Yeah, this episode is kind of a turning point since they open up to each other. (Rataxes has opened up a little bit to Babar before, but Babar hasn't had an occasion to do the same, before this.) I notice in the next season, Rataxes comes to Babar for help a couple times, and even has Victor on Babar's team in Rowing Pains.
BTW, ever notice how quickly Rataxes gets over the knowledge that he was tricked about the moon thing? He reacts melodramatically at first, but then shrugs it right off... I think he either didn't care that much about really owning the moon (as long as Lady Rataxes and his citizens thought he did), or maybe he somewhat suspected that the deal wasn't totally on the up and up to begin with (and didn't care because it still served his purpose as long as everyone else was sold.)
Instead of making a big deal out of it, all he does is laugh at the memory of Babar and Arthur in the alien costumes. That's pretty cool of him.
(I also think it's neat that he lets Victor play over at Babar's place with Pom, Flora, and Alexanda - and vice versa. Least he's not totally and completely drowning his son in prejudice. ^^)
Yeah, I like that too! :) When it comes to prejudice, Rataxes talks the talk but doesn't really walk the walk ^^. Rataxes hides behind a lot of bluster and talks a lot of smack...and I don't think he believes his own hype (most of the time).
I think he probably just doesn't wanna come off as a softy or a goody-good (not that he's really a goody-good, per se.)
He seems like the most human character to me - how you never really see who he is on the inside because of the way he acts on the outside, you know? =)
(Oh and Alexanda above = Alexander. XD Lol, sounds like I have a Boston accent.)
Yeah, I agree, he definitely doesn't want to come off as a softy or a goody-good! Anything but a softy! That would just ruin his reputation, LOL
And yeah, I wouldn't really call him a goody-good (he's willing to be a bully and play the villain), but he's softy, underneath it all. ;) He might be a goody-good by rhino king standards, though. (He leads a militant nation and is anti-war!) XD
Totally! - A very human character and certainly the most complex. =)
Probably why he's so unpopular among his people, too - even though it does seem like a lot of them would be just as content NOT to go to war (the characters, I think, are basically just human beings in animal clothing - I don't imagine most of them would want to go to war any more than they'd want to die.)
It's really interesting how much symbolism you can find on this show, and I don't mean just the colonialism.
I think the older generation of military personnel would still be gung-ho for war (sometimes people dedicated to soldering would rather go out in battle in a blaze of glory), but I think the average soldier and citizen is ultimately fine with peace. I think what they miss is the conquering (the winning). And rhinos don't seem content with being #2. Rataxes is almost always coming in second to Babar, so that definitely hurts his popularity. (cont.)
I think Rataxes' unpopularity is caused by a combination of:
-consistently coming in second (and often humiliating himself in the attempt to win)
-not really willing to win at all costs (he'll give up a ploy at the request of Lady Rataxes or will compromise if winning means too much villainy...if he thinks about it)
-not willing to war and will even stop war (is ultimately nontraditional)
- having ungrateful citizens (they seem to be well taken care of and they *want* him to act mean/bullying)
I agree, there is much symbolism to be found in the show and I love what you said about them being humans in animal clothing...so true on multiple levels! =D
That Poor Hunter, got burned-up.

awesome episode.

This is such a touching episode. =)
The friction Babar and Rataxes always had is kind of abated (sp?)
(Btw I meant to rate this a 5, not a 1. ;__;)

Yeah, those are good points.
It must ultimately be a good thing that he's in charge, instead of some war-mongering battle-crazed rhino (like Pamir.)

Thanks :)
Yeah, definitely better for everyone that Pamir isn't king! XD
