So what happens when some of this air pressure is removed? This is what does occur on commercial airliners, or travelling up to a high altitude resort. What has this done to our state of pressure equilibrium?
These children did an amazing experiment and I am very proud of them! Yes I agree with MAD2LAD, they were probably just doing it for school, and even if they weren't, what is the problem? At least they're being productive, not like most of the teenagers we always see wasting time not willing to learn anything. Ignore all the immature comments that were previously said.

While it is said that the oxygen molecules are being 'consumed' in the fire, in reality, the same number of oxygen atoms are in the glass the whole time.
(ALL of the atoms in the glass remain in the glass... matter is not created or destroyed)
What's REALLY happening then???
The heat from the fire causes the air to expand (get bigger). When the balloon is placed on top, it forms a seal. The seal keeps the air inside on the inside, and the air outside on the outside.

The oxygen gets 'used up' and the fire goes out.
Then the air inside cools as the heat can escape through the glass.
As the air cools, it contracts (gets smaller).
The shrinking air causes a 'pulling' pressure on the glass and the balloon.
The balloon is softer than the glass and so the balloon gets sucked in.
