The solo part in this song is very long, interesting to note that Gary is just unable to be present all the time and do something with himself on stage :)
Cont: From below Space Oddity" 1975 hit # 2 "Ashes to Ashes" 1980 hit #2 "Under Pressure" 1981 hit # 2 Queen and David Bowie "Let's Dance" 1983 hit # 3 "Dancing in the Streets"
and that's just the ones that hit the top 3.. In 1980 Numan topped the album charts with Telekon, although the concurrent singles "We Are Glass", "I Die: You Die" and "This Wreckage" reached #5, #6 and #20, respectively. and of course Cars. So It's a draw as far as Im concerned they both rule.
OK let's see the only thing that I see D.B and G.N having in common is there tight fitting jump suits and they both seemed gayer than a three doller bill, but both Married women? The Coke in the 70's early 80's was so good it made people gay, alot of straight men got poo poo on there gizmoes a few times. I don't see how anyone could hate D.B or G.N and I doubt Bowie hated Gary theres nothing online that I can find about it. As far as one better than the other how many hits did Bowie have.
Numan? I really don't know. I think what he did - that element of 'Saviour Machine' - type things - I think he encapsulated that whole feeling excellently. He really did a good job on that kind of stereotype, but I think therein lies his own particular confinement. I don't know where he intends going or what he intends doing, but I think he has confined himself terrifically. But that's his problem, isn't it?
"I've seen some of his videos. To be honest, I never meant for cloning to be a part of the eighties. He's not only copied me, he's clever and he's got all my influences too. I guess it's the best of luck to him."
@wetwithlife "To be honest, I don't care about him. I don't particularly like his music; he hasn't done anything in the last 20 years that's been relevant to me. I understand why he did it (had Numan removed from The Kenny Everett Show in 1979). I was outselling him four to one, and he must have been surrounded by people constantly telling him his career's in decline. That must have created insecurity."
@paintedship I acctually love it when people prove me wrong because it never happens. HARDI HAR har? No but seriously thank you for the Quote. Peace WWL
I don't get the Bowie comparison honestly. It's the same thing they do with Japan comparing them to Roxy Music. I do know Bowie hated him though much to Gary's disappointment.
Love the song, love Gary Numan. I was there at Wembley, what fond memories I have. Still know the lyrics to most of his songs after all these years....
I SAW THIS IN 1979 OR 80........ and when Gary ;did cars he was driving a little remote car that came out from under the drum riser........... was very cool.
no he wasnt better than bowie, how could he? both made different music at this time, although bowie was a great influence+idol to gary concerning liveperformance etc. i assume.
great version of cars. like the bit where he got the teddy off the stage and threw it in the air. plus love that cheeky grin he flashes at the crowd. all hail numan and his tubeway army!
