i think the atheist symbol should be a continous a starting from right , points to the top, and downward around the a to complete the symbol ( which would be a incomplete cirlce praticaly). the A wouldnt have a middle cross as you see here^ but would have the adom symbol in the middle. the A represents atheism, the incomplete circle would be the circle of life and the adom representing science. my vote is for that symbol

This video is very inspiring. I can see atheist coming to diferent conclusions about wearing a scarlet A. To some it may be a target, or it may make us seem more like a religion or cult. On the other hand, atheists are often looked down upon. I rarely talk to random people on the streets. If I saw somebody wearing the scarlet A, I would definatly take time to start a conversation with them, let them know that I'm one more person who thinks the same way they do.
as a very proud atheist, i understand that a symbol may be UNNECESSARY, but i honestly wish i had some way of displaying my views such as, say, on a t-shirt. this would allow people to recognize that, "hey - there are actually a lot of atheists out there - maybe i could learn more about what they believe." - anything that can further the education of a fellow human i see no harm in. HOWEVER, to me, a scarlet A = adulterer lol. i like the circle/null set symbol. it's simple and universal.
Yes, cruel if he does exist he is cruel, "he is everywhere","he is perfect" , "he knows everything", "its all part of his divine plan", all of those typical religious answers just give us more reasons to not believe he/they (yes because your god wasn't even the first one to "exist"), if he is everywhere he is "evil" couz he doesn't stop terrible things to happen to innocent people(religious or nonreligious), if he is perfect we wouldn't be here couz he would have created us perfectly, flawless
To any people who call themselves atheists who see this, you still have my respect and unconditional love, I would die for you if I needed to n wish you no harm.
With that atheists have already lost cuz the human nature will never die as God will never die.
I'm sorry Shaggy but in name of all atheists, and atheism, I have to answer you.
I'm sorry did you say "God will never die." He is already dead my friend, in the moment we contradicted your precious bible, but still you won't listen to reason, maybe your just afraid of death. Reason is religion's fearless enemy. You see... we are closing doors for religion and one day all of them will be closed and locked up for good. How can you seriously believe that a god exists, specially when he is so cruel
He would even make a perfect world, oh thats right i forgot its heaven huh?Oh sending people to hell how MACHO of him!! If everything is part of his divine plan then some people are already destined to go to hell, how nice of him he such a great pal! ALL THIS AND MORE! HELL ALOT MORE! THESE ARE OUR REASONS TO DOUGHT HE EXISTS! We are closing doors to religion, soon one day there will be no more doors left to close, you should get out while you can because one day you wont be able to and you
Atheism in my opinion is as far from the truth as you can get, some people fear the truth n will go any lengths to avoid it, but hopefully before their lives are over they'll face their fear and hold the inescapable truth of God.

