  • Update to KDE 4.8.0 and it will work great! Kubuntu is much better than Ubuntu. And it really looks like an operating system for PC. Now Ubuntu looks like it's made for phones or tablets. Try something real if you're using a computer :))

  • for some reason kununtu runs faster then xubuntu and ubuntu.(go figure) it has always worked for me no problems. system specs: dell dimension 4600 2.7ghz 768mb ram. xubuntu takes 2-3 times longer to do anything and ubuntu just doesn't run good at all. i've been using ubuntu and it's variations for about 4 years now because i just despise windows just my preference windows is fine for anyone just not me. my overall thought of Kubuntu 11.10 is easy to use and looks beautiful. i give it 9 out of 10

  • I might be mistaken but I think the "cautious upgrade" option might be the same as "aptitude safe-upgrade"

"The difference between "safe-upgrade"/"upgrade" and "full-upgrade"/"dist-upgrade" only appears when new versions of packages stand in different dependency relationships from old versions of those packages. The "aptitude safe-upgrade" command does not install new packages nor remove installed packages"

  • Now review Linux Mint KDE version 11.10.

  • People who are using kubuntu by virtualbox and having problems with muon... try to install synaptic.. and them reinstall muon

to install synaptic by terminal write:

    sudo apt-get install synaptic

    good luck!

  • 4.7.4 is bug free and the perfect desktop environment

  • @thowd11

really? try renaming an icon or file in a folderview widget on the deskop or even an icon on the desktop without a folderview then say that :P

  • @Linux4UnMe

m computer doesn't seem have a problem doing that

  • @Linux4UnMe

are you using 32 or 64bit?

  • @Linux4UnMe I think KDE is alright but its not for me. I am either a unity or soon to be cinnamon user. Unity is alright for me as I'm never on the desktop, well not that much. As for Cinnamon, I think its the Gnome classic replacement we ahve been waiting for

  • @Linux4UnMe I tried this and I had no problem to do it.

  • @Ray0X0

on 4.7.4? I would like to see that... make a video demonstrating it.... Mint12kde disabled the ability to rename files on the desktop because of this bug... and kde 4.8 fixed the issue

  • @Linux4UnMe See this > watch?v=hGjGoKA0nvM

It's my computer with KDE 4.7.4

  • @chilenoHDU

    you set it to private

  • @Linux4UnMe Sorry, now only you can see it..

  • @chilenoHDU

    scrap that... works now....

  • @Linux4UnMe Simple, just put a note on your video explaining latest changes on the dektop. KDE 4.7.4 is bug free about this.

  • @chilenoHDU

only just watched it.... what distro is it?

  • @Linux4UnMe It is Kubuntu 11.10, of course.. Hey! I will not make a new video only to demonstrate that was Kubuntu 11.10 ok?. :D

  • @chilenoHDU

then they must of fixed it "kubuntu or kde" with an update.... recently.... during the time of this video it was still an issue.... but i acknowledge it is fixed in kde 4.8

  • Comment removed

  • I Install 64bits & it's awesome

  • does it accepts more than 8 ram

  • @monkeh88 Sure, ALOT more than 8gb. Just install 64 bit version.

  • Linux Mint KDE or Kubuntu?

  • @TheUserUndefined

    Kubuntu

  • @Linux4UnMe Why? Sorry I'm just curious what advantages Kubuntu has over Mint...

  • @TheUserUndefined

mint is based on kubuntu... might aswell have the original... only difference is mint has a different application set by default and different theme. nuff said

  • @TheUserUndefined I don't see a huge difference. They are both KDE/Debian based distros. I guess it depends if you want to be minty or not.

  • @buckeyered80

    lol minty

  • there is many programs on windows needs to be on ubuntu or kubuntu like photoshop sony vegas fruityloops creative drivers

  • @monkeh88 wine ?

