wars, hatred, murders, judgement and condemnation of others. These are NOT Christian nor Biblical; they go against everything Jesus taught, yet we see the Priests and Churches carrying them out in great fashion. And Maher here, is falling right for their deceptions.
@3VOLution3NO I really appreciate reading your comments. You put everything I think into words! You are absolutely correct. To be Christian is to be Christlike. When Jesus was on the cross and the Roman Solider stabbed him with the spear, Jesus did not hate that man, rather he FORGAVE him. Christians these days are the first to tell you what they hate! Thats not being Christian, thats following the Orthodox and calling yourself one. Anybody can do that....
Exactly. You have eyes to see and ears to hear unlike most. Realize the difference between Religion and Jesus. Religion is what sought to kill Him when He healed a man on the Sabbath. Just as today, as it was back then, religion is a way to control and manipulate. Precisely why Jesus rebuked the Scribes and Pharisees, calling them HYPOCRITES, a 'Den of Vipers', "Ye are of your father the DEVIL" [John 8:44 KJV] God bless.
The Moneylender Media tells us we are all Judeochristians. This makes no more sense than that we are all Islamochristians. Every American should support the one man who will work for Americans, not against them.
Yes indeed, there are MANY Christians who are non-Christians. I have an idea; why don't you find some real Christians and have them on your show to show the pretend Christians what a real Christian is like ? Come on ! I know you can do it !!!!! I triple-dog-dare you !
Good idea. Maybe, we'd stop a lot of this neglect, discrimination, distruction, and pollution masked as protecting America's " Values " that some of us are embracing.
That's a nice no true scottsman you have there. FYI, Bill Maher probably knows that he is talking bullshit. The christ of the bible was an evil dick - any objective reader of the bible can easily see why. Maher is probably sacrificing this fact so he can slap on the wrists of american christians and make them think and live a bit better life.
Is it weird that as a Christian I kind of like Bill Maher? It's kind of like that girl that's really not hot at all but you're still sort of attracted to her in some weird way and you can't explain it. Even thought I agree with almost nothing that he says, and I don't know where he gets his statistics from, and he constantly generalizes religious people from the examples of a few extremists. I like him. I really can't explain why. He's amusing in a very strange sort of way.
@dan25pim Hey Dan, I dont think its weird at all. He is funny. And maybe his generalizations are more than defining a few extremists. I have know a few very wonderful Christians and whole churches (some with thousands in the crowd and all whooping when something judgmental and hateful is said) and I find that what he just said on this video is my average experience of a Christian, to include within my family and a school I went to when I was a teen. : )
@kunamishWell your experience is certainly valid. But in my experience, the people in my life who call themselves Christians are actually Christian. These "Christians" that Maher is talking about, the guys he bashes on his show or makes fun of in his pseudo-documentary only seem to exist in the media. I mean of course there's idiots out there. From every corner of every faith (or lack of faith). But the media loves to focus on the crazies. But who can blame them? Good people are boring right?
@dan25pim If you belonged to a political party or a social club that was tied to as much bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, violence and sheer ignorance as religion is, you'd resign in protest. To do otherwise is to be an enabler, a Mafia wife.
Evangelical christians practice torture more than any other religion??? What?? It ain't christians that are sawing off people's heads with butcher knives.
Hey Bill, if you think what Obama did was wrong by killing Osama from a Christian standpoint, you should read Romans 13:4 from the bible. It says: "For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer." As you can see from this verse, the bible DOES grant governments the right to punish evildoers for their acts, regardless of how you see it.
@pcalum58 That passage gives governments the right to punish evildoers? For real? Try reading what your typing. He meaning one person...is the servant of God, does not in any way mean that Government meaning a group of people is given the right in a Biblical sense to do anything. This is exactly why there are so many religious sects. Biblical interpretation is a bitch! And this is in no way what that passage meant...and is complete contradiction merciful God we are all told about...
@texfb30 Actually, God is a vengeful God as well, and that comes out in verses like this one. And I DID read what I typed. People like Bill Maher are completely wrong if they think that part of being Christian is being against killing anyone is way off base. Yes, Jesus was against it, but Christians answer to God as well, and there are many instances in the Bible where God commands people to be killed for wrongdoings.
@Joseph24300 It's good to have people like you posting hateful, passive-aggressive drivel of this sort. If not for you and your ilk, I'd have one less thing to set my watch to.
