I do agree with you about the Silent Hill movie sucking though, and Christoph Gans deserving to be drug out into the street and shot (metaphorically, not literally). To it's credit though, the movie does do a pretty good job of maintaining the tone and pacing of the first and third games. It just manages to get EVERY SINGLE FRIGGIN DETAIL ABOUT EVERYTHING IN SILENT HILL wrong.
I object to the interpretation of Pyramid Head as a "rapist". I realize that it's a common interpretation for fans of the series, but I just don't feel that it's a characterization that is warranted within context of the entire game. Visit my blog (the site is linked from my profile) and search for "Pyramid Head" if you're interested in my reasons why.
I was actually a big fan of the movie since I thought it did a good job kinda following the soul of the Silent Hill games. I'm eagerly anticipating the 2nd movie.
Hey Everybody! I have just released my new electronic album “Sub-Zero” which is heavily influenced by the world of Silent Hill and the music of Akira Yamaoka. If you're interested you can listen to the full album on my youtube channel, as well as download the album for free!
Again with the pyramid thing. HES NOT OVERUSED. And Team Silent doesnt just use him because "it caters to the fans". Read my comments on part 1. Also, thats a rather crude comment. People like pyramid head. I dunno why myself, but they do. Doesn't mean you say "AILL COM @ U WIF A PILOH". Another crude comment of the movie. Seriously?
You made allot of WONDERFUL points >.O damn good job! however I disagree about the movie. It truly captured the spirit of silent hill, which no other game to movie adaption has yet done before. It's only and MAJOR downside however was the rapeage of pyramid head and the nurses. They had NO symbolic meaning for being there at all >.e; but I feel if the spirit of the material has been captured, then it's a great accomplishment 8O
It's always the way with a horror franchise, think Saw, Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street. The first one is great and then maybe the trilogy but after that they just either use elements from before in a rehashed or out of context way or become parodic.
My theory on Pyramid Head/Bogeyman being in Silent Hill Homecoming is this. Pyramid Head is a being of torture, unforgivingness, and punishment. In Homecoming, he is basically there to punish Alex's father. To get the Bogeyman ending, you can't stop your mother's pain, you can't forgive your father, and you can't save Wheeler, therefor, you are also a being of punishment, torture, etc. Not that there wasn't any fan catering going on, though.
i would realy like to know why you don't like the sh2 movie,i thought it could of been much better but,it was the best game based movie i'v ever seen.
@aaron75fy The Red God in general, or the idea that it could be PH? I didn't make the connection until I read Silent Pyramid's FAQ, but I remembered it from the SH3 soundtrack.
If I may ask, what is your favorite video game, if that is you have one? Now if you answer in this video or in 4b I'm very sorry, I tend to comment as I watch the videos.
totally agree with you about pyramid head. He is really cool and stuff but please dont use him over and over again for no reason at all. The nurses are different I think they are like moogles or chocobos but thats a different story. In SH2 the reason for his appearence is to punish James. thats why he kills maria several times... to remind james of what he has done (at least thats what I heard) and there is no reason why he would appear in Homecoming or the movie so stop it.
I've always wondered what it is about Pyramid head that makes everyone lovehim so much. I mean yes he is an aspect of the protagonist's mind but why would that alone make the character so wanted by the fans?
It's when you first enter the church, the walls on either side are lined with paintings that tell the story behind the cult's religion--the one with the Pyramid Head like figure is the second or third painting.
true, plus i was quite disappointed by the drastic change of controls in homecoming. i'd have prefered the auto aim with firearms to have been left in especially when i was being surrounded
True, but SH3 and 4 are still very imaginative and artistical masterpieces, especially sh4, which showed how the series had potential to do something completelly new while keeping the essence. SH0 and Homecoming, on the other hand, are pretty dry of creativity, altough you can see they actually tried with sh0.
