@richard21solava A lot of the time - from what I know - it is much like cow branding. In the west, ranchers can own thousands of acres of land that they let horses and cattle graze on. With so much land, it can be difficult to tell if that is your neighbor's cattle or horses. With branding, you have your ranch's symbol for you and others to recognize who owns that horse. Not agreeing or disagreeing with the practice. Hope this helps and sorry if I'm totally wrong :/
