NY prior to 1997 was something like that but it's a cleaner and SAFER City now.

  • @Docmananoff So what happened in '97? More police or more to it than that? Is that Guardian Angel "gang" still there, or did the police or city council make them go away? The stuff I read about them seems to indicate they were 1 of the best things to come in that city. We used to have an attempt at getting one organized in a city called Appleton (pop. 60,000 or somewhere around that last time I checked) but it never went very far. :(

  • @jfpinell One name: Rudy Giuliani! HE Happened! LOL He became mayor in 1994 but by 1997 he had basically wiped the city 'clean'. A majority of New Yorkers say that he actually ruined NYC because even though it's now a much safer city to live in...the personality if the city was affected. I totally agree. VH1 aired a special once called 'NY77' about the famous blackout of 1977, look that up, it's VERY informative. Chicago's subways are the closest thing to what NY's used to be like.

  • @Docmananoff It's not really Giuliani. The crime rate in the city was already dropping significantly as the economy improved. Heck, the crime rate was dropping significantly EVERYWHERE, and unless you want to credit Giuliani for the crime rate dropping in big cities across the nation....

  • The Guardian Angels were there and they did help out with a lot of street situations but their presence was never 'feared' or anything, actually the dudes on the street found them a bit amusing. Their time was mainly in the 80's to late 90's. Not too many left these days.

  • @stevedogan Mostly true. Depending on the line and time-of-day, cars can be pretty tightly packed. Crime is not nearly as bad as it was in the 70s and 80s, but not uncommon. I've never seen the Guardian Angels on the train. Noise is truly awful on some lines. The IRT lines have a lot of tight turns, so the wheels screech around corners. Some people ride with ear protection. Falling off platforms happens fairly often, usually due to being drunk, sick or suicidal. Visit NYC to see for yourself.:)

  • @cruvolo

People don't fall off the platforms THAT often. 40 people died last year on the subways - even if all of them were folks being hit by trains (and all of THOSE were people falling or jumping or being pushed) that's still not even one a week. Given how many people are standing on a subway platform at any given moment in the city, one a week is very LOW odds.

  • @Conuly Agreed it is not often relative to the number of passenger rides. However as an absolute number, it happens often. If you ride long enough, you will see an incident or the aftereffects of a line being shut down by an incident. There are many people who fall off the platform or train and survive as well. Cheers.

  • @cruvolo

Last month I saw a little girl ALMOST fall into the gap between the platform and the train at the Union Square station. Her whole leg fell in but luckily the rest of her didn't follow.

  • @stevedogan

    To Wisconsin farm kid:

Yes, the cars can be packed tight as sardine cans, and tighter, at rush hour. Nothing like having some stranger's face jammed into the hollow of your neck at 8:30am. =)

Rampant crime? Nah. People have a very outdated image of NYC's crime rate. Crime has gone down almost 75% in the last 20 years. Of course there's still crime, but nothing like how it used to be.

Noise? Well, we're used to it, but a country person might need some adjustment time. X)

  • I'm in Phiily and we STILL use tokens for the Subway and the El!!!

  • @videonut33 I hear you. I love Philly - but it's ime to modernize and standardize, across all zones and modes, with a method similar to the MetroCard or the CharlieCard. I visit Philly regularly from North Jersey, and honestly, though I love SEPTA (I'm a railfan - I love all rail systems), I'm sure you'd agree that the good people of Philly deserve a state of the art fare collection system to match what is, for all its faults, one of America's historic and best public transport networks.

  • I like how this teaches kids the pros and cons of the subway XD

  • Oh, you mean back when NYC was still a...CITY? I remember those days very well as those were my first and greatest memories of NY. They forgot the lights going off and on due to bad electrical connections on the tracks. No air conditioning, packed cars cause they ran fewer trains on each line. Yup. Sesame Street kicked ass because it was kid show for real folks. I wish we still had tokens here, I hate the metro card. No annoying automated voice over the loud system.

  • This was so many of my mornings after coming home from the bars and discos.

  • "buy a token now" - we still use tokens on the subway in Toronto!

  • "buy a token now" Hehe NYC Subways don't use tokens anymore

  • 87 people don't travel on the Subway

  • you could loose your purse or you might loose something WORSE on the subway...hahaha!

  • @jenabd like your virginity!

  • subway restaurants or mta new york should use this for a commercial

  • Where was Ernie?

  • oh yeah, LSD definately had a role in this composition. I love the middle part with the ahahahahahah .. far out

  • "And we'll go right by your local address..." CLASSIC!

  • Ya think the first muppet character that bumps into the lady is a Junkie Muppet? Any thoughts?

