My first time cantering without stirrups was on goldy a 16hh ex racehorse it was so fun until i lost my balance and toppled of the side. But my instructor said i had really good balance before i fell flat on my butt
DId this for the first time today, it was of the only things i was a tiny bit worried about, i did it and it felt no different that cantering with stirrups:')!
Man, riding schools should pay more attention to this kind of thing. First time in 2 years? That's a long time. I personally think it's very important to ride without stirrups form time to time to better your position and to be able to ''feel'' the gaits. As for cantering, I myself think it's easier to canter WITHOUT stirrups in the way. You have to make yourself longer in the saddle, with stirrups, people tend to pull up their legs with stirrups. I learned to canter without stirrups...
It's actually quite easy. All you have to do is relax, which would seem strange since the horse is going fast and you're trying not to fall off. It is a little uneven at first, but once you get used to it it's really fun! I tried it yesterday and it's fun.
the first time i proper cantered my horse without stirrups was at the weekend at the gymkhana wen we ended up cantering back without stirrups, then she bucked, so i almost came off :L pretty funny though
the first time i cantered without stirrups it was by accident, I was training this pony, ShyBoy 2 jump and it was a really crappy jump and i lost my stirrups and like then i had 2 like do a deep seat, it was fun though, ShyBoy has a gr8 canter and it was a good lesson so I'm happy
haha ive only been riding for almost a year. but at first when i started cantering my made me ride without stirrups so i wouldnt grip with my knees. it wasnt really that different if you keep your legs streched and heels down, but thats not really easy even with stirrups. haha. so well done for making it look easy (: X
The key is to relax, and have a horse you really trust. It is best to start out on a horse with a really smooth canter and be comfortable cantering with stirrups. It comes really naturaly.
Try not to grip with your knees but grip with your calves.
@walkingamongdead to build your confidence you can start at lower gaits without stirrups. do a walk sesson completely without stirrups. get comfy doing everything you can do at a walk without stirrups. then move up to a trot. once your comfy doing everything at a trot without stirrups...including posting....then start cantering without. you want to have a balanced seat at any gait and riding without will help with balance. you should be able to do everything with and without stirrups
omg i havent cantered ice cream without stirrups since we were with katie and i tried it and he bucked of course and i stayed on i was happy but i can ride buddy without stirrups as you should know
Yea I was there it was amazing that you stayed on. Katie even thought she would of fallen. Buddy is so much fun to canter without stirrups except for he wouldn't keep going.
cantering w/o stirups is easier for me then when i have them

@bigtmylittleponyfan
No when you drop your stirrups you do not have them to depend on and you have to use your seat and core for balance.

horselover1160 3 years ago
Yea Atty has a really short stride so it gets sort of bouncy. I really had to work to make it look smooth for shows.
I have been riding for 7 years.