@parkylondon wise words said by a man who was constantly persecuted and taunted by christians. if jesus christ was alive, i reckon he'd spit in the face of about 60% of modern-day christians.
@saved03 He doesn't reason like that because that's typically religious "logic". So no, he doesn't, I honestly think he has better things to do than hate any particular group. Also he's clearly not mocking ALL Christians, only the hypocrites.
@CompletlyBunned I'm not saying that there are no hypocrites in Christianity but by allowing a few hypocrates to influence an opinion of the whole is an act of self righteousness, I'm better than you attitude. Hey we(humans) are all hypocrates one way or another. This is why we all need a Savior. I'm a hypocrite myself. However this only shows the weakness I have, not the Lord's.
@th3villain You know those words are of a character from one of the Jesus' parables, do you? Is Stephanie Meyer a male vampire just because she wrote about some sparkly dude saying that?
people need to get over the criticism of religions. why is that the only taboo subject? all other beliefs you hold in life are open to be inspected and you can ultimately be judged on them. why not your belief in an ancient book written by men, ignorant of the world they lived in? christians better get used to it, you will never see another time where you won't be ridiculed for your harmful belief system.
"Ghandi was so F***ing Christian he was Hindu"--Really? Maher should go to India and see how Hindus treat their poor. They wallow in filth while the Brahmins ride over them in their Mercedes. He makes a lot of sense with domestic economic issues. But he is so shallow in his opinions about the larger world.
@Pharoah7400 sounds kinds like all the followers of mother Teresa eh? Her followers were extremely sick and poor. Taken care of horribly because they were supposed to just "pray" to get better. And mother Teresa had over 50 million dollars...
Too bad, Bill - one day you will find out how wrong you are unless the Holy Spirit convicts your heart before then. Jesus said follow Him, not another person. "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one." (Romans 3:10) That's why we need the gift of salvation that Christ provides. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9)
Christians, i.e., true believers are not perfect; they are saved. But if they are saved they have repented, which means they have turned away from sin. Do they continue to sin? Sometimes, because on this earth we are still in the natural body and human. But we continually try to follow Christ and do as He commanded. Investigate the Truth for yourself. Read the Bible. You will be amazed - and hopefully convicted. We are saved by grace, "Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:9)
@ilovecanines: You're great at cherry-picking scripture quotes, but your listening skills are incredibly poor. He wasn't mocking Christ. He was mocking those who falsely claim to follow Christ.
Talk about haters. Bill would like us all to just sit idle, and die while evil people take over. It is not wrong to want to protect our families and friends from Muslim extremists. Wake up! They do not preach peace, because they don't believe in it. The majority of Muslims do believe in it. The majority don’t like Shariah law. I am happy that we are still strong enough to take up arms, to defend our way of life, and our freedom to believe in whatever we choose. There is nothing wrong with that.
@cinemaloon Ofcourse you can view others as evil and bomb the shit out of them. But then don't call yourself christian. Because as Bill points out, Jesus taught you otherwise.
And you really have to question who the aggressors are and who are simply defending their country against invaders. From their point of view, the invading army are the evil ones. And what you call terrorists, they call freedom fighters.
@cinemaloon you are an idiot. Bill Maher agrees we should kick terrorist butt, and he was all for Osama getting assassinated. He just says you can't claim you are a Christian and feel that way. And he's right. It is completely antithetical to Jesus' teachings.
He is a (Jew) OK" what do they say about gays in there HolyBook Israel-Jews,-what about the Palestine crimes on these peoples /Islam-Muslim-extremist Muslims will kill anyone that are none Muslim and other Muslim if they do not agree with them. (by the bus load). So the world will always be this way ,We fight for( freedom) we then have more than most of the people in the world.
I'm an agnostic, but I think Maher has some serious issues if he spends so much time trying to discredit the majority who are never going to change or go away. The question must be asked, what's his malfunction? Give it a rest,
@probrojeffro ignorant statement is ignorant. Keep trying to tell people that they can't change the world or people by discussing important topics. That's a great way to think.
@probrojeffro This isn't just directed to Evangelicals. He got me interested in agnosticism and atheism by doing what he does. Eventually I gave up religion all together.
There's a really good book that I'd like to recommend that might help put Bill's sermon into perspective. It's called "The Body" by Chuck Colson. Not a difficult read and highly informative.
This 'monologue' is focused on the hypocrisies that are committed by people who claim to be a 'follower of Christ' and at the same time ignore most, if not all, of his teachings. These people might be 'fans' of Christ and his teachings, but they certainly can't call themselves 'Christians', which is a term reserved for 'followers of Christ'.
