Weller never sold in or sold out ..this asshole calling himself the modfather today should really go back to the late 80s and see what damage he himself helped inflict on the charts with this throw away rubbish...of course we cant forget the Acid house phase Weller went through as well
Always a great song, and yes, it was a cover, but this vid has always bothered me.
I saw it "live" on (I think) the comedy program Three of a Kind (might be wrong) back in the early 80's. Weller seemed to be trying to deflect attention to himself by having other lead singers. It didn't work and to me is a bit squirming. Whatever happened to "Tracy" or whatever her name was? And I also thought the first lead singer was a bloke.
@bootjangler Tracy Young is now a DJ on a radio station in Essex, she is just about to release an album. The male singer is from The Questions, signed to Wellers "Respond" label. Met the guys, they were really great. Just think having Paul Weller behind them didn't do them any favours - a real shame as they had great talent.
Respond was a great label and The Questions made some great records. I think this version of Harvest is better than the Isley's, which is saying something. It just seems more full of youth, passion and summer breeze. I too recorded this off the tele at the time, isn't it from the Lenny Henry show or something?
They're The Questions, one of the other groups (along with Tracie) who Weller signed to his ill-fated Respond records label in '83. Looking at this video I can see why they didn't set the world alight. Weller and Tracie sound ace though, I love this song.
That first guy is either trying too hard and/or is not breathing correctly,or else not using enough diaphragm support.I guess he imporved by the time they did "Everchanging Moods".
If my every changing memory serves me correctly this was taken from the Lenny Henry show he did with Tracy Ullman Three of a Kind and did Weller call this particular gathering the Council Collective?
Man, I love this vid, as much as I admire Weller, Talbot, Lee and White during the days of "My Ever Changing Moods" to "Luck" to "Heavens Above" to "It's a Very Deep Sea." Say what you will, but I *adore* this band in all its permutations, and am quite sad indeed to see its passing.
I think this track was taken from the Lenny Henry show on bbc1 ?? I think the whole band were trying tom impress Weller some how quite cringe worthy !!!
They do sound a tad like an 'over zealous' school sixth form band particularly at the beginning. It's interesting to note that as soon as Weller's vocals kick in they sound infinitely more professional and accomplished ..this was a golden era for Weller as his singing voice at this particular time was in my opinion the best it's ever been (a lot better than it is now) and this track perfectly illustrates it..
The bass player Paul Barry is from Edinburgh originally(I knew his younger brother very well).Paul actually went on to do much bigger things most notable would be as one of the main writers on Chers "believe " album which is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. He also has written for artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Lionel Richie and Tina Turner to name but a few.He and Weller got on well after The Questions supported The Jam in Edinburgh back in the early 80's.
It would be cool to have some of those tracks by the Questions posted up here. Tear Soup, Groove line, Price You Pay, Tuesday Sunshine, etc. They were a pretty hip group.
I remember this, it is taken from the 1983 Tracy Ullman UK comedy seres Three Of A Kind. They had some great Uk soul funk groups as guests including I-Level and others. This was a one off appearence with Tracy Young, The Quetions and Mick and Paul under the Style Council name. I think originally Weller contrived that they should be like the 60s Motown's touring group, a band of musicians with different vocalists. It's great!
never seen this before nor didn't even know it was done. Superb stuff. It's clear though that whilst a galliant effort by the Questions, Weller & Tracie certainly make this version. Nice.
Does anyone have any other clips from the Questions or Tracie? I really dug their stuff. They really didn't get the airplay out here in Los Angeles, but thanks to the import stores back in the day I could buy all the 45s. LPs and 12" singles from Paul Weller's Respond label. The Questions "Belief" album is FANTASTIC! Maybe I'll have to dig out those records and post them all here.
The girl is Tracey Young (had a major crush on her back in the 80s, lol). She did back-up vocals for the Style Council for a while, and she released a couple of solo singles too.
Just fabulous!! You don't happen to have any video or MP3 of 'The Questions' do you? (Paul Barry the Bass palyer who sings on this track first was their lead singer). Would SOOOOOO love to find some of their stuff.

Yeah, that first "guy", I did recognize as a chick, was quite good. The second chick musta been screwing someone in the band. She wasn't that great.
Oh, and why did it abruptly stop when it was really getting good? WTF?