  • @derocket88 I definitely think that Muppet was a nod to the fact that junkies use subways. He may have also been there to balance out the grooviness. SD

  • Lose your purse or something worse on the subway... I was probably 5-6 years old growing up in New Jersey and terrified of Subways after watching this! ...In 1:35 did Kermit say Heard that? Notice everyone's dancing but Burt. Hmmm? Perhaps since Ernie didn't travel with him?

  • @derocket88 lol so funny I love it so much and remember it vividly. Hello fellow Gen Xers

  • lmao the express goes right by my local address

  • Man, remember when Sesame Street was all grimy and inner-city? I miss those days. It's too squeaky-clean and upper-middle class now. Sigh.

  • @Lampbane It got lame in the mid-80's.

  • Why the hell is Bert so huge?

  • @zshaw7549 HAHA I was just wondering the SAME THING! He's HELLA huge!

  • Silly hipsters, being all rude to the elderly as they mill about trying to decide if the subway is too mainstream.

  • This was one of my FIRST memories of Sesame Street. I saw it then never saw it again. I've hummed this song all my life. Thank you for posting. Means a lot.

  • @Cuteblondie1972 Uhhhh...a cock is another term for a rooster. People take that work SO far out of context today.

  • ...CITY KIDS! *shakes head* I'd never be able to handle that. Concrete, glass, steel, noise, crowds, traffic as far as you can see. Gimme' my moo-cow & pail or my pony & plow & I'm happy. I'm guessing it's something you have to be born into to be able to handle. I've heard that in those cities, it's common to park your car come back 5 minutes later & it's broken into...Sad. Heck here I never even lock my door! We have ONE local cop in town & he doesn't even carry a gun or duty belt (no need to).

  • the green muppet at the beginning with the shaggy hair and shades reminds me of Lou Reed :D --haven't heard this in 20 years, thanks for posting it!

  • "Come on, step inside. You'll get taken for a ride on the subway."

    "Heard that!"

  • this was before my time (I'm a 90s kid) but this is ridiculously catchy! And so real...like, the kid in the beginning being like, "Watch it lady!" and then "Yeah, okay Grandma,"

  • That wolf at the beginning of the video is a stalker.

  • YOU MIGHT LOSE SOMETHING WORSE ON THE SUBWAY?? LMAO.. i died when I heard the granny say that. I bet alot of people did ;)

  • @evilwoman24 Funny? Not really.....she's probably refering to the crime rate. I've been told there are people being beat up, robbed, and even killed all the time on those.

  • @jfpinell seeing your other comments you must not live or ever lived in the city. It's not ALWAYS like that by the way. You watch too much news. The news shows 55mins of bad things happening and 5 mins worth of something nice to try to make up for it. Look it doesn't matter where you live now a days. The city is really not a bad place to live. Try being more optimistic instead of being pessimistic. You will be happier :) be well :)

  • @evilwoman24 I've ended up in the city a few years. But even on the edge things just weren't for me. It was only a pop. of 11,000, but I could tell the difference in attitude, if you will of people there. Several times when a cop walked up to me and in effect said "you can't do that here. It makes people nervous." All I did was walk by a mom with her kids saying hello, once walking about A BLOCK behind 2 women never even SAID anything. Around here you could do that all day & no one would mind.

  • This is possibly the best Subway scene I've ever seen ever.

I want to re-create this, live, with people in costumes. (Improv Everywhere--where are you?)

  • My all time fave Sesame song

  • this is awesome. i'm so glad classic sesame street has so many fans!!

  • I found this on here a few years ago after YEARS of searching for this song. I loved it when I was 3 and I love it and cherish it even more now. Awesome.

  • @DalyTheThird That means we're about the same age. I love it. I didn't remember it sounding so psychedellic. They sound Electric Prunes or something. Acid Rock, groovy

  • does this song derive from an other song?

  • lol so great I forgot about this also love how kermits look on his face he looks annoyed some lol

  • @1:45 that muppet in the trench coat with the big pedo mustache is totally beating off. "Come on step inside, you'll get taken for a ride" indeed.

  • thumbs up if you clicked on this becuase you wanted the muppets to sing about the subway sandwich shop :D

  • So good! When I was a kid my local city didn't have a subway yet so I was always jealous that the Sesame Street gang here got to ride on one.

It's also rare to see Bert not with Ernie in any sketches that involve other characters.

  • moustache man with pink face was richard hunt then he became frank oz

  • If Kermit and that old lady were marryed Miss Piggy wouid kill both.

  • I wish the world was this musical in real life. How much better the world would be. Are any of you from New York? You should know this song.