I'm a Christian. And I agree with a lot of these points.
But by saying "CHRISTIANS" miss the point he's being as ridiculous as anyone who says "all black people love fried chicken" or all "Chinese people are good at mathematics".
Stereotypical categorization, not even based on the majority, but instead based on the ridiculous, idiotic, Wesboro Baptist church and the likes.
I'm so sick and tired people base their opinion of an entire religion on a few idiotic zealots.
@b15h0p The problem is that too many Churches are doing some of the things he says - such as sceaming at gay people or treating non-Christians as inferiors - without being condemned by "mainstream" Churches. Mainstream Churches' silence is complicity. And I'm a Christian too ;)
@Etudianteindigne i agree completely. but im just pointing out that it's ridiculous to say we're all like that
@CroneGrimalkin i never said i condoned pesecution of other faiths or agreed with it. does the fact that other people have been persecuted in the past make it ok to persecute christians today? i dont think so.
@b15h0p So then...now you know how so many other people who belong to other religions feel & have felt for centuries. Can we all spell "persecuted"????!
maher bullshit nailed by christian: maher provides a good critique of some christians (a little much at times) and states some key parts of Jesus' teaching (also a little much at times haha) but he leaves out other key parts which are what those people are trying to respond to (sometimes in the wrong way); such as homosexuality and abortion. I do kind of agree with him on Osama. It's not as easy as Maher puts it out in his critique tho. "the way is hard and few are those who take it"
This implies that the real teachings of Christianity are good. To be a real Christian you must hate gays, treat women as servants, preach to everyone who is not a christian, stone your children to death if they are disobedient, tell children they are sinful and wicked and many more lovely things like that.
My brother ran over & killed a 12YO boy 10yrs ago, but escaped prosecution DESPITE having drunk what he estimates was “10-12 strong beers” that afternoon.
Police breathalysed him, but the machine must have been broken because it showed him being totally clean! They accepted his story of the boy ‘stupidly’ running out into the road & that was that. He puts the incident down to prayer- “GOD provided that breath-test result- HIS WILL protected me!”
How do you explain the book of Genesis, with the Catholic church embracing evolution as one of God's greatest works? They shamelessly hijack anything in light of such overwhelming evidence and have done since the 1950's. Does the Catholic church promote this "fact?"
No.
So at best it's apocryphal, begging the question, just how much else of it is only apocryphal, fairy tales. Believing in talking snakes, virgin births and creation stories the Pope himself denies, how much crazier can you get?
@UKantitheist1 "...They shamelessly hijack anything in light of such overwhelming evidence and have done since the 1950's..." You need to do a just little more research because The Catholic Church has been hijacking holidays, mythologies, & various other stuff from other religions & cultures since atleast first century A.D.!
@UKantitheist1 If you had a bit of a brain you would know that you do not need to take the stories in the Bible for REAL. It's based on what's important to people. The Genesis is an Appeal to us to make the world a better world. Maybe it says And so was the everything made But that's not the centre of the whole story ( By the way you need to know that the stories in the Bible are PRE-science. In that time they thought the world was flat...)
@UKantitheist1 And one more thing, because some idiots read the Bible as a DAMN science book, you dont need to generalize it to the Catholic church. The people who read the Bible as real happened stories ( some of them are) are a minority in the Christian group ( almost all centered in the US). And yes the pope is an IDIOT and a retarded ass. Sorry for the people who like the pope, but it's true.
@UKantitheist1 They've been doing that since long before the 50's.
They've absorbed Saturnalia as Christmas, the Ishtar/Eastre festivals as Easter, many festivals for pagan gods as Saints' Days etc, etc and preached every politician, lord and king from the pulpit because it was politically expedient to do so.
@UKantitheist1 If by "shamelessly hijack" you mean "accept scientific evidence in spite of backlash from your community." How can you chastise a group for being open-minded? Isn't that the exact opposite of what the anti-theism movement is about? Good for the Catholic church embracing evolution.
Are you sure you weren't called to be a Minister for Christ? As a Follower of Christ, I know and believe what you're pointing out here. Happy New Year, Bill!
@emelton07 Everyone interperates the Bible differently, my friend. Someone can see it saying one thing and other might see it saying another thing. Its like reading a story book, people might see the blue curtains as the protagonists "sad" feeling, others might just say that the curtains were fucking blue.
