  • Larry i love you ! Lol

I discovered him trough Steely dan records. Thanks to them for ever.

  • The Skunk is right there. What really brought Steely Dan to the forefront? For me it was the instrumentals and more so the quitarists through out there history. The Skunk and Denny were the best team.

  • still fresh after all of this time, even the Steely Dan rips... love this guy, truly one of the masters!

  • what guitar is he playing?

  • Valley Arts custom

  • could watch this guy play his guitar all day,,he's the reason i started playn guitar on ya LAZZA !!!!!!!!!!

  • Larry is hands down the best guitarist of all time. He does things with his quick hands and brilliant sense of melody and staggering technical skill that no other guitarist can or could do. Larry is just on another level. Also, he was shot and almost killed a year after this concert was made. Makes him all the more awesome that he could get through that and still take the time to talk to humble hardcore fans like me. Very cool guy in person, signed my old records that I kept.

  • AH MEN BROTHA!!

except, i would have to say that petrucci is definitely on par with Larry

  • Trust me, Pettruci is nowhere near on par with Carlton. Nowhere NEAR.

  • @SessionSavant Dark eternal night...

  • @SessionSavant Oh god... comparing again...

  • bullshits.

  • this guy is fantastic , can make a guitar really sing

  • haha, 100,000 views!!

  • OK, so what do we have here?...

Hill Street Blues; Kid Charlemagne; Don't Take Me Alive; Put It Where You Want It... Have I missed anything?...

LC is masterful guitarist who ranks at or near the top of tasteful, jazz-infused blues players. Is he a nice guy?... Maybe, maybe not...

I would note that the painter Carravagio was a brawler and a murderer, but we do not judge the art based on the personal pecadillos of the man, n'est pas?

  • Apart from the obvious (songs from his famous solos) I fail to understand this "nice guy" thing. I can only assume it's a "half story intrigue" comment. If so then spill the beans and take it from there.

  • Love this guy, his playing and his style. Great to hear a bit of "don't take me alive" mixed in there. Saw him at The Talkhouse a few years ago, just great.

  • Paul Simon of guitar...

  • Larry is indeed the most tasteful guitarist on the planet.

  • You understand nothing. Don't denigrate Larry Carlton by your obscene presence and fake accounts Halcomb.

  • Some people should be shot at birth. Larry Carlton is a lovely man and scum like LarryGovan aka Tim Halcomb have to post their rubbish. Shame.

  • My my Larry ...Guthrie would not use that kind of language. No respect for Larry Carlton now then.

  • Larry you are Tim fucking Halcomb you schizo cunt and that's "whomever". Jesus you're so illiterate you redneck cunt.

  • Phil Keaggy ...wannabe? Dim witted empty headed prick.

What do you think LarryGovan? ...well expertATmusic I think Tim Halcomb fucks donkeys what do you think? Hmmm you might be right there Larry. He does smell of fishy manure. He also does not know who Phil Keaggy is. Yes Larry I know. Halcomb thinks he's the best but his videos suck.

  • Hulldanfan.

Do you have the Town to Town Album(dvd) or The Master and the Muscian? by Phil Keaggy? His earlier guitar work sounds similar to This guy.

  • reminds me of the Hillstreet Blues tv theme!! ha

  • Thats because it is !!!!

  • This guy reminds me of phil keaggy

  • Why ???

    Playing styles are different.

I have 20 Keaggy albums and he doesnt play any smooth jazz on any of them !!

  • "Kid..."=the most melodic and ingenious solo I've ever heard.

  • Agreed

  • why can I not indent comments ? Why do they always appear at the top ?

  • It was so inspiring.

  • What's the name of the song that he played from the beginning till 1:10?

  • Kid Charlemagne

  • I think it's the theme song to "Hill Street Blues." A cop show from the 80's. I didn't know that he wrote that. I love all the Steely Dan stuff. One of the COOLEST guitarists ever.

  • I must've had an amnesia for more than a decade. I kept thinking to myself that sounded familiar. I've finally found the song. And thank you for that.

  • Larry didn't write the theme, he just played guitar on it. It was actually written by Mike Post.

  • Genious.

    His tone is amazing.

