Actually, in Poland they write his name as Fryderyk Szopen, which the Polish pronunciation of Frederic Chopin. It's so much easier to feel what Chopin felt when you're Polish because of Polish songs like 1:50-2:00. It's like the spirit of Poland exists in his music... That's why The Nazis took his monument apart and moved it away when they were trying to destroy anything Polish during the IIWW...

His music represents and stands for something...

His name was Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Polish Pianist who played for the local Radio dureing the Holocaust. His entire family was killed in the internment camps, he was the only survivor.

Yes, the movie was incredibly sad. It showed a lot of graphic things of what the Germans did to Jews such as the main character. But it managed to retain some happiness in all the midst of this sadness. One of the best things was that the "pianist" character survived! It is based off of a true story about a guy named Szpilman which is his last name. His first name is hard to spell.
