Does he play it in a lower key, or does the piano transpose now? I can't tell - but it looks like he's still playing it in C, but the song is obviously so much lower.
I read an interview once where he admitted thinking about "what am I going to eat after the concert?" occasionally. I'm sure doing the same songs over and over can get old, but for me the best part of performing is the audience - somehow they make things seem new each time.
nypchung, i am by no means saying i am a "musical artist", but i have played a few small- scale concerts in my two and a half years of playing the piano, and i can tell you that most artists never get bored with their own "stuff", as they realise the endless potential that their material has. I have been studing Billy Joel's and Elton John's music in particular for two years, and i have come to the conclusion that they can keep coming up with new variations on old songs, and thus never get bored
@nypchung hey, there are some songs that eventually do your head in when you play them so often, yet there are others that seem to sparkle all the time, the interaction with the audience changes from every concert, there are some pieces you just enjoy playing and when the audience enjoy the piece,m you like it even more :)
Really? You think so? Well, sorry if I made you mad by saying that... I just noticed more talent in him in the early days. But yes, I agree with you on the fact he does play with more concentration today.
Yeah i kind of agree with both of you, he does play a little better these days cause he's been playing for so long now & playing with great pianists like Richard Joo, but I think he used to play a lot looser in the earlier days and improvised a lot more which was fun to listen to.

...its floating around on youtube, but that version of New York State of Mind is great too.
I love the way he does it now. Such a soulful and beautiful rendition. I have the boot of this show, it was from Japan in 2006. There's a great version of "The Stranger" from this concert.

What do you mean "Not as good as he used to play it" ? It's the Joel man he doesn't lose his touch he just perfects these songs even more!

Wow, I think his voice has actually gotten BETTER since he's gotten older! At times it sort of reminds me of Paul McCartney's voice.