  • Yeah man of course his tone is amazing, amazing player + valley arts guitar pre samick pre gibson, i have one and that is a rolls royce of guitars.

  • Shhhh Tim. Let me jerk you off:-)

  • well we should all understand something about Larry, when he performs, he's telling a story. A WELL written one and that's exactly why he's often called "THE STORY TELLER!" And, he can play fast, check out some of his performances with the band "FOREPLAY" :-)

  • No he's not. He's called Mr 335 so you're full of shit.........again

  • Nah you're thinking about a story of foreplay with some farmyard thing.

  • This video is amazing! Oh my God. If you listen carefully, you will hear solos from two STEELY DAN songs. I never knew Larry Carlton did those solos. God bless you Larry. And...stefflinn, thank you for posting this video. It is rare, precious and priceless.

  • For those who want to know, valley arts guitar is owned by the Gibson guitar corporation. If you're a serious guitar player, buy a valley arts guitar.

  • Also, after having been shot in the throat in a hapless robbery in his own 'room 335' studio, he was able to return to his album "on solid ground" which is nothing short of brilliant. He plays with a custom guitar made by a music shop in California called "Valley Arts." I've been there, and Larry is held in very high esteem. Just take a close look at his guitar and you'll see the valley arts signature.

  • Hi Mr. burnettvicefan. I'm a Miami Vice fan too. Those shows were great. I miss them.

Larry Carlton was shot in his driveway. I remember that day. I was watching the 700 Club and his wife Michelle called for prayer for Larry. PRAISE GOD, Larry lived and is still one of the best, finest guitar players ever. Everyone loves and respects Larry Carlton. Look at all the people he plays with. He's the guitar player for FOURPLAY too!!

Check out his YOUTUBE channel. GOD BLESS YOU.

  • hi about larry being shot i recently posted on another video room 335 that larry was shot outside a club in L A .i must be wrong thanks for the update.!

  • There is no one better, guitar player of course, in the world in sheer form, skill, and technique than Larry Carlton. He does things with the guitar that are impossible for anyone else in the world, including greats like Eric Clapton and Santana. Nothing Special? You don't know shit from shinola. He's the most comprehensive studio musician guitarist period, working with hundreds of different artists.

  • Nothing special.

  • WTF are you on about...."Nothing special". Learn the history of some of these famous solos. And you are supposed to be a Jazz musician??????

  • His solos are some of my favorite, but I've never seen him do anything live that has impressed me.

  • Check Emotions Wound Us So vid on here - the live one (from his Instructional video as it happens). I'm a fan of guitar playing from Vai to Clapton, Scott Henderson to Al Di Meola and the new (ish) breed of guys like John Petrucci as well as MANY others but Larry Carlton is a master of dynamics and subtlety.

  • impress you ? what are you looking for ? super fast sweeping and tapping ? - I think guitar and the people who play it, is one of the only instruments where people need to be "impressed"... Larry is much more than a guitarist... he is a musician! - and a great legendary one. I suggest you try and learn to appreciate what hes doing as it seems you have missed the point entirely.

  • Hill St. Blues?Sounds familiar.

  • lol

  • hahaha

  • Larry Carlton is an amazing guitarist, along with Metheny and Holdsworth one of my favorites

  • Larry was "the man apart" in the past, he is "the man apart now," and he will continue to be "the man apart" in the future. Now get with what REAL music is! It's an ART not a RACE! Some people think you have to always play fast to be good. That's bullshit! I can get tired of that real quick. However, I NEVER get tired of Larry Carlton's guitar playing because he can play anyway he wants and definitely put ART to everything he does. HE IS THE VERY BEST ALIVE!

  • agreed wit you man...i

ll take larry over steve vai or anytime!

  • To the owner of this guitarttimman aka Tim Halcomb has been barred from Guthrie Govans channels for posting rubbish and now he's doing it here. Stalkers my arse. How many accounts have you got nobhead? I see you're a welder now LOL

  • Larry Carlton RULES! and, to the owner of this, peace! and please don't confuse me with my stalkers. Click my name here and visit me, and you'll see that I'm only here to encourage Larry's music because he is my FAVORITE guitarist. Thank you :-)

  • Love the kid charlamagne solo. By the way, after reading through some of these posts I'm reminded of a joke:

How many lead guitarists does it take to change a light bulb??

