Surely God introduced Job to Satan, told him about him? God made a wager with Satan. perhaps none of it would ever have happened if God had not mentioned his name.It appears to me that it was all Gods idea.Satan assumes the position of a vasal, on 1 of his regular visit to the real power.Visits that he has to make, to acknowledge who is really pulling the strings.1st problem for Job is the storm. Then later, at the end of it all,God speaks to him out of another storm, perhaps even the same 1.
Here's what Job should have said to god: "Who am I to question YOU?! I am the one that has to suffer because you wanted to impress the devil! Stop whining about your hard job, Mr. Omnipotent, if you can't take care of your creatures you shouldn't have created them.... And no, I don't want new children, bring the old ones back from the dead, jerk. Sorry that I had to be so direct, but it was necessary, Mister." That would have shown him!
hmmm, an omnipotent being conducting tests ? begs the obvious question if he knew the outcome why put the guy through this suffering .Anyways Bible never made sense but interesting video ,thnx guys
@sausage4mash I think the theologians in this video were trying to say it is a folk tale and didn't actually happen... A made-up story to illustrate a deeper point, or points!
I don't know if everyone would agree, but it was definitely the impression I got from some of these speakers. Cheers for watching and commenting.
If I thought they where preaching at any point I would of stopped watching , I also got the vibe they saw it as a fable.
one subject I find interesting is the dead sea scrolls ,hard to find any unbiased appraisal of the scrolls , hope they may touch on this in the future .
i see your point though i think you mean omnicient (all knowing) rather than omnioptent (all powerfull) and i think on the whole i agree with bibledex that it is a story to show the great faith and endurance a person can have.
this is a point that puzzled me for a long time and so was one of the questions i asked when i was lucky enough to spend a day with the arch bishop of canturbury rowan williams
The real horror of the book of Job for me is gods callous indeferance to the death of Job's family. He let them be killed for basicaly a bet. Remember this is the time before Jesus and the supposed goiing to heaven thing. It is yet again an afermation that god is a mudrer amoungst his many other crimes.
God is clearly the villain of the piece. He allows the devil to tempt him into gambling, with no mention of what he would forfeit had he lost - hurt pride, maybe? And why is God supposed to have faith in man? I thought it was the other way round.
Great video, but it just reaffirms my view of OT God as an very unpleasant character.
Job was over sacrificing cattle as sin offerings. Killing and eating.
Satan: "hey get a load of this idiot"
Job is so dumb he doesn't' get it. Even when god takes the moment to speak to Job, and say so when you catch a fish does it have a chance to beg for mercy trade beg for its life, and WOULD YOU LISTEN.
God then shows Job the mercy fallen humans fail to show lower beings in their keeping. Job goes on blindly killing cattle, who are probably wondering what they did to earn suffering.
I certainly enjoy them although 60 symbols is more my scene. Keep them coming and perhaps do something to introduce the personalities talking as you have done with the science based ones.
I think people like you are exactly who we hope to inform and entertain... We have a trip to some Biblical locations planned in the next few weeks, which I think should make things a bit more interesting!
I'll reiterate my support and enjoyment from your work on this project, even as a staunch rationalist.
This was another great video, about an interesting and stylistically distinct book that takes on, but completely fails to surmount the Problem of Evil. (Though I do wish there had been mention of Elihu seeming to be wedged in, perhaps by later scribes.)
Thanks again for these videos; some of us are enjoying them :-)

@sausage4mash Not only are we looking at the Dead Sea Scrolls, but in a couple of weeks we're planning to film where they were found!
They will definitely be popping up in a few of our videos over the next month or two.

Yes, a remarkably happy ending, since his family was replaced.
A child knows enough to not be consoled by offerings of replacement for a deceased pet.
His family is DEAD.

hey brady!
make a video about Abraham
quite a interesting character
entoris476 2 years ago
@entoris476 We're trying to do all the books of The Bible first... Then if people seem up for it, we might start looking at specific characters, etc.
If we do that, I'm pretty sure Abraham would be high on the list as an interesting topic!
bibledex 2 years ago
oh yah!
i forgot that nearly all of the Bible chapters are named after character! :D!
I nearly forgot they were chapters :)!

If I fish begged for its life after I caught it, I'd keep that fish safe forever!

LoL. I thought of that episode of the Simpson where they go to japan. And Bart is gutting fish, he finds the talking one.

@Sturrmm Hi, you likely subbed by accident when subbing one of my other channels (@periodicvideos or @sixtysymbols I guess).
This channel takes a look at the Bible from an outsider's view, like I have with the periodic table and physics stuff..
A lot of people who like science react funnily to these videos though, thinking it is a religious thing!? I suggest simply unsubbing...
Though a lot of science people I know have enjoyed these as an impartial description of the Bible books.

@tehinfidel Cheers for that...
Hard to get everything in... I had about 50 minutes of footage for this one and tough deciding what to chop!
The big hope is that people like you raise talking points and others can chip in with comments, much like at @sixtysymbols and @periodicvideos
Just hope it stays civil and intellectual... and doesn't get all crazy because it involves THE BIBLE!
bibledex 2 years ago
Maybe at the end of the books, you can do a TOO HOT FOR TV series with all the extra bits :-)