  • @utki17 ty

  • can u play gta on kubuntu

  • @monkeh88

i've tried san andreas in wine on ubuntu/kubuntu and it runs perfect.... as for other versions of gta I am not sure

  • @Linux4UnMe oh cool, but how do you install nvidia drivers :( i think its hard

  • I'm currently typing this from my Kubuntu-installed desktop computer. I do get some brief visual glitches that I've not gotten with other distros on this computer, but overall, I really like it. I too used to wonder what the Folder View's function was. I don't really use it, personally.

RE: Branding: I actually like the fact that the desktop is more "vanilla", rather than branding it. I put different icons and papers anyways, so it's no biggie.

  • In Fedora 16 the folder view worked by default. It's a little weird on Kubuntu.

  • It isn't KDE being a resource hog, it is the poorly coded Ubuntu kernel loading every daemon and your mom. I really wish people would quit blaming KDE for Kubuntu's mishaps...

  • Great review!

My question would be, can I get my old Ati 9800SE working properly on a newer ubuntu based system, like Kubuntu 11.10? The Ati legacy driver supports up to ubuntu 9.04 only. What should I do?

  • M. Shinoda wtf!

  • @gingerkid963

    more so on Kubuntu

  • just installed this as my main system

  • i do love ur accent

  • Well this is one of the best distro i have used . its even better then ubuntu in unity and gnome 3. I just love this peace of art.

  • I have been using KDE for about 5 years now. The main thing I'd like to see them change in the future is to get away from the ribbon look, which is too similar to Windows. I think the whole Start menu, ribbon thing is outdated. Soon we should be seeing even Windows moving away from it.

  • @buckeyered80

kde are moving to touch soon too apparently... be interesting to see what they do, although I don't know if this will effect Kde by default or not

  • @Linux4UnMe

I hope not, for me gnome shell is a disaster for a desktop UI

  • @Linux4UnMe New "Kickoff-launcher" or menu for KDE is coming? Thats great.

  • @buckeyered80 they already are moving away from it (windows 8)

  • @HoID1 Maybe so...I haven't really reviewed Windows 8 much. Windows is just so boring to me. Ha ha. Sorry to offend any die-hard Windows fans.

  • @buckeyered80 Use gnome, mate, though gnome 3 sucks(looks like shit). Anyway gnome shell is Ok

  • @khajvah1 Gnome 3 is all right. I tried Unity for a bit too. KDE seems to have better working and more stable apps than Gnome. Unity lets you install both KDE and Gnome apps, but it's too buggy right now. Right now I still think KDE is the best. Just want them to change their start menu.

  • @buckeyered80 Well, i hate unity. I hated it since 11.04 and plus too buggy( in fact, sometimes it stops working).KDE is really nice, i like everything in it. I just have question. Have you ever used open suse? I am planning switching to open suse, because people say it is less buggy than kubuntu. What do you think?

  • @khajvah1 Yeah I used OpenSuse for a while. I liked it, but it had issues with my ATI radeon HD card back then. So that was when I had switched to Kubuntu. Otherwise, it was a great distro.

  • What video recording software are you using to do your video?

  • @boggs2005

ffmpeg in the terminal. I have a video tutorial on it somehwere in my channel. Just look for "screencast" in my search

  • @Linux4UnMe Thanks.

  • I cant stand the look of it. I like a bit more different.

  • @Pistenraupe91

    lol. all good. cheers :D

  • @Linux5UnMe Mine runs perfectly on a 1,6 ghz singlecore with 1gb RAM, with Effects like Cube etc

  • Dayum, it still gives that error @ 3:12 ??

On 11.04 it was throwing that error whilst using Kpackage too.

11.04 was buggier than my prior Kubuntu (9.04) overall. I haven't used 11.10 yet, so...

Is Ubuntu just getting less stable overall??? (Evan Dandrea's installer isn't so great for encrypted or RAID disks, BTRFS, etc, too.)

  • @ThalamusMinimus

Actually 11.10 seems pretty solid here, my bugs are more like hiccups.

10.10 was pretty good though 11.04 was not so great for me

  • Yeah u re right!! Go to Opensuse if you like KDE. Why don't Ubuntu implement KDE very well? It's too bad.