20 - one to change it and 19 to say "I could have done it better" ......

Steve Lukather's sensai ... and mine too

  • Fuck you billmeedog okay, you think I was disrespecting the man, but you're actually incorrect. What I have been trying to do is prove a point. Technical playing is great and definitely should be appreciate, however, it DOES NOT make one a better "ARTIST." And, if all guitarists played one way, I would totally STOP listening to all music! Instead of comparing guitarists, we should learn to appreciate people for the ART of what they can create. I see too much arogance in this field! WAY TOO MUCH!

  • BTW, thanks for this LC vid! Also, you were DEAD-ON about Lukather reminding you of Carlton, as they are buddies, and LC was a huge influence on Luke. Also, back in the mid/late 70's (early "Toto" days) LC hooked him up with a BUNCH of studio gigs in the "L.A. Studio Scene." In fact, from 1976 - 1988, Steve Lukather played on a SHITLOAD of hit records. (Not enough room here, but Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Chicago, The Tubes, and Don Henley are just a FEW!) Peace!

  • Here's guitarttimmans report card

    1. Clarity = shit

    2. Musical Feel = none whatsoever

    3. Ease of trasition to other keys = not a clue

    Yes Tim Halcomb sucks.

  • well, English Boy, say what you want and drink your tea, but when it comes to guitar, on you I take a pee. I'm smarter and faster with light years more skill. And musically minded, I have a million times more feel. So keep pretending to be like Guthrie, or Larry, when in fact, your playing is really quite scary :-(

  • What TimboGMS?, I hope you're not talking about Larry?

  • Woops sorry folks, I should have read further, wasn't trying to butt into arguments etc., for the friends I sent this too I think I also recognize the "Hill Street Blues" theme in there too as well as Steely Dan.. :)

  • M, remind me NOT to get into a pissing match with these guys! (lol!) I don't think my skins thick enough. Ha-ha! Funny stuff! IMO, there isn't much that Steely Dan has done that isn't GREAT! I'm not a big Skunk Baxter fan, but I think most of their other "hired-guns" kick ass! I just saw The Making of the "AjA" LP last week, and it was SO COOL!

Becker & Fagen commenting on their own work is PRICELESS! Plenty of dry, self-depracating "geeky" humor to go around!!! Check it out, if you haven't.

  • The making of AJA is amazing but also is the comments from the session boys. I think Denny Diaz hits the nail on the head where he says they both think as one. The "fart jokes" comment I still laugh at. Carlton probably did the best job of all trying to deal with 5 crews of different musicians a day such was the ruthlessness of Becker and Fagen for perfection.

    Actually my favourite album.

  • This in response to billmeedog of a year ago...Just remember that Skunk Baxter penned the solos on "My Old School" one of the most original and innovative pieces of guitar playing ever, and probably his great moment of genius. The Dan boys are just brilliant at choosing the right man for the job.The new guys are great too, particularly Wayne Krantz who carries on the SD tradition of never doing the conventional.

  • Here's Larry's report card:

    1. Clarity = Grade A+

    2. Musical Feel = Grade A+

    3. Ease of trasition to other keys = Grade A+

Yes, Larry graduates with honors :-)

  • tone = a+

    note bending = a+

    phrasing = a+

    note choice = a+

ability to self edit and not OVERplay = a+

    lyrical quality = a+

    ...

  • Here's Tim Halcomb's report card:

    1. Clarity = Grade unclassified

    2. Musical Feel = Grade unclassified

    3. Ease of transition to other keys = he can't do that

    4. Porking females = he can't get an erection

    5. Donkey Shagging = A********

    6. Gay romps = A*******

    7. Full of Shit Factor = A******

  • i love this youtube argument, it's so musically knowledgeable

  • okay, here's the truth. Guthrie Govan is a prodigy in his own right. Also, he's a master technician! But, music isn't just about being technical. It's about feel, texture, and, most importantly, STYLE. Larry Carlton has a unique style and even to this day I haven't seen anyone do it justice. Guthrie also is phenomenal. But, let's just leave it as that. They are both very different, and extremely talented. :-)

  • O.K. Larry carlton fans, i believe Larry did the solo for Josie on steely dans aja (correct me if i'm wrong). Now i put it to you that it is a shit solo that doesn't benifit or work with the song at all. Am I rigt or am i wrong?