Does that mean that we need a different symbol for each and every god we don't believe in?
I guess that we could market Mohammad with a red line through him to the Christians, but I don't think that the converse would work to the Muslims, as they think that Jesus was a Muslim prophet. But we could market a cross with a line through it to the Muslims.
Reminds me of the book "The Scarlet Letter" which also happened to represent an A, though it stood for Adultery in the puritan community in the novel.
fuckin' A ! Although it is a bit absurd to wear a symbol for something you have no belief in. If you want an Atheist symbol just use the Jesus fish with legs on it. Go Darwin !
Many Atheists are very proud of their Atheism. I had to struggle to get free from religion, so Atheism means a lot to me. A symbol doesn't have to belong to any religion. Religion does NOT have a monopoly on symbolism.
you can still be an atheist and believe in: Homeopathy Psychic energy Fate Karma Superstition Afterlife Magnet healing and whatever, there are 1000s of delusions I'd like to wear a symbol that portrays complete rationality, allegiance to the scientific method and logical thinking. Peace
(cont.) what most people perceive us to be (immoral, evil, anarchists, etc.), I can't see how, at this point in society, purposely segregating ourselves from people with faith can do anything but bring harm and discontent. Hopefully I'm mistaken! Maybe the numbers will prove this. It would be inspiring to walk outside one day and see a sea of Scarlet A's worn by the likes of judges and politicians. I just think it is still too premature in society to think that we would be treated as equals.
First off let me say that I respect Mr. Dawkins and literary works. I have passed them on too friends so that they may have a more educated understanding in atheism. However, as an atheist, I'm hesitant to adopt any type of symbol or slogan to seperate ourselves from other people who may or may not believe in some sort of supernatural power. While I understand that the idea behind the Scarlet A is to invite others to learn more about atheists and to understand that we are far from the (cont.)
Atheists supporting government neutrality is one (good) thing. But few, at least on the Net, would stop there. You can easily find atheist hate rants supporting outlawing religion and oppression of believers. The hate is so thick, Ted Haggard himself must be secretly proud. Besides, if you think this life is all we have, why waste it in inflammatory arguments? Shouldn't you be out having sex, drinking, smoking, partying, etc. so you can have fun before the big one comes?
"Dawkins are not spreading atheism, but anti-theism - to scorn the very people who hold theistic belief. This leads to intolerance and the eventual contravention of moral principles."
"And for another note, Atheists don't have to oppose the faith in god, they could just keep it for themeselves like I would expect religious people will do themselves." Atheists will oppose whoever opposes them, it's the natural thing to do. Leave us alone, and we'll do the same to you. Do not treat us with disrespect, we demand to have the same rights as a religious person. As long as these things do not happen, we will not 'keep it to ourselves' but we will speak up, and fight.
I have my pin that I wear on my name badge at work, which is a catholic run facility of all things. Pple that ask what it's for I tell them. So far I haven't gone on the carpet with the higher ups.
Isn't funny how non-belief needs a symbol much like the symbol that denotes every other religion in the world? As an agnostic, I see that radical atheists like Dawkins are no different than radical Christian evangelists - both have an agenda to pursuade people to share their side as their own. Radical atheists like Dawkins are not spreading atheism, but anti-theism - to scorn the very people who hold theistic belief. This leads to intolerance and the eventual contravention of moral principles.
I would disagree with that. Although anti-theistic stand points have been taken these are for the vast majority aimed at the evangelical and immoral religious practices of those I think nearly the whole world can agree are morally corrupt. Dawkins and others are more representing the secular interests of society at an intellectual level but require these sound bites eg book titles to grab headlines and column inches to highlight this.
debate with theists in a very friendly manor and if anything actually promoted more harmony between moderates of all sides. I have also seen him get stuck in to heated argument with those immoral and intolerant people who daemonise others. I think that should be the case for society at large when it comes to those who push 'morals' on others that are backwards.
The symbols on the other hand are a way to show our collective power in society so we are not ignored.
I want to know what council decided upon this symbol because it's pretty bad. It's not the slightest bit imposing and is not memorable at all. It just looks like a pussified version of the anarchy A.
This is an awesome idea. Heck, a cross is just a letter T...what's wrong with a letter A? I sincerely hope to find people wearing this and I'll keep my eyes peeled. I've always wished for an atheist "church." Not praise and worship, but some place to hang out and maybe sing some jingles ("Imagine no religion...") and meet some people. It'd be awesome.
I display the A on my website and as a pin on my coat or jacket. I really enjoy wearing it, makes me personally feel more like I can look theists and other groups in the eye with regards to openness about my convictions. I must say however I feel it is also a burden of responsibility. Making myself a would be representative of atheism. I am aware that some people would judge my convictions along with me... I still love it though Great Idea.
We atheists are not suited to hierarcheal organisation. A common analogy is that trying to organise atheists is like trying to herd cats, we are far to independent and intelligent to follow the group
I dont think that they are trying to form a hierarcheal organisation but just not fear the religious, be true to yourself and such. Like the gay pride thing but with your beliefs, either way do what you think is right.
Trouble is I am not sure if I'd like to be more noticed. The religious nutballs tend to have more weapons close at hand than I do... and the will to use them without pausing to think.
You would have thought that if they truley believed that their god would punish us they would just sit back and laugh at us, apparently their convoctions arent that strong they fear the questions we ask and so must silence us.
Ludicourse! I am an atheist, and I think this is just an act of stupidity. We atheists have nothing in common but the share of disbelief in god. We're not organised group or movement nor we should ever become. I got out from religion because of it's bounds and ridicioules princples and beliefs. Don't tell me now that Atheists are getting a symbol because religion has. It'll become rules, rituals and all that kind of bullshit I've been subjected to in Religion. Please stop.
It's just a way to show your identity to others... and of course completely optional. Not a rule. Some have enjoyed forming groups of other atheists and like becoming involved in politics. Such as humanist and atheist groups...
My mother is an atheist in her 80's, she said to me the other day that she wished she had faith just so she could share something with her friends or make new ones! ... Perhaps atheists do need groups, as religion provides, to give that belonging feeling without the bullshit! ... Think about it!
Or perhaps you could ge a good child and find her some non-religious things to do, there is more to do than sit in a church. Your mother has donated many years of her life to you, be kind take her to see countdown or helo her join a club!
anthwhite91 - I'm not sure you understood my message. I am a strong atheist as I suspect you are! I am simply saying that it is the unity that religion brings that atheism lacks and this should be retified! You seem to have a strange tone for a cousin of atheism!
Oh, it sounded like you thought there wasnt much for elderly women to do but go to church type events. Im all for the atheists joining together! We do need more groups, a single atheist can hold an arguement with a church of christians, think of what we can do together!
Now to your message, You're half right, after abandoning religion the atheists are not really united with anybody, which I think that's how it should be. Atheism didn't come to replace religion, many atheists left religion only because they hate religion. I think atheists should form other groups or organisation but of course, it shouldn't be about a damn god or beliefs.Atheists are just non-theists, they are not supposed to even oppose religion, anti-religious Atheists do
In principle we agree, but although atheists are non-theists who said we cannot oppose religion? When I am told to go to hell for my non belief or evolution is a lie because god forbids its study or I will be put to death when religious law takes over etc, etc ... I think I have a duty to say something!
I disagree, religion can be atheistic (Buddahism) or about UFOs (Rael, scientology etc) there are plenty of religions that doesn't match the disbelief of atheists. And for another note, Atheists don't have to oppose the faith in god, they could just keep it for themeselves like I would expect religious people will do themselves.
True, but many Atheists oppose religion in soceity from passing new laws that are specifically aimed at boosting a certain religous power, or trying to combat the brainwashing such as forcing creationism into american schools.
An atheist don't have to do it. that's my point. Atheist is just a man who doesn't believe in god. There are theistic scientists that think evolution is real and it should be taught at school instead of creation. There are people who think that religious rules are too strict to be some sort of any obligation it's not about atheists it's about modren civilized people. That is all.
Read the definition for Religion:"A religion is a set of beliefs and practices, often centered upon specific supernatural and moral claims about reality, the cosmos, and human nature, and often codified as prayer, ritual, and religious law. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience." From wikipedia
@DaxterFan I disagree! It depends what you want... I want there to be progres, if you don't that's fine, your choice. I think however, it's time to act, some of this nonsense has gone on far to long and people like me, want to see a change.
The name of this beautiful piece of music is "One Man´s Dream" by Yanni. I absolutely love it! I think the music perfectly matches outcampaign message which is Love and reason.
Interesting. This is a very uncomfortable way to get this across, though, I read two or three words quickly and to stare at a boring screen of "You could also..." makes me want to go do something else. There's got to be a better way for you to present this.
How about embedding some scarlet A's and a description of what to do with them scrolling across the bottom of my song 'The Last Taboo'? (see my channel)
there's already an atheist symbol you idiot, look it up on google images. it's an incomplete atom with an "a" in the middle.