  • @MarcusFHauser

limited resources on the kubuntu side I assume.... Mandriva does a great job too ;)

  • Well I got my Epson Stylus R340 printer to work with Kubuntu 11.10. Had to do a kernel upgrade. Apparently 3.0.0-12 has some issues with printer detection on some printers. Now everything works fine. Kubuntu is not bad for a vanilla KDE distro. I read that Mandrive 2011 has allot of issues, and openSuse 12.4 isn't out yet. Prefer a debian based distros. Hope you review Chakra when the new edition with KDE 4.7.2 comes out.

  • if u guys are looking for a kde based distro then i would suggest u guys to try pardus....it is one of the best kde distro that i have tried ...one of the problem is its package manager has only some 4000 approx softwares . but its worth trying out

  • @zeeshangtk

i've tried it before.... it has a great kde desktop. But the lack of packages and lack of 3rd party repos is a major deal breaker......

  • @Linux4UnMe why? I mean you can add and install everything, every package and 3rd party repos which you can install in Ubuntu GNOME too.

  • just a warning for people that have intel graphics only, DO NOT INSTALL THE META PACKAGE kubuntu-full, its gonna install DKMS modules u dont need like fglrx and nvidia's and a bunch of stuff, just so u know ;)

  • Hello, i really like the *buntus cause they just work and since Unity is bleh and gnome 3 is TOO simple and Xfce feels incomplete, im gonna try out kubuntu and prey to stick with it

  • @91jmda

haha cool. Kde rocks man ;) if you got decent specs

  • @Linux4UnMe nah, gnome 2 FTW! or xfde. ;)

    kudos

  • I use Linux almost exclusively at home, but KDE is still not fully suitable for this - it looks pretty, but isn't user-friendly is some small but important ways. The one that is most annoying to me is the inconsistent way it works with USB headsets - sometimes works, sometimes doesn't and not easy for a user (i.e. non-expert) to change - this is dead easy in Gnome and Unity and I can easily change between headset and speakers - therefore, I use Unity.

  • Canonical does so little to customize KDE, and Xubuntu a person might as well install Debian and make it their own.

  • What up with your consistent 29 dislikes in your videos? ;)

  • @pbezunartea

lol. I have a troll stalker who spams my vids with multiple fake accounts

  • @Linux4UnMe awww... I wish I had a troll stalker! XD

If you like customized distros you should give Lubuntu a try! It's tweaked to the max, lets you use Ubuntu in a really low resource hungry desktop. It's awesome, even on newer hardware!

  • I am so glad they didn't use a unity-like interface with kubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu 11.10 is complete garbage and I won't be installing any of the Ubuntu distros again if they continue to use Unity.

  • @HHO4ALL

    touche

  • @HHO4ALL I hear you man. I spent my day installing Kubuntu. Unity was the straw that broke the camels back. No more Ubuntu Unity interface for me.

  • @bophed I know they were trying to improve functionality in ubuntu by using unity, but it is so buggy and nothing is where it should be.

If they made Unity, or Gnome 3 an option that you could select during installation of the operating system, they would have made users happy, instead of breaking the distro!

  • Yeah, it's stupid that that bug hasn't been fixed, though I abolished the folder view widget as the first step in 4.0 and will do so upon installing any other. IMO I really think they shouldn't add the folder view widget by default, every other OS uses the desktop, to promote ease of use for new users, I feel that should be the default. Most people can't google to save their lives.

Else-wise, thanks for the review, you're right about the personalization, but that's not a big deal to me :-\.

  • The full upgrade refers to the distribution upgrade (ie. apt-get dist-upgrade) vs the 'cautious' upgrade which is just the regular upgrade (ie. apt-get upgrade).

  • Good job Kaddy, you pretty well covered everything thanks mate.

  • damnnnn wheres my dislike spam? this is rare...... c'mon "twilisawesome" you havn't dislike spammed me yet??? that's right...... i know it's you.... and i know you impersonate tim you little troll whore.......