  • It was Jay Graydon. LC had a huge involvement in the album as well as some playing but his solo may have been rejected along with many others. LC also did many charts on the album. A good question about the solo. Becker and Fagen liked it and they are perfectionists. These days Becker and/or Herington play totally different solos. I'm on the fence - always have been about the solo. All I can say is that I prefer many other SD solos.

  • Hi

We originally wanted Tim Halcombe to play on this track. He played his solo but it was real bad man. Horrible sound, no feel, just a jumble of badly played jazz cliches. We kept it though and play it to people now again for some light humor. He also smelled of manure.

  • well credo, does it matter that you're on the fence over a solo that has made Larry millions? Now stop and think a second about what you're typing here. Larry is GREAT! his solos are GREAT! end of story :-)

  • Just as stupid as ever. JAY GRAYDON was the featured soloist on Josie not LC. LC did the charts on Josie. So now what have you got to say? Nothing I hope you half guitarist.

  • okay then credo, if you're so smart, then answer these questions: If Jay Graydon made the original, then why did Larry Carlton get so much recognition for it? And, if Larry "stole" the idea, then why didn't Jay Graydon take Larry into court? :-)

  • Graydon was the soloist - look it up you ignoranamus. Carlton didn't take any recognition - you're confusing this song with another. Carlton did the charts. Becker and Fagen own the song. Carlton didn't steal Josie - he copied Peg. Now stop arguing about things that are over your head or argue with Cedric on the other channel

  • okay, let me do some deducing here:

    1. The intro to PEG has a completely different voicing of chords than 335's intro.

    2. The Theme of 335 has an "extra" three chords as compared to PEG.

    3. The Bridge of PEG is "PEG IT WILL COME BACK TO YOU" which would be F#Minor#9, Cmajor7, Bminor#9. The bridge of 335 has TEN chord changes with EIGHT repeated before returning to the THEME. The only simulairties is the "Beat" and with ONLY TWO comparable chords. SO YOU ARE WRONG! LIVE WITH IT CREDO BOY!

  • Wrong. Bridge:

    Db, Fm, Bbm7, F7

You can't get anything right dickfuck

  • What are you on about? We're talking about Josie not Peg dummy. Why have you started another argument over something that's got nothing to do with Josie? JOSIE. Carlton wasn't the featured guitarist on JOSIE. Now fuckoff.

btw I see you've exposed your music limitations again. Tosser.

  • well credo, I didn't show "EVERY" chord. That and the voicing patterns it takes too long. And, I can play either song impeccably. Shall I prove it with a video? Anyway, Larry is a master guitarist. Jay is good too. But, Larry is the REAL MAN-APART so now go cry to your Queen, or, Prince Charles is it? LOL

  • I don't care what you can play. You're a cock.

  • lol

  • wrong......you must understand what the song is about, to understand the guitar performance there....so, its back to class, for you.

  • 1. Smoothness

    2. Well Structured musically

    3. Performed uniquely and at the highest level.

Larry Wins over ALL other guitarist and that includes Guthrie Govan, Marco Sfogli, etc.

LARRY IS THE BETTER GUITARIST :-)

  • nope, he doesn't beat govan. still excellent though.

  • THAT WAS A DUMB STATEMENT "BeyondTheGates87." Larry Carlton has a different style. Larry DOES Beat Guthrie in "his" own style. And Guthrie for his, but it's stupid to even compare the two because they have different styles. Personally, I think Larry is better in one way: "HE IS MILLIONS OF TIMES SMOOTHER." :-)

  • okay, I was pissed off. I like Guthrie.

I admit this, before I seen Guthrie, there just wasn't anyone who I liked as much as Larry. But disrespecting Larry is just plain stupid. And "comparing" another person to him is also dumb. Larry has a "signature" style that will never be forgotten. Two very different styles from two very great players should not even be compared anyway. And that's my "REAL" call on this issue.