Point is, Konami should had NEVER handed the American developers the rights for that game, they clearly ruined it. After SH4 I've only played Origins which I was disappointed with, same scenario, different main character. The Americans are even KNOWN for ruining famous asian either korean or japanese horror movies, of course they'd fuck up with the SH series... Way to ruin my favorite horror series... bastards... *disappointed, sad, frustrated*
I thought so too and I guess ever hardcore SH fan would agree with you. But actually you cant blame the americans for ruin the series... at least not as much as Konami JPN itself for handing one of their greatest franchise to american developers for only one reason: Money. They gave SH out of their hands because they thought it would become more popular and that was the death sentence of the series. I hope they realize what they have done before its to late and before SH dies completely...
To be honest though, I'd say I'm not thrilled on Silent Horror as a whole. it was the first movie directed by Rory (who plays as Snake in their Metal Gear Solid movie) and even he says Silent Horror isn't that good. I personally would have prefered that they stick with one Silent Hill story line and not try to combine 1, 2, and 3. but most of all what I dont like is that the girl they got in one of the lead roles... can't act!!
I totally agree that Pyramid Head and the sexy looking nurses are way too overused.
and the reason for this... is because of the people in charge of the movie and the most recent games (Origins, Homecoming, and soon to be Shattered Memories) have zero creativity and originality. They use the popular characters as an excuse to pull in fans and I say it's idiotic and wish they would come up with their own ideas for once!
I actually agree with you (yah, the girl was awful), but I still find the movie fun to watch, and it definitely has its moments. And, if nothing else, I still think it's better than the SIlent Hill movie =P
well, if TS did it, they would do it right, as it wont be a fan want. They rehash less characters to begin with, only when it's apropriate and still hate story meaning will they use it.
Pretty much, the painting is very different then what James sees. The robe is way more dirty and we see a lack of flesh tone, which mimicks the desiese Mary had on her body.
here in Europe it wasn't called restless dreams, it was called directors cut, but I don't really know if there was anymore difference besides the name.
The game never gave me the impression that Pyramid Head is actually raping the other monsters...And I love how this one time he looks like he's trying to remove the triangle because it seems to really hurt him.
As far as Christoph Gans destroying the Silent Hill movie, I'd say that that's not exactly true. Gans' directing was masterful with the camera work and atmosphere. Where the Silent Hill movie was RAPED was in the script, written by Roger Avery. The dumb dialogue and watered down story I blame on him.
Tossing in Pyramid Head was fan-service. Hardcore fans would have rioted if he/it was overlooked.
Silent Hill 2 is great all around, but Pyramid Head still 'PWNS'.
wasn't the first time you saw pyramid head in the hotel? early in the game I kind of remember passing through a hall and on the other side I saw a figure, i went back and I saw pyramid head, but he was just standing there, he couldn't reach me, we were divided by a chainlink fence. I can't make it in more detail because it was a long time ago, but if I remember correctly the walls were white and the doors were blue, at least that's what I remember.
it really freaked me out xD more than the other times I met him, I always got more scared when something is there, you see it, expect something to happen but it never does, your mind actually goes places that are more scary than perhaps anything they could make happen in the game. I think the best scare I witnessed, was a friend of mine playing Doom 3, I was watching him and everything was calm for about 3 minutes, suddenly he steps on ammo on the floor and the sound just makes him jump xD
That's the apartment building, not the hotel. As for the SH movie, considering that it is a video game-based movie, I think it's the best one out right now. I mean looking at the Resident Evil and Hitman movies, the Silent Hill movie wasn't so bad. Of course, they could've done a hell of a better job, but what do you expect? If only they'd make good game-movies...ah well. I really hope that these American developers can redeem themselves and bring an ORIGINAL Silent Hill game, one day.
Frankly, I'm a little tired of the "it's not as bad as _____" argument. That's doesn't make it good. And, IMO, as long as we expect little, that's all we're ever going to get, so the "what did you expect?" argument doesn't hold water for me either.
