    Eccles brought the Restoration tradition to its close. After Purcell’s death in 1695 he was undoubtedly the greatest of the Restoration theatre composers. Continuing in Purcell’s footsteps, The Judgment of Paris was the last of the masques, [...] More important, he also created a sensitive secco recitative better suited to English than any that was to follow for about 200 years. Had Semele been produced, it might have laid the foundations for a national English opera.