  • ummm, shut the fuck up. govan is lightyears ahead of this guy. end of fucking story.

  • Whoever criticizes Larry's playing needs to be slapped around the head with a large piece of tuna fish.

  • whoever criticizes larry's playing needs to think twice, his vocabulary knowledge, versility and phrasing is far beyond the quality of any technical wanker. certanly one of the best guitarists around, long live fusion

  • dumble over drive special. and valley arts strat. nice!

  • Take your comments elsewhere.

  • Tims my cat by the way.

  • I love you Tim. Come back to me.

  • Yeah DonkeyKing you come on here and ABUSE ME. You know I'M as good as anyone else in the WORLD ROTFL:-)

  • I'm sorry guitarttimman I woz wrong. U can hang with Larry any day. U can pick with ur fingers, pick with a pick, hybrid pick, tap pick, slide pick and pick the cheese off ur stump. Ur the best guitarttimman - HOW ABOUT NOT...!!!! ROTFLMCO :-)

  • I can play real good. I KNOW PENTATONIC scales AND STUFF and my FEEL is as good as Larrys. Larry is great and SO AM I. Show me the respect I DESERVE:-)

  • Larry Carlton...'the guitarist's guitarist!

    Simply the best!

  • I agree with you George :-)

  • Apart from me of course. Larrys good but check me out ..search guitarttimman. Im good man.

  • oh look, the clone is back.

    check the spellings here.

    I am g-u-i-t-a-r-t-t-i-m-a-n

    the clone: g-u-i-i etc.

And, NO I do not compare myself to Larry.

    I'm a #1 FAN of Larry's. I look up to the guy :-)

  • No you're not. You're evil and intent on destroying channels. Block this guy like all the Guthrie Govan channels have. BLOCK HIM.

  • I would NEVER disrespect Larry Carlton. Not now or any other time in my life. Larry has the BEST style of playing I've ever heard. There isn't a guitarist alive who can duplicate what he has done (FACT) :-)

  • I can play just like Larry but you and YOUR friends dont show ME RESPECT. I can play Room 335 as good.

  • look at the spelling and check the account difference! I am guitarttimman; whereas, the loser clone is using the "fake" name guitarrtimman. I don't type stupid insults. The purpose of this channel is to appreciate Larry Carlton. Let's do that! Larry is still the GREATEST guitarist alive :-)

  • You've totally messed up Guthrie Govan's channel and now you want to destroy Larry Carlton's videos. In fact it was that bad that Blues Jam Tracks have blocked you for life. Watch out for his alter-ego accounts also.

  • look at the spelling! that's not me. I am NOT gay, but those loser stalkers are real flamers and jealous of my guitar playing :-)

  • I'm not gay, and only a real gay would clone someone's name! Stop it you friggin' flamer. And, was it your dad or your uncle who messed you up?

  • Look I'm not gay. I wear womens clothes thats all.

  • Arguably two of the best guitar solos ever performed...."Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive" and by the man who made 'em famous.

  • Larry Carlton! Awesome tone, style, and playing :-)

  • No ...he was ...The Goat of Mendes!

  • Your father was a bunch of US Army grunts man.

  • Ladies and Gents, introducing Mr. Larry Carlton. My Father! LOL

  • Hey graham, just listen to the "tone" and the "smooth" in Larry's Guitar Sound. GREAT!

What if GG got the same setup? I'd be buying GG's music that's the answer. I ALREADY have bought many of LC's music. I have 335, Strikes Twice, Last Nite, Kid Gloves, etc. :-)

  • Larry has got the lot and has played on more than 7 thousand tracks for other artists. That is how high he is held by his fellow professional musicians. He is the best of the best

  • you are absolutely correct graham. Larry is the best in my opinion too :-)

  • If you notice, I haven't criticisized "Larry" not even once. Well, the fact is, "how could I he's better than me" LOL

  • Did he do HILL STREET BLUES?

  • Yes and Barney Miller too!

  • dave grusin wrote

  • Sorry but Mike Post wrote Hill Street Blues which featured the Great Larry Carlton on Guitar

  • Well Folks, you have to consider something here, Larry has even performed with great masters like Chat Atkins, and, Larry "invented" this style of music right here and he is "still" my favorite guitarist!