  • @paperclipgmx

Kubuntu is ok. Not fantastic. That is my conclusion :P

If you think kubuntu is bad for gtk apps then mandriva will shock you........ who cares really..... best tool for the job...... whether it's qt or gtk...... what qt browser is better than firefox? none...... what office suite on linux is better than open/libre office? none.... i rest my case..... kubuntu installs vanilla kde....... that is what i meant. No tweaks/customisations...... just plain jane original kde.

  • They do not include wallpapers because of size. You have a button that says install default wallpapers.

  • @dude0that0kicks0ass

    lol that is bollocks mate

  • kool now do the new saybayon distro with gnome shells and xfce

  • @MetalxShredder600

lol downloading as we speak actually... dunno if i'll do xfce though... but definately gnome + kde... we'll see. I'll likely chuck it all in the 1 video instead of having 1 video gnome, 1 kde, 1 xfce.... etc.

  • Linux4Me, what distro are you running on your main desktop?.

  • @bkovacs7

ArchLinux all day, everyday, and aint ever leaving arch for another distro ;)

  • What they should do is put out an update that reverts Cups back to the version installed on 11.04. Allot of people are having similar problem with this release and Cups.

  • No I didn't. Spent half a day trying to get it to work. But with constant system settings crashes and printer detection problems. that were not present in 11.04 with KDE 4.7.1. I gave up and installed PCLinuxOS 2011, which just plain works. With PCLinuxOS 2011, all I really needed to change was to install the PAE kernel to take advantage of my 8GB RAM. Until the 64 version comes out. Hope this gets fixed by LTS.

  • @bkovacs7

bad luck eh. I didn't try installing my printer with my review..... Yeah Pclinuxos is a great great distro... very well tested packages, stable rock solid

  • if it's possible with Youtube, you could try making the vid with Ogg vorbis, and then upload, either that, or make it with Ogg Vorbis, convert, and upload.

  • @Arceusdude222

    what for?

  • @Linux4UnMe to possibly fix those audio/video sync problems. though honestly, I probably am talking about something I know nothing about.

  • @Arceusdude222

nar it wasn't a problem with the codecs i use.... it is likely ffmpeg at fault.... either that or something in buntu inteferring with it.

  • @Linux4UnMe hmmm, interesting, I'll have to look into that if I make a web video,

  • meh, after my latest foray into Unity, seems all I like about it is the fact that Thunderbird is preinstalled amd LightDM, everything else is meh, guess it's time to install Kubuntu!!! good thing my /home directory is on a seperate partition. nice vid, though.

  • @Arceusdude222

hehehe. good luck with it ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe eh, I like 11.10 of Kubuntu better than the Natty version, if only because of the bug in Amorok being fixed. the bug was regarding Ipod Nano 5g.

  • With this release I had some problems. Particularly with cups and frequent crashes when exiting system settings. I own a Epson Stylus Photo R340 printer, and this release falsely identifies it as a storage device vs USB printer. So cups will not recognize my printer. Didn't have this problem with 11.04. Also when trying to add my printer than exiting the system settings. I constantly would get crashes. I know cups was updated today, but no fix.

  • @bkovacs7

did you try manually loading the cups interface via h t t p and manually installing the printer settings etc? There is an archlinux w i k i on how to do that. just search for cups on arch wiki

  • one of your best video's to date mate, pity about the lag(audio/video) at times but that might have been my end, but one thing that might be in their favor is that now they are going to integrate K and G things may get better

  • @sneekylinux

thanx sneeky. Yeah i'm getting a lag problem with ffmpeg on the buntu end....

  • I find always found it odd that there is a Kde logo instead of the ubuntu logo in the corner

    Whatevs

  • they were talking about Mint switching KDE to Debian Based.

  • @Ubuntufrog

    yeah I heard that too.

