How is it possible to diagnose schizophrenia in a child this young? I think there could be a chance that she has an overactive imagination; my sister completely believed she saw an fabricated individual until the age of 5-51/2, and she was never nor needed to be diagnosed as a schizo. If this is this child is indeed as 'sick' as they say, why is she not institutionalized? Obviously the parents struggle on a daily basis....putting her in specialized care would be beneficial wouldn't it?
In schizophrenia you should acknowledge their halluicinations and perceptual disturbances but you really shouldn't reinforce them unless they are command hallucinations that are threatening their safety! How is it possible to diagnose schizophrenia in a child this young? I think there could be a chance that she has an overactive imagination; my sister completely believed she saw an fabricated individual until the age of 5-51/2, and she was never nor needed to be diagnosed as a schizo. If this is this child is indeed as 'sick' as they say, why is she not institutionalized? Obviously the parents struggle on a daily basis....putting her in specialized care would be beneficial wouldn't it?

In schizophrenia you should acknowledge their halluicinations and perceptual disturbances but you really shouldn't reinforce them unless they are command hallucinations that are threatening their safety! I think it's nice that Oprah tells these people's stories but the goal in schizophrenia is to try and get them in touch with relaity not to reinforce their hallucinations like Oprah is doing.
