Maybe in the navy it's fo damage, but in civilian aviation, FOD means fo debris. I used to work for an FBO, and that's what they teach. So I agree with damnpoor, he's right.
then you and him are both complete dumbasses and should stick to commenting on whatever it is your qualified to comment on, besides Naval Aviation and trying to persuade yourself and others that you know anything about what your talkin about you dumbass cause thats exactly what you are, its FOD you moron, always has been!
could have been in internal fod, could also have come from the deck, or could have been a missing tool as well, this is why we have to hae tool pouches checked before and after every launch sequence and after each check. BTW, FOD means "foreign object damage" not debris, and on carries all flight deck personnel as well as squadrons personnel and all available hands perform the fod walkdown, its a big evolution
The only people I know that calls FOD "foreign object debris" are nonners and desk jockeys and that shit gets on my nerves. Lol! Maybe in the Navy they let them guy have tool pouches, in AF were only allowed tools boxes. Pouches are so civillian depot shit. haha. Alongs with personal flashlights, since crewchiefs don't know how to leave the inlet with them.
It's foreign object debris until it damages something, then it becomes foreign object damage. The debris are the little pieces of things that could cause damage and the damage is what that little piece of something does to the airplane. When you do a "FOD check" you're looking for debris, not damage.
your talkin to a U.S. Naval AD2(AW/SW)(aviation machinist mate pety officer 2nd class). Please, i know your not trying to tell me what its called or how things work on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier! Its called FOD (Foreign Object Damage) PERIOD. There is no "debris" in it my friend. Also we do FOD walkdowns, we dont call them checks, tool pouches are inspected before and after each check on an A/C as well as before and after the pouch is signed out. Go research somemore no-nothing
ITS FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE, all the time because its always potential damage. Com work the flight deck with me, i will school you on how thing work during flight ops!
It's no use, man. I've never worked the line, but I was 8 years Army SO community. I've done plenty of FOD wheels for LZs. I've also had dozens upon dozens of civilians try to correct me on every piece of terminology used (weaponry, nomenclature, tactics, everything else you can imagine). This is a battle you won't win, my friend. They play Jet Simulator IX, or whatever, and think they're swinging man meat after that. Until they've stood in the 6-pack during recovery, they'll never know.
that was not FOD most likely internal failure.. if it was a fod it would have come apart on initial wind up to mil power. ive worked plenty of 404s and that looked like a compressor and turbine coming apart.. but FOD is Foreign Object Damage... NOT Foreign Object Debris go research some more and the only FOD check is conducted in the intakes after major maintenance and that was on the F-14 I agree with the AD2 go research.. and im an AD1 btw.. we know what we are talking about
i guess i shouldnt expect someone such as yourself, that has zero maintanace hours logged and no aviation experience to understand terminology, one and for all, its called FOD (foreign object damage) because all FOD is damage and potential damage, its not called debris, and the people that say it is are OBVOULSY no associated with Aviation maintenace like i AM, 8 years Naval Aviation, AD1(AW/SW) VFA-11. So to those like hellhammer66669, dont post on shit you know nothing about, its funny!!
Foreign Object Damage or Foreign Object Debris (FOD) is a substance, debris or article alien to the vehicle or system which would potentially cause damage. Foreign Object Damage is any damage attributed to a foreign object that can be expressed in physical or economic terms that may or may not degrade the product's required safety and/or performance characteristics.
I know nothing on the subject and this definition is purely from Wikipedia so, given your expertise, I'll side with you!
i find it hard to believe your an AME1, if i want a seat check out i will give you a call, for one, its always calles foreign object damage because its always potential, and if you were a real A/C maintainer, you would know that, go back to your A-school, or put me in touch with your command so i can inform them that they have a highly unqualified air dale amongst them!
It really doesn't matter. What's cool is that we were actually filming it when it happened.. The command actually took my camera when they found out I had filmed it, but then they gave it back.. Turns out QA just wanted to review it..
Looks more like internal FOD, like a fand or compressor blade letting go. Whatever it was it damn sure was a descent size and it was metal. Highly doubt it was something big on the deck unless someone fucked up on the FOD walk.
why dont they just add those steel mesh filters on the Air inlets that they put on the engines when they test them on stands? i meen theyre gonna need to restrict the air flow to keep it sub sonic any ways so i dont think it would hurt the performance at all.
1: At that velocity, something the size of a jelly bean (or much smaller) would be like shooting a gun into the engine. To "fence off" objects that small you would need a very fine mesh... The surface area of that mesh would equate to a sizable blockage for the intakes...
2: The mesh itself, (when struck by an object moving that fast), would only add to the debris entering the engine...
@carlosr428 The mesh screen could get blocked birds, trash, etc it would lower the air intake causing the plane to crash a fodded engine can still fly (not good for it though) but no intake=less power less power=lawn dart.
There are two kinds of compressor stalls; axis-symmetric stall and rotational stall. The latter causes air flow disruption when pockets of air rotate within the compressor without moving along the axis. Without fresh air from the intake passing over the stalled compressor vanes they overheat, causing accelerated engine wear and damage. That is what you are seeing.
dude its fod. I test engines at Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12 for a living. hot air does not cause damage to the cold section. if the temp was so high as to cause damage, the pilot would shutdown and turn in the engine for inspection. this is a stall.
It FOD'ed out whether it was something on the ground or internally like a blade or something. It was at mil for a while so I'll take my bets with internal.
I think the Hornet simply had a case of indigestion. As you can clearly see, it FOD'ed. I do the same after eating something that disagrees with my colon. Like beans.
can't necessarily blame FOD for that - more likely a compressor or turbine blade failure (especially with the multiple incidence and major sparks ejected for both)
Its DEBRIS you stupid prick!

is that why they put a blast shield?

@CX14799 The blast deflector is there only to deflect the hot hot exhaust gases upward for high power runs and take off.

I have a couple guesses...
Just a guess or two. I could be way off...
scrotumboy 3 years ago 8
Nope, I think you nailed it, but to be sure lets add another reason
-Restricted airflow and turbulence that could starve the engine of air at steep AOA's and slow approach speeds.
101pete 3 years ago
Optimum speed for airflow into the engine is about 0.4 mach
Sterlingjob 3 years ago
you are dead on!
mtleverett 3 years ago
So why does the F117 have a mesh in front of the inlet?
Sterlingjob 3 years ago
117's are subsonic and low performance which is why they are better suited for bombing runs and not air superiority. They at least look cool, though
101pete 3 years ago
Engines wear less at altitude, than on the deck

not sure what you're getting at...