(don't mean to sound snarky--it's nothing personal, I've just heard these same excuses so much that it starts to grate on my nerves after awhile--hence why I said "let's just leave it at that" in the video =P)
Also, as far as good video game-based movies, I consider Mortal Kombat to be the only really good attempt. Sure it's kinda silly and cheesy at times, but the characters and story are recognizable, and it generally has a lot of respect for the source material. It's also beautifully shot.
I also personally like Resident Evil, as far as mindless entertainment goes, but I can understand why fans of the games don't like it--it has a lot of RE elements, but has some missing as well.
lol again I love Pyramid head XD but I really loved silent hill 2 for its depth, horror and because I loved the first so much lol idk why just cant hate pyramid head XD well I cant anyway :3
Well in Thrill Kill, it was the player's goal to kill other characters and build up their 'bloodlust' and 'kill meter'... in Silent Hill, the raping/killing monster is the bad guy. Where Thrill Kill almost condones the bloody violance it contains, Silent Hill uses it to a negative effect; to frighten the player, whose goal is to reach the happy ending. There are major differences here I think. If that answers your question?
damn. to be honest i always avoided these games cause i figured they were a cheap resident evil clone. now i see that was a hideous mistake on my part. thanks cyborcat, for introducing me to the next series of games i intend to buy and play the hell outta
Yah, I had similar thoughts when I first heard about the original Silent Hill, but fortunately a friend of mine made me play it ... and the rest is history =P
Its a part of the towns history so it must be brought back, besides its the same theory as having a resident evil game without zombies. consistency is important. He doenst need to be in every game but he does need to be reoccuring.
RE4 & 5 don't have zombies, and many say that they are the best games in the series.
Besides it isn't just Pyramid Head, it's all the mosters being overused for no reason. Where as everything in SH2 meant something, the same cannot be said for the movie, Origins & Homecoming. it shows a lack of creativity and imagination on the developers part. More than likely Shattered Memories will be playing by ear as well.
any1 who says RE 5 is the best in the series..is delusional. besides RE is not what it used to be. It has evolved into something the likes of Gears of War.
the nurses are a signature to the silent hill series, their a familar element that represent the theme, theyre not over used.
Yeah, SH movie was mostly effects. Right now I am thinking if it could be better if it had A LOT less characters. An average SH game has like what? 3-8 characters? The movie had like 60.
Eh, it's nothing special, IMO. All it had going for it was good special effects. The story sucked. Movies like that are a dime a dozen, and Silent Hill deserved better treatment.
well, I'm glad I didn't say anything about wanting you to talk about pyramid head in a previous video, but it's not because I think he's superawsome1337pwnage, I just wanted to know more about him
thank you very much for explaining the story and charakters. sometimes i had problems figuring out why everyting was how it was (two pyramid heads, for example)
The SH3 variant (known as Valtiel) was my favorite of the "unkillable monster" types, mostly because like the rest of SH3, it freaked me right the hell out.
There's a LOT of stuff in SH3 that can't touch you, but is still really creepy. It's one of the cool things about that game--it definitely makes full use of atmosphere and visuals in general.
My favorite out of the three, I think, is Walter Sullivan--they didn't do as much with him as they could have, but it was a great concept, IMO.
PH is to Walter as Jason is to Freddy. One is a walking force of nature that appears humanoid, while the other is a remarkably powerful individual that retains the memories and personality of its former self.
I think I said something about them flaming me or something--that hasn't happened yet.
This bit is sort of funny in a way, because I got exactly the same reaction for the Silent Hill review I did for Still Gaming--lots of people saying "I liked the movie" (or "it's not snow, it's ash!") and nothing more.
It's kind of annoying to spend months on a long video only to have some people argue with one sentence you said, as if that's all they remember from it.
I do agree with you about the Silent Hill movie sucking though, and Christoph Gans deserving to be drug out into the street and shot (metaphorically, not literally). To it's credit though, the movie does do a pretty good job of maintaining the tone and pacing of the first and third games.