  • I wish the world was this musical in real life. How much better the world would be.

  • Funny, at about 1:39 you see three groups of people dancing together. Kermit and that old lady are dancing together (both green), along with Cindy Lou and that boy (both pink), and the group with two characters colored differently from each other are a bit obscured, or at least I didn't even notice them until I watched that part again. The first two certainly had some presence over the third. Underlying message? Coincidence? Likely the latter although I wouldn't be surprised at either one.... :D

  • @beedrill5ER That's Betty Lou.

  • @Fartingbellybutton Yargh, lol I knew it was something-Lou. I know a "Cyndi Lou" in real life and that must have been what screwed me up. Loads better than when I always got her confused with Prairie Dawn at least. ^^;

  • Stand clear of the dancing muppets.

  • I was so afraid they were all going to get mugged before the song was over.

  • @MrMichaellasky ...LOL

  • subway.....SUBWAY!!! gosh! you don't need to yell! you'll scare the Train

  • HEY THIS ISN'T SESEME STREET BECAUSE THIS LOOKS TOO OLD AND IT DOESN'T HAVE ELMO. ELMO IS THE STAR OF SESEME STREET AND THERE IS NO ELMO!

  • @gt500cowboy I hope you're joking. Sesame Street aired for years before Elmo even came, and aired for many more years before he became the ridiculous "star" of the show. When I was growing Big Bird was the star.

  • @FSinatra1982 Amen to that! Elmo is beyond annoying.

  • LMAO!!!! They jammin on this subway!!! dancing !!! as kermit misses his stop!!! that is classic. thanks for the old skool flash back!

  • Did you hear Bert say hi Kirmit at 0:33

  • @sfpopp1 LMAO yes I sure did. To be on a subway & see someone you know is so true to life

  • there is only 1 sesame street character

  • Who is the only 1 Sesame Street character.

  • haah haaahh!! Look at Kermit's face at 1:48!!!

  • @jzerony I KNOW! the hand working the puppet is like, all in a fist!

  • man the subway man i've lost things on there before. dang it this brings back good ol memories. love the nyc subway!

  • This is one of the childhood songs that I hum in my head. I've been doing it for years. I forgot the verses, but knew the chorus. I've asked people around my age if they remember this song. All have said that they couldn't. Thanks for posting this video because now there is proof that this song is real.

  • ohh makes me miss nyc...!!!!! (oh yea and my childhood)

  • bert is there but not ernie

  • OMG!!!!! I forgot about this one!!!This was HOT!!!

  • I think Kermit's a bit put off by Bert's b.o.

  • SUDWAY!!! THATS CUTE!!! :-)

  • That sure sounds like Lew Soloff on the trumpet solo.

  • why does kermit look bitchy and creeped out the whole time in this video?

  • @theremixphilly

I know, and he was kinda rude to Bert. Is this the only skit they've ever been in together?

  • @surferfantastic - I'm not sure- I mean they are the same voiced -Henson

  • @theremixphilly

Actually Frank Oz did Bert, Henson did Kermit. But it's still the only skit I've ever seen them in together.

  • @surferfantastic you're right- and I think I knew that in the back of my head- woops--

  • what a hell?? they guy with the glasses turns up twice

  • wow half those lines wont get past the censors nowadays.. to bad everytime i hear that effin elmo song i wonder who killed sesame street's creativity and swapped it for crap cookies

  • @kuronekochan1992 You mean crap VEGGIES. The cookies have been axed.

  • @Vesnicie ROFL! yea cuz cookie monster is a junkie

  • I bet Miss Piggy would flip if she saw Kermit dancing with the old lady at 1:39.

  • WOW...If I broke out into a song on the subway, i'd get looked at funny. Or get some loose change...:).

  • @realizer221 Thank god this was way before Elmo came along. Elmo would have totally ruined this great clip like he ruins everything else. I am so thankful I was a kid in the 70's and got to enjoy this great show before it was dumbed down.

  • @kevin07979 Amen brother!

  • Wow, this neighborhood has really gentrified since then.

  • This is the gritty urban Sesame Street...They kept it real back in the day.

  • Wow, I remember seeing this in the 70s! I always looked forward to watching Sesame Street as soon as I got home from school. Those were fun times.

  • When i rode DC's METRO and ATL's MARTA i had that song playn in my head.

  • - Tymbark

    - Your father is "jełop"

  • what the hell did kermit say at 0:58, my cock just went bi?

  • @themaaan1990 "My stop just went by."

  • @themaaan1990 - Kermit said "My stop just went by.." referring that the train passed the station that he wanted to get off at. New Yorkers often refer to subway stations as "Stops". This actually happens to New York visitors not paying attention to schedules and signs, and unknowingly get on board an express train that skips by the station (stop) that they wanted to get off at. They learn quickly, afterwards.