  • more more not long enough !!!!! he is the master !!! he's steely dan stuff is just amazing !!!! third world man !!!

  • the drummer here is also very talented!

  • I love all of it, but my favorite guitar part starts at 1:13 and ends at 2:36

  • This goes against the grain Tali but I agree. Kid Charlamagne is the greatest solo ever. Hill Street Blues, 2 times Dan and finishing with the Crusaders. Far too short and shame Spiral wasn't included but otherwise totally brilliant

  • well blaster, my right. But, what pisses me off about your site is not that GG is good. He's good I admit. But, he's NOT the "greatest" guitarist in the "world." My cousin, even though not discovered, is just as good for his style, and it really is sad that people can be brain washed and not recognize someone of such talent. Audiences determine greatness and "NOT" biased judges. I've even heard of contests where Larry SO-Called "lost" but look at him now! Judges can be Biased!

  • GG is not the greatest in my opinion - Larry Carlton is - PERIOD but that is my opinion

  • Why is GG?

  • GG is Guthrie Govan. Check him out on Youtube and be amazed

  • Ah, I know of Guthrie. I never liked him for some reason, he just sounded stiff and lacked personality in his playing.

  • ?????? I just dont understand that statement.

  • oh no flukather you have BLASPHEMED blaster and krelbar's GOD. ha ha ha ha

  • well I for one have ALWAYS supported EVERYTHING Larry has played AND YES I DO LOVE HIS WEST COAST SOUND! And do I think Robben Ford sounds like him? No I don't. Robben is great but I like Larry even better!

  • This is why Larry's on so many peoples albums! One of a kind, for sure!

  • He's amazing, one of my favourite players, btw, anyone knows where the gig was recorded?

  • No matter what the song, you must admit, Larry does sound great!

  • Great Steely Dan song.

  • Larry is the best bassist i have ever seen. And the song is the theme from 'DALLAS'

  • WHHHAAAAA ????? BASSIST ??? ARE YOU NUTS OR BLIND, Or Both ? Larry is the GUITARIST, you MORON !

  • The Bassist in this clip, in John Pena ! Get your facts right...

  • nice valley arts giutar! sounds so deep and crisp!

  • fantastic. I've been a LC fan for years and never seen him play - only just occurred to me to check out youtube....glad I did

can I get the whole video anywhere?

  • Hey Grannis ! You can get it on video tape...I have it myself... that's why I can comment...but it might be on DVD by now....the Name of it is Larry Carlton LIVE. Its on MCA Music Video Tape. If you wanna search it out, the catalog number, I believe is MCAV-88002... ( that's what's on the carton )..So check it out, you'll have fun watching the entire concert. I did !

  • kid charlemange - steely dan

  • No DL, you're incorrect, the first one is Hill Street Blues, like Firstube said..

  • hooo thank you very much. iv been listng that in the radio 20yrs ago. ive been copying it on the piano but i cant complete i didnt know the title. thank you firstube.

  • whats the title of this first song . i love this song but dont know the title

  • it's the theme to the 80s tv show "Hill Street Blues"

  • kid charlemange - steely dan

  • Its amazing how one or two notes played with touch and feeling can make such a difference to the thrill of listening - Larry Carlton does it!!

  • ... and then there is this.

  • How identifiable is the playing of Larry Carlton?? Some of the greatest ever.

  • yes its a valley arts guitar...

  • this is a valley arts guitar

  • So cool to see a genius at work...

  • Larry is a great jazz player. It anyone can get a copy of "Storyteller" which sounds very much like and Acoustic track (but you can never tell with LC) Have a listen.. It's pure genius.

  • From "Fingerprints" album featuring Kirk Walum on sax.

  • i dunno guys larry could prolly show clapton whats up ya dig

  • Clapton tends to approach things for a more "off the cuff" blues fell. Carleton gets inside the chord changes and comes up with such interesting melodies

  • Larry and Eric have two different styles. Larry's playing is more advanced that's true, but Eric is good for what he does. I don't think Larry and Eric should even do a show together because they have COMPLETELY different styles! I like them both, but Larry is my favorite!
