Well, I have to say that I am addicted to peanut butter and Thank God I have never sufferred Salmonella. As some of the people that have replied I think this problem has to do with a poor quality of some brands and that's why other brands just don't have any complain from consumers. Yes, I think there is some animal product which they use to create peanut butter, since the back label says there is saturated fat in the product. Saturated fat only comes from animal products. Otherwise, it does not make sense. I have crushed peanuts at home and they become powdery. So the oil does not come from the peanuts.

ummm the people who produce & handle the food certainly are responsible. There was cross-contamination in this case - so they did something WRONG in handling or growing the food. There should be solid testing in place to locate & dispose of poisened food before it reaches us. So YES there are safeguards in place, it's not just chance that the food supply is as it is. captkirk999, Not just organic peanut butter but any natural peanut butter will have oil separation in the jar. This is natural, and you open the jar at room temperature and thoroughly stir it, and then refrigerate it.

Corporate non-natural peanut butter is chemically treated (with hydrogenated oil) to prevent separation. I have been eating lots of Smuckers & other natural brands for decades, with no problems. So, what is the source of your assertion: "Be careful of brands with too much oil."