  • @themaaan1990 LMFAO YEH HE DID

  • @themaaan1990 0:58 "Hey my STOP just went by!"

  • Comment removed

  • What's with the red, green, yellow and orange lights in the subway windows as the subway drives along the tracks in the subway tunnel?

Whenever I'm on the MBTA Red Line, Orange Line or Blue Line, all I see in the MBTA subway tunnels is fluorescent lights.

  • @tpirman1982 Their in NYC

  • @H20654 Obviously. You take the NYC subway lines, by any chance?

  • @tpirman1982 No but I used to take the MBTA from Worcester and all though Boston and the North Shore

  • @H20654 Well, I take the MBTA Commuter Rail trains, buses, Red Line, Orange Line, and Blue Line on the T.

  • @tpirman1982 So do I!

  • I so miss BERT. Can't believe they would be stupide enough to get rid of all the good characters. Bert&Ernie were NOT GAY. They were just roommates.

  • @natsumexmikan43vr If they were gay would that be so bad? Just a thought.

  • "ooooooh i'm so hot i could die" haha

  • i love this video.

btw, the train is a mock up of the R1-R9 series subways running as an "E" train.

supposedly, they're in new york, if you take a close look, you'll see a vintage MTA logo (the M logo), and clearly states it's an "E" train

amazing how things were different back then. now we have R160's on the E train

  • I noticed that the old lady on the subway (green skin, white hair...the one who cautions "you might lose your purse") looks almost exactly like the old lady Operator from the "Telephone Rock" song...the only difference is that in "Telephone" she had a blue nose and in "Subway" her nose was more of a mauve. Maybe it was redder because "it's so hot I could die" in the subway, I don't know...but her voice is a lot nicer in "Subway" than it was as a "Telephone Operator"

  • "If you're in a hurry, take the express...

it'll go right by your local address"

    I love that part!

Poor Bert's arm always looked like it was dislocated!

I'm just a small-city gal and the first time I ever rode in the big city on a subway (in my late 20's) I was humming this song over and over in my head

    Made me smile!

(Even though I knew I could "lose my purse, or I might lose something worse")

  • @TammysToys Lol

  • I love this song! And I'd never thought I would be able to watch this again. Thanks a million!

  • GROOOOOOO-VVVVVVVY..

  • NEAT!!!!!!!!

  • Addooooooooroo..

    otimo videoo :)

  • someone told me this was made with puppets but I don't think so-- I recognize at least Bert and Kermit so some of the people are definitely real actors.

  • that looks like an R1 they are on

  • 00:44 there is helen happy with her brother harold from "Hunt For Happiness"

    look it up lol

  • Even now the song is telling it like it is on the subway--though regrettably, the straps aren't in the trains anymore. :-(

  • Cameos: Bert, Betty Lou, Kermit the Frog, and, one of the Busby Twins

  • Bert looks a bit stunned to be left by himself at the end when everyone else gets off.

  • awesome.. the vintage are still the best in my book!

  • no loud music on the subway... subway !!!!

  • I looove the dance break at 1:40, kermit and the old wowser (the same one having trouble with the band in the telephone box?) dancing cheek to cheek...kermit doing his "not impressed" face near the end..fabulous!

  • OMG...I remember this, can't believe how these songs stick in your head!

  • THIS WILL PROBABLY BE STUCK IN MY HEAD

  • @Pheeelupwashere Happens

  • how funny is this, this song is so true about the subway

  • "you could loose your purse or you might loose something worse on the subway" Wow. she sounds like she's speaking from experience. When I'm in situations I usually ask for an adult.

  • @easygrinn It don't want think about the muppets being in danger on the subway....could she mean you could die there!?

  • "Swaying to and fro, it's the only way to go on The Subway!"

We N'Awlineans get that same kind of sensation on a streetcar... :^)

  • OH -MY - LORD.... I never in my life thought I'd see this episode again. I haven't seen this in 32years!! I don't believe it, I'm back in the first grade again.

  • overshades of 70's punk ??

  • Sesame Street + muppets what? sorry muppets were like only on as i was just a little kid but they are fifferent correct?

  • What does the girl sing after Kermit sings "my stop just went by"?

  • @ThatGuyFromYouTueb "your thumb is in my eye".

  • @ThatGuyFromYouTueb she says "Say, your thumb's in my eye."

  • Five bucks if you sings this on the way home tonight.

  • @ThatRoachBoy

HAHA! I was thinking the same thing. This is catchy
