Well what do you hate about the question "what do you do?" Seems like you are inferring they asking "what do you do for work?" or being intrusive? If someone asks me that question, I take it from the point of view that they care about what my life is like.
Pretty much I would just like people to ask "what do you do for a living?" or just something more specific than just "what do you do?" and yes, Sometimes I do find it intrusive when someone asks me "What are your plans for the future?" Because It honestly puts my in a crappy spot where I have to tell them that I have no plans and basically I fail at life.
Sure I don't have a problem with these questions if it is the right person asking them. If it is somebody that I know truly cares about me then I have no problem answering those questions. But if it's that awkward conversation with someone you just met or haven't seen in years then NO I don't want to answer those questions. Because they really could care less what is going on in my life all they are trying to do is make conversation.