Pyramide head gives a whole new meaning to fucking someone up.

Anytime I hear someone say, "I love Silent Hill 2 because Pyramid Head pawns!" I just wanna go after them with a pillow!
...Or maybe a gigantic, unwieldy knife-sword that can only be swung very slowly in one direction? LOL! XD
Thanks for putting this whole thing up, it was a great review, time well-spent in viewing. :-)

I feel your wrong about pyramid head.
Its a part of the towns history so it must be brought back, besides its the same theory as having a resident evil game without zombies. consistency is important. He doenst need to be in every game but he does need to be reoccuring.
essej 2 years ago
RE4 & 5 don't have zombies, and many say that they are the best games in the series.
Besides it isn't just Pyramid Head, it's all the mosters being overused for no reason. Where as everything in SH2 meant something, the same cannot be said for the movie, Origins & Homecoming. it shows a lack of creativity and imagination on the developers part. More than likely Shattered Memories will be playing by ear as well.
AlucardsQuest 2 years ago
any1 who says RE 5 is the best in the series..is delusional. besides RE is not what it used to be. It has evolved into something the likes of Gears of War.
the nurses are a signature to the silent hill series, their a familar element that represent the theme, theyre not over used.

The slient hill movie nailed everything except the story, the MAIN part
Wakesay 2 years ago
The movie was really lame, I mean Harry had a sex change and Cheryl got her name changed to Sharon. They couldn't even leave those elements alone?

Yeah, SH movie was mostly effects. Right now I am thinking if it could be better if it had A LOT less characters. An average SH game has like what? 3-8 characters? The movie had like 60.

Oh Godz, there's like 2-3 versions of each monster!

oh! So that's the Silent Hill 3 thing people say PH was chronologically based off of o.o

I understand on how you feel about the movie but still I think it was actually somewhat decent I mean for the most part it was actually good.
ChibiFighter 2 years ago
Eh, it's nothing special, IMO. All it had going for it was good special effects. The story sucked. Movies like that are a dime a dozen, and Silent Hill deserved better treatment.

I'm sorry, but Mr. head's my fav character.

very intertaining, like 3 other parts, and a lot of your other videos! ;)

well, I'm glad I didn't say anything about wanting you to talk about pyramid head in a previous video, but it's not because I think he's superawsome1337pwnage, I just wanted to know more about him

thank you very much for explaining the story and charakters. sometimes i had problems figuring out why everyting was how it was (two pyramid heads, for example)

The SH3 variant (known as Valtiel) was my favorite of the "unkillable monster" types, mostly because like the rest of SH3, it freaked me right the hell out.
jamesbondgeek1 2 years ago
There's a LOT of stuff in SH3 that can't touch you, but is still really creepy. It's one of the cool things about that game--it definitely makes full use of atmosphere and visuals in general.
My favorite out of the three, I think, is Walter Sullivan--they didn't do as much with him as they could have, but it was a great concept, IMO.
Cyborcat 2 years ago
PH is to Walter as Jason is to Freddy. One is a walking force of nature that appears humanoid, while the other is a remarkably powerful individual that retains the memories and personality of its former self.
jamesbondgeek1 2 years ago
I like silent hill 2,but pyramid head was just a small chunk of the frosting.
Seriously though, new monsters would be shizzy-shweet.

Now I get to watch ten thousand people mention that they liked the movie, as if it's going to change my opinion.
Cyborcat 2 years ago
*sigh* Just as you told me they would. -_-
SpecterVonBaren 2 years ago
I think I said something about them flaming me or something--that hasn't happened yet.
This bit is sort of funny in a way, because I got exactly the same reaction for the Silent Hill review I did for Still Gaming--lots of people saying "I liked the movie" (or "it's not snow, it's ash!") and nothing more.
It's kind of annoying to spend months on a long video only to have some people argue with one sentence you said, as if that's all they remember from it.
Trying to focus on the humor of it tho
Cyborcat 2 years ago
I agree.
That movie was GOD AWFUL.
