It is not real wood, just made to look like it. I have seen square foot gardens made with table legs. They should do fine as long as you have at least 6 inches of good soil. Not sure about the hydroponics question though. If you get Mel Bartholomews book it will show you the wide range of options that you would have for planting. I like to grow things that we as a family use a lot. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce etc.
I love your sqr. ft. raised garden beds! I am going to attempt to build mine this 2012 yr. I have read up, researched, and am very excited to start. I have been even more inspired by seeing your efforts. Thank you for this video.
This is brilliant. I really love your accent (i'm from Australia) you sound like mr garrison from south park. I will def. use the pvc to protect my plants. The whole set up looks so neat and well thought out.Thank you.
Very efficient looking! I love it. Im goingt o have to put a walkway around my garden ...I cant stand weeding. UGH! And I just LOVE the PVC PIPE for the green house!!!
that soil looks very shallow! I have found with my square foot gardens the deeper the bed the better for root growth. I would recommend adding soil until its level with the top of the wood.
Seriously, I have fallowed Mel Bartholomeows Square foot gardening . Nevertheless, the plants did poorly. Doing it the old way, in raised, large garden bed, and one large garden bed, with good soil, and compost and rotten material, the plants are growing huge. I have tons of tomatoes this year, my grape vine is growing out of the norm. I wold not recommend square foot gardening.
@wendl4 Im going to start on these...have just left the British Royal Marine Commandos after 14 years service and attained the rank of Sergeant Major....just finished a 12 month tour of Helmand Province Afghanistan, so finished on a high note haha.....These square foot gardens and the technique itself, Do you get much out of it? I mean produce wise, do you get much from it?
Looks great by the way. All the best from Portsmouth, England
@nicko978 My garden is 4ft x 8ft. The pvc hoops are 10ft long, but really does not have to be that long. I have considered shortening mine. The plants are still small by the time that I take it down, but it does give them a head start. They have survived some cold nights that I know would have killed them.It would still work well if you made them shorter and would probably be a little easier to work with. Hope things work well for you. I have really enjoyed mine!!
very, very nice............ I can tell you thought all the details through. I have been and am thinking about doing what you did. keep up the good work and enjoy..
@zornitzayoung It is growing really well. The nylon netting is really making it easy to work with my tomato and cucumber plants.I started almost all from seeds. They are almost to the top of the netting now!! As someone suggested earlier, I do recommend giving another foot in between the 2 gardens. That walk way is being over taken.mostly by watermelon plants.I also love my soaker hoses. The green house worked really well also!! Easy to put up and take down. It gave my plants a head start.
Looks Great! And thanks so much for the info! It wasn't too much or long drawn out... but it was just enough to let some of us who don't know what we're doing get a clue! : )
Hey man, beautiful job. Much better than my garden. On a side note, if anyone is copying you I would suggest you seperate the 2 gardens another foot or so, because your plants will make that walkway impassable if you treat them right. Cheers!
lmfao yeah veggies with arsenic from your treated wood

Do you start your plants in potters-small potting units and then transfer?
Any secrets to that?

Wow nice setup - my beds are the same size - might steal your greenhouse idea! Love the hooks to hold up the sides too. Thanks - great video

Doesnt the peat moss raise your ph after about 6-8 weeks? or is that what the vermiculite is for?

Awesome - it looks great. This is exactly what I'd like to have someday when I have a lot with a nice sunny spot for it.