Athiesm needs no symbol. This crap needs to stop. All a universally adopted symbol will do is futher the idea that athiesm is a religeon.
I am really dissapointed in Dawkins for adopting this.
All the points made by this video are from the perception of an open-mided person, religeous people will see this as a uniform the enemy is wearing.
Let athiesm be represented by ideas and people who can express them with skill. Don't wear a target that will announce an adversarial stance.

People that live today should
work together in creating a better world
for our descendants.
Had our ancestors not fucked things up
in the past, we wouldn't be obliged to
'debate' these matters and 'waste' our
lifetimes trying to 'fix' stuff.

Exuse me, 'leads to' ?!
This has been actively happening for
centuries to Atheistic people, AND
people of 'different' indoctrinations.
Dawkins contributes to an attempt to
encourage many people to freely admit
they are Atheist, making 'god'- the concept
a widely debatable issue.

Cypherus21 4 years ago
I would disagree with that. Although anti-theistic stand points have been taken these are for the vast majority aimed at the evangelical and immoral religious practices of those I think nearly the whole world can agree are morally corrupt. Dawkins and others are more representing the secular interests of society at an intellectual level but require these sound bites eg book titles to grab headlines and column inches to highlight this.
I have watched Dawkins in particular interview/
thwaiteduck 4 years ago
debate with theists in a very friendly manor and if anything actually promoted more harmony between moderates of all sides. I have also seen him get stuck in to heated argument with those immoral and intolerant people who daemonise others. I think that should be the case for society at large when it comes to those who push 'morals' on others that are backwards.
The symbols on the other hand are a way to show our collective power in society so we are not ignored.
thwaiteduck 4 years ago
I want to know what council decided upon this symbol because it's pretty bad. It's not the slightest bit imposing and is not memorable at all. It just looks like a pussified version of the anarchy A.
petah2001 4 years ago
Good symbols usually are ones that become popular and people will recognize...The scarlet A is rapidly being used by many atheists.
richarddawkinsvid 4 years ago

Were can you get these pins? Or is it a home-made jobbey?