@emelton07 Depends on what your definition of love and enemy is. Some people see love as in being nice to, which personally isn't my definition. Understand now?
I'm a Christian, even by his definition, and I agree with what he's saying. There is so much hypocrisy and lying among false Christians that it's no wonder people choose to be atheists. Christianity is a huge turnoff because of misrepresentatives, and this man is using satire to point these misrepresentations out. That's not to say all Christians are like that, but the problem is, NO Christian should be like that. So while I found some of his jokes mildly offensive, my props to him.
@ScopeSF its not possible to be a christian, thats why u guys only do it a hour a week, to be a hypocrite in christianity is basically to be a normal person in society.
@sprookafook The people who do it for "an hour a week," aren't Christians as God, or Christ for that matter, wants them to be. However, that doesn't mean people like that don't exist. What is impossible is to be a perfect human being, but what IS possible is to be someone who lives their life for Christ, purposefully avoiding worldly temptations, That's what I try to be, and that's what this man from this video says Christians really should be.
"Really. It's in that book you hold up when you scream at gay people."
Hahahaha I love this man <3

Yes indeed, there are MANY Christians who are non-Christians. I have an idea; why don't you find some real Christians and have them on your show to show the pretend Christians what a real Christian is like ? Come on ! I know you can do it !!!!! I triple-dog-dare you !

He's amusing in a very strange sort of way.
dan25pim 1 month ago 2

Hey Bill, if you think what Obama did was wrong by killing Osama from a Christian standpoint, you should read Romans 13:4 from the bible. It says: "For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer." As you can see from this verse, the bible DOES grant governments the right to punish evildoers for their acts, regardless of how you see it.
pcalum58 1 month ago
@pcalum58 That passage gives governments the right to punish evildoers? For real? Try reading what your typing. He meaning one person...is the servant of God, does not in any way mean that Government meaning a group of people is given the right in a Biblical sense to do anything. This is exactly why there are so many religious sects. Biblical interpretation is a bitch! And this is in no way what that passage meant...and is complete contradiction merciful God we are all told about...
texfb30 1 month ago
@texfb30 Actually, God is a vengeful God as well, and that comes out in verses like this one. And I DID read what I typed. People like Bill Maher are completely wrong if they think that part of being Christian is being against killing anyone is way off base. Yes, Jesus was against it, but Christians answer to God as well, and there are many instances in the Bible where God commands people to be killed for wrongdoings.

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9)
ilovecanines 1 month ago
Christians, i.e., true believers are not perfect; they are saved. But if they are saved they have repented, which means they have turned away from sin. Do they continue to sin? Sometimes, because on this earth we are still in the natural body and human. But we continually try to follow Christ and do as He commanded. Investigate the Truth for yourself. Read the Bible. You will be amazed - and hopefully convicted. We are saved by grace, "Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:9)

There is nothing wrong with that.
cinemaloon 1 month ago
@cinemaloon Ofcourse you can view others as evil and bomb the shit out of them. But then don't call yourself christian. Because as Bill points out, Jesus taught you otherwise.

CroneGrimalkin 1 month ago
@UKantitheist1 If you had a bit of a brain you would know that you do not need to take the stories in the Bible for REAL. It's based on what's important to people. The Genesis is an Appeal to us to make the world a better world. Maybe it says And so was the everything made But that's not the centre of the whole story ( By the way you need to know that the stories in the Bible are PRE-science. In that time they thought the world was flat...)
bieboo16 1 month ago
@UKantitheist1 And one more thing, because some idiots read the Bible as a DAMN science book, you dont need to generalize it to the Catholic church. The people who read the Bible as real happened stories ( some of them are) are a minority in the Christian group ( almost all centered in the US). And yes the pope is an IDIOT and a retarded ass. Sorry for the people who like the pope, but it's true.
bieboo16 1 month ago
@UKantitheist1 They've been doing that since long before the 50's.
They've absorbed Saturnalia as Christmas, the Ishtar/Eastre festivals as Easter, many festivals for pagan gods as Saints' Days etc, etc and preached every politician, lord and king from the pulpit because it was politically expedient to do so.
TalesOfKrypton 1 month ago
@UKantitheist1 If by "shamelessly hijack" you mean "accept scientific evidence in spite of backlash from your community." How can you chastise a group for being open-minded? Isn't that the exact opposite of what the anti-theism movement is about? Good for the Catholic church embracing evolution.
