The 2nd movie after EARTHQUAKE (74) to be made using the SENSURROUND sound process. The sound effect (explosions etc) were incredible! You could feel it!This trailer is for the non-SENSURROUND version.
i like midway. but god damn it feels like combat footage the movie. i wish they used models or something instead of using so much combat footage it get so god damn annoying .
Looks more like a Japanese victory if you ask me about the frequency of attacks. Besides that, I would never expect a Corsair, a Helldiver or a Hellcat at Midway.
Did they change the names of some of the key participants on the American side: the pilots, or did they just write fictitious alternative character? The stock footage from Tora Tora Tora was obvious even in the trailer. Is this worth seeing? I've seen documentaries on the actual events and the courage and committment on both sides is remarkable. Isn't it crazy that humans can't show the same qualities on a wider basis in peacetime, instead of in hellish situations.
LOL how many movies used that same scene with the B-17 bomber trying to land on one wheel? It was in Tora Tora Tora, Midway, and I think it was also in a movie about General MacArthur.
I used to watch this with my Grandpa all the time who was a WWII navy man. Also I remember Chuck Heston's best line in the movie "..I don't care what color your girl is" hahah sure ya do chuck..sure ya do
I do love this film. For 1976 Midway had it's moments but there was too much stock footage used, very little of it from the actual battle. It needed a budget. The fact that all the principle Japanese players were also english speaking Americans took away from it's realism. Midway was such a miraculous and improbable victory that it's story deserves to be told again. Remake Midway, with real effects. Oh and lose the lame love story and fictious characters.
@Turnback The ironic thing is that Midway was a commercial hit, in fact it was one of the biggest box-office hits in the US in 1977. In fact it made more money than the other war movies that it borrowed footage from like 'Tora-Tora-Tora', 'Away all Boats' & 'The Battle of Britain'.
Let me admit that i loved this movie. I watched it tirelessly growing up (since i was 10) and it spurned my interest in the second world war. I still like to watch it now and again and I get a huge kick out of it, like people do with 1950's westerns. The acting was great (yes). Alot of people may not have the same opinion as me, but I'll say its one of my classics, along with Patton and The Longest Day.
Also I have a VHS copy of a recollection of his experience at the battle with the elderly Ens. George Gay. In it he makes comments about the movie and the way it really was.
I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid. I loved it and have a VHS copy today and still watch it from time to time. Of course I forgive the many less than historical clips and ship types seen in the movie. I joined the Navy myself in part because the battle of Midway....the real battle not the movie.
SupportingActor, hi again. Another of the flim's defaults is the lesser attention given to show the japanese carriers' destruction: there are some fragmentary views, but not large frescoes. I think that's due to budget limits. Regrettable.
But, in spite of all, "Midway" is a film worthy to be seen again & again. It has the 2 things that make a film durable: intelligent script & good music. I enjoy it every time I see it. Thanks again!
SupportingActor many thanks from Lima, Perú. I saw the film in 1976 & now I've got it in DVD. It's a delight to see so many remembered actors: Robert Ito (yes: Dr. Quincy's assistant!!), and future stars: Tom Selleck, Erik Estrada & Pat Morita. For me, James Shigeta deserved to be counted in the starring list, before, indeed, to Mitchum, Wagner or Coburn. His role as Nagumo is superb, but understimated by the director. It lacks a final sequence with him after the battle. Thanks again.
Erik Estrada did this film before he became well-known as "Ponch" on TV. Another one of his earlier movies where he played a small supporting role was the blockbuster AIRPORT 1975.
target42100 this is a great film about five miniuets that changed the course of the pacific war the sacrifice of the american sailors and airman should never be forgotten.
This was the first movie I ever went to. I was raised by Evangelical parents , so I went without thier consent. and had to pay off the Usher ,because it was an R rated movie. I still watch it from time to time, but the version I have on DVD must have been edited by the Politically Correct Police. Favorite parts are when Ensign Gay of TORPEDO 7 is a " cheerleader in a Mae west " for the SPD sqadrons, and also " Chalk one up for Chilibean".
The interesting thing about this film is that when it came out in 1977, it was one of the top-10 US box-office hits of that year. That is ironic as it uses battle-scene footage from other war movies that were commercial flops like 'Tora Tora Tora', 'Away All Boats' and 'The Battle of Britain'. Re: that last film, in the Midway movie, during the scene where Tomanaga's men are making the torpedo attack on the Yorktown, one of the exploding Japanese bombers is actually a German Heinkel !!
@ke4bss Tora Tora Tora was the best Pearl Harbor movie, infact one of the actually pilots who fly in those 2 planes said it was a disgrace to them before he died
Correct!! Robert Ito (aka Sam, Quincys assistant) was the one who played CDR Minoru Genda, the Japanese Air Operations Officer. Genda was a friend and Academy classmate to CDR Mitsuo Fuchida (who led the Pearl Harbor attack force). He was sick with the flu prior to the battle and fuchida had appendicitis - both historical fact !!
@Waistgunner39 Yes you are right. And both Genda and Fuchida survived the war. Genda later worked for NATO intelligence and Fuchida became a Christian and entered the priesthood. And (I think) Chief-of-Staff Kusaka (played here by Pat Morita) also survived the war.
Hollywood needs to do another Battle of Midway, because this one only shows the battle as a Full Blown Carrier War which wasnt the case at the very beginning, because in the Battle of Midway, aircraft from Midway also took part in the attack on the Japanese Invasion Fleet.
@EvilFingers You are right, Midway's Marine fighter force (VMF-221) lost 16 out of 25 fighters and the bomber units they sent to bomb Nagumo's Carrier force (TBFs, B-26s, B-17s, SBDs and Vindicators) lost another 19 aircraft between them. They may have failed to damage any of the Japanese ships but they did keep Nagumo's carriers busy and delay them in launching a strike against the US-Task Forces.
I agree!!! Ford was the best choice (at the time) to play RADM Spruance - he was a definite lookalike for that role - and had been a U.S.Navy Reserve Capt. Ford was born in Canada and became a U.S. citizen. He used the same jacket in Midway that he used in the 1958 film "Torpedo Run" - both films have had a lot of good scenes/parts cut out of them, especially TR.
The editing and special effects did leave much to be desired. Aside from recycling footage from "Tora, Tora, Tora!", if you look closely you'll discover that not only does Tom Selleck appear in the movie, he appears as two different characters! With and without his mustache!
Despite all this, it was miles better than the '75 remake of "King Kong!" which was still in the theatres at the time.
This is my favorite WWII movie!!!!!! I got complete chills watching this trailer just now!!!!!
The battle scenes, in my opinion, are superior to any WWII battle scenes from any WWII movie (I'm not just talking aboot the recycled scenes in this movie, but the original ones as well).
Tora! Tora! Tora! is probably my second favorite. The ending with Yamamoto saying his infamous line ALWAYS jolts my body with chills because of its awesomeness!!!!!
Well one of the few good american movies from the 70ies. But many fotages are from Okinava 1945. All who know some about the paficic campain know which clips i mean.
Tom Selleck had a small speaking role as a USN lieutenant stationed on Midway Island during the battle. He has a couple of scenes with Larry Pennell, and one of Selleck's lines is "They creamed us!" He appeared in this movie without his trademark moustache.
I watched that movie in cinema, in Brčko...
That year, or the next one... When it was going on for the first time...