  • You could try ZevenOS-Neptune 2.0 Full which aims to be a better alternative to Kubuntu but still be Debian based. The final version is comming out this weekend. So I suggest testing this ;) zevenos[dot]com/neptune

  • @llelectronics

i may take a look at some point. thanx

  • The "Ubuntu" Entry in Grub is actually no bug as its a technical limitation. If they would change it to Kubuntu they would have problems with packages from Ubuntu as all ubuntu based distros use the same package for the release and version information of Ubuntu. So even Xubuntu and Lubuntu show Ubuntu in the Grub Bootscreen.

  • @llelectronics

So answer me this.... why does LinuxMint say "Linux Mint" on their grub entry then even though they use the ubuntu repositories? It hasn't got anything to do with it mate

  • @Linux4UnMe Linux Mint ships with a modified base-files packages. Thats the reason.

In ubuntu there is only one base-files package shared by all distros (Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu).

Its technically not possible with the current build system to ship each distro with another base-files package, as all of them use the same repository. The only thing Kubuntu and co can do is propose a base-files-$distro package. But that might break dependencies very badly.

  • @llelectronics

hhmmmm. you may be right.... It's not something I have looked into to see how

it can be done... Didn't think it would that much of a problem....cheers for the comments though man.

  • i liked how my laptops internal wireless and my usb wireless both worked right away with this i noticed the desktop folder bug as well but after a couple of attempts it let me add shortcuts to it so it was all good i never thought of deleting it and re adding it anyway thanks for the review good job dude

  • @kingkong14957

    cheers man

  • Kubuntu badly needs a better menu. Kickoff is very poor.

I'd love the functionality of GNOME2 to be blended with the eye candy of KDE.

  • @Laoch111

i'm not big on the kickoff menu either, I usually switch it to classic. Lancelot menu is alright.... but the mint menu is probably my favourite

  • @Linux4UnMe My favorite menu at the moment would be Cardapio on gnome 2 :D

  • @Scotsman707

    nice. just looked at it

  • @Linux4UnMe I opt for the GnoMenu in GNOME2.

  • @Laoch111

    yeah gnomenu aint bad

  • I'm waiting until Chakra Linux to get out of alpha/beta before I make it my main desktop since it's focus is purely on making the best kde distro ever

  • @Nekryu

yeah... i like chakra... but they are pretty limited in resources for development... coming along slowly though

  • I too wish they would give Kubuntu a bit more love, especially considering Unity is still unusable (literally) with my Nvidia card. It's nice enough anyway, and easy to customize to my liking.

I've tried other distros like Suse and Sabyon, and they are nicer and more refined out of the box, but the *buntus offer so much extra, like Launchpad for instance, that I find myself sticking with Kubuntu, even though I have to install 2GBs of packages on a fresh install. Anyhow, nice review!

  • @Brutus1581

Yeah... Kubuntu does have "some" advantages over other top Kde distros such as that and alot more package selection without manually adding 3rd party repos..... Mandriva especially need to do something about that... cheers! :D

  • @Linux4UnMe Yea, I guess I'm also a bit biased...I started on Ubuntu so everything is much easier for me on it. I tried Fedora 14, for instance, and after I got a feel for how it worked I'll never use it again. I mention Suse because it has some great features, like there build service thingy; Sabyon is shaping up to be awesome too. I'm also spending lots of time learning Arch. But having used *buntu for several years as my primary OS, I'm the curmudgeon yelling "Get off my lawn!"

  • Is this 64bit or 32bit?

  • @olddellhelp 32bit

  • The folder view worked for me the first time i tried it...

i have a 3g ram comp and kubuntu/ubuntu always runs heavy and buggy than any other distro on my comp. even linux mint works great.

  • @jesse8258

I have had the folderview problem every kubuntu release for atleast 4 cycles o_0

  • I would guess maybe the default folder view has root privileges or something?

  • You said it all brother , great review !

    Thanks.

  • @gzenum

    thanx man

  • Good review! Kubuntu is faster and better! It deserves more attention!

  • @rsaranyann

I only wish the devs gave it more attention to detail/branding like suse and mandriva :(

  • Really good review!

  • @DaSilentLprince

    ta :)

  • Cool Review and nice to see someone do a review on the latest Kubuntu for a change...