We atheists are not suited to hierarcheal organisation. A common analogy is that trying to organise atheists is like trying to herd cats, we are far to independent and intelligent to follow the group
SumRandomRem 4 years ago
I dont think that they are trying to form a hierarcheal organisation but just not fear the religious, be true to yourself and such. Like the gay pride thing but with your beliefs, either way do what you think is right.

Very impressive! I am an Iranian Atheist. I've just put the scarlet A in the corner of my profile picture.
Bikhodayi 4 years ago 2
Trouble is I am not sure if I'd like to be more noticed. The religious nutballs tend to have more weapons close at hand than I do... and the will to use them without pausing to think.
BibleMaggot 4 years ago
You would have thought that if they truley believed that their god would punish us they would just sit back and laugh at us, apparently their convoctions arent that strong they fear the questions we ask and so must silence us.
anthwhite91 4 years ago
Thanks.
DaxterFan 4 years ago
It's just a way to show your identity to others... and of course completely optional. Not a rule. Some have enjoyed forming groups of other atheists and like becoming involved in politics. Such as humanist and atheist groups...

My mother is an atheist in her 80's, she said to me the other day that she wished she had faith just so she could share something with her friends or make new ones! ... Perhaps atheists do need groups, as religion provides, to give that belonging feeling without the bullshit! ... Think about it!
Darwinsgift 4 years ago
Or perhaps you could ge a good child and find her some non-religious things to do, there is more to do than sit in a church. Your mother has donated many years of her life to you, be kind take her to see countdown or helo her join a club!
anthwhite91 4 years ago
anthwhite91 - I'm not sure you understood my message. I am a strong atheist as I suspect you are! I am simply saying that it is the unity that religion brings that atheism lacks and this should be retified! You seem to have a strange tone for a cousin of atheism!
Darwinsgift 4 years ago
Oh, it sounded like you thought there wasnt much for elderly women to do but go to church type events. Im all for the atheists joining together! We do need more groups, a single atheist can hold an arguement with a church of christians, think of what we can do together!
anthwhite91 4 years ago
First, it's DaxterFan.
Now to your message, You're half right, after abandoning religion the atheists are not really united with anybody, which I think that's how it should be. Atheism didn't come to replace religion, many atheists left religion only because they hate religion. I think atheists should form other groups or organisation but of course, it shouldn't be about a damn god or beliefs.Atheists are just non-theists, they are not supposed to even oppose religion, anti-religious Atheists do
DaxterFan 4 years ago
In principle we agree, but although atheists are non-theists who said we cannot oppose religion? When I am told to go to hell for my non belief or evolution is a lie because god forbids its study or I will be put to death when religious law takes over etc, etc ... I think I have a duty to say something!
Darwinsgift 4 years ago
Didn't say that atheists can't oppose religion, I meant we can't say that atheism IS opposing religion.
DaxterFan 4 years ago
Well it aposes the idea of a god, so it does oppose religion as a whole.
anthwhite91 4 years ago
I disagree, religion can be atheistic (Buddahism) or about UFOs (Rael, scientology etc) there are plenty of religions that doesn't match the disbelief of atheists. And for another note, Atheists don't have to oppose the faith in god, they could just keep it for themeselves like I would expect religious people will do themselves.
DaxterFan 4 years ago
True, but many Atheists oppose religion in soceity from passing new laws that are specifically aimed at boosting a certain religous power, or trying to combat the brainwashing such as forcing creationism into american schools.
anthwhite91 4 years ago
An atheist don't have to do it. that's my point. Atheist is just a man who doesn't believe in god. There are theistic scientists that think evolution is real and it should be taught at school instead of creation. There are people who think that religious rules are too strict to be some sort of any obligation it's not about atheists it's about modren civilized people. That is all.
DaxterFan 4 years ago
"I disagree, religion can be atheistic"
Wouldn't that be 'spirituality' ?
To have a religion implies to have
believe or faith in one or more deities,
I might be wrong though, not entireally sure.