From what i have seen of the Beta version OpenSuse 12.1 is going to be a great alternative to Kubuntu...Sadly i have never seem to have had a good experience with any Mandriva releases.

  • @OmenX13

i've always liked suse and mandriva.... but we need more kde distros out there i reckon ;)

  • You can install the Ubuntu Software Centre in Kubuntu, but it pulls in a crapload of dependencies for GTK. I was very happy with Kubuntu 11.04, but this just seems overly buggy. Looks like I'll be finding another KDE distro =/

  • I totally agree with this review. The desktop-map-folder problem is really annoing indeed. Perhaps I will switch to OpenSUSE when version 12.1 comes out. The thing I don't like about OpenSUSE is YAST (gtk and ugly and slow). I have actually installed Apper on Kubuntu 11.10 as the package installer. Muon didn't work for me...

  • @Sverro2

thanx for the comment... apper? don't think i've seen that one. nice

  • @Linux4UnMe Apper is the newest version of Kpackagekit (wich isn't called Kpackagekit but Apper :D).

  • 8:05 File a bug?

  • @WarriorIng64

indeed.... i should. I have filed many other kde related bugs recently

  • Your reviews are getting really good mate, plenty of uselful info. Canonical do seem to have put 90% of their effort into Ubuntu, ironically Kubuntu is better I reckon. Mistake.

  • @jerrytaichi

thanx man. appreciated. I actually agree

  • I must say, Kubuntu IS the best ubuntu release out there atm.

This whole unity thing sucks and it's way too slow.

And the Kubuntu software are far more stable too, I think.

But you said Suse is better than kubuntu?

I haven't tried suse. But I think I remember someone said Fedora w/ KDE is the best KDE OS atm. Is that true?

I have an idea. If you could and had the chance to.

Could you do a huge linux OS DE test?

Best new OS's with KDE, Gnome 2, Gnome Shell, Unity, LXDE, XFCE, Mate and E17 atm.

  • @blackoutworm

I meant that Suse and mandriva pay more attention to Kde and brand their distros/implement new tools/ideas etc....... they give their kde distros more love. Kubuntu doesn't really have any of that... but it's a good start for a newbie as it is really easy to use with alot more packages available out of the box. Fedora + kde? meh... about equal as Kubuntu but harder to use for the average user. Hehe, I could... "maybe" ;)

  • Hey Thank you, pretty nice softwarecenter. its faster than the one from Ubuntu :D

I switched to KDE finally with this release, and I won't switch back to Gnome I would say, only maybe XFCE. I just like KDE...

But I have to say that 11.10 messed up my xorg.conf ... Starting KDE ends in X Crash, only Failsafe worked. So , remove NVIDIA drivers, remove xorg.conf via Live CD and then reinstall worked... Never had this problem before... The driver from the NVidia site is much smoother :)

  • @illegalalien2 I had same problem when I upgraded to kubuntu 11.10. It didn't crash on my computer though... It just fall back on the nouveau drivers.

  • @Sverro2 For me somehow as well, but without 3D Accelartion support :D

But whats now a bit stupid, the root shell is useless now ! When I wanted to edit the xorg via the root shell in the recovery mode, it said " Filesystem is read only"... that never happened ever before :D

  • @illegalalien2

yeah strange.. ohwell, you fixed it. heh

  • @Linux4UnMe Yeah I fixed it, but I still wonder WHY it happened... There was no xorg-update and I was using this driver already since a week, that doesnt make sense for me :D Only the KDE Startup up could be faster, but beside that KDE is now faster than on 10.04 :)

  • Great review dude, you are undoubtedly the #1 Linux Reviewer on YouTube.

Glad to see your channel is on an upward spiral, and I really appreciate all the promotion you do for the Linux Community, keep up the great work bro ;)

  • Kubuntu the KDE desktop version of Ubuntu... Right? Thanks so much for such a great review..... appreciate the time you put into it... very informative.

  • @LudwigSpiegel

that is correct. And thanx for the comment :D
