Wow!! Screw Terence! Donald Harrison on tenor?!?! What a treat. By far the most talented AND underrated of all the musicians to come from this era. Terence is still copying his nouveau swing style. Harrison was the ONLY innovator from this era.
Wow ... now THAT is the sound of a trumpet ... resonant / personal and of great beauty. Really dig his playing ... clean and smooth ... effortless mastery. Great relaxed sound love it ... thanks Terence Blanchard
Just read some of these silly, analytical comments below...kills the art of music, of feeling, creating. No wonder so many doers never speak about there music. They just create and feel it. There is no scientific method in jazz or any form of music. The best musicians play by the spirit and soul not entirely by force fed technique.
No, music theory does not kill music, it helps it. What kills the music is when musicians are not able to let go of their technical thinking during a performance and simply create what they feel. Several of the best trumpeters in the country (wynton for one) told me that you want to make music theory second nature, so you can let go and perform at a concert without having to think technically since the scales, harmonies, progressions etc are already deeply engrained.
jlevinson6, what an ignorant comment. You're saying because of a company you don't like means that Terence nor Wynton can play anymore? Wynton and Terence are two of the top trumpet players today period. Get over the whole Monette thing. Life will go on I promise. Why don't you play a non-Monette trumpet and play a tune with one of them and sound better than them. Since Monette killed their playing, you could probably do better than them I'm sure.
It is extreme to say that monette "killed his playing", but I do agree with jlevinson that terrences sound is NOTICEABLY better before he started playing on a monette, which seemed to make his sound less full, focused, and more cramped. I have noticed that for several players who have strarted playing monettes. Terrence's sound here is better than I have heard it on his monette.
That is truth to a certain point. The problem is that Wynton & Terence are what I like to call sound chasers. Wynton chasing the sound of Louis Armstrong & Terence that of Wynton & Chet Baker some trumpet players mess up their own natural tonality, just to sound like someone else. And that in the long run doesn't work for every one.
Hmm I can't really agree with that. Wynton has always sounds good. Terrence has always sounded good. Its just that Dave monette introduced them to those damn horns and mouthpieces it gave them a better sound then what they had before. But I do agree it did mess up their original tonality, BUT i dont care about their sounds i care more about their style.
You really think that Wynton and Terence are trying just sound like Louis and Chet? I'm sure both have heavily influenced them, but when i hear wynton, i know its wynton, and when I hear terence, i know its terence. Just like when i hear Louis, i know its him, and when i hear chet, i know its him. Honestly, i feel that wynton and terence are far enough along in their artistic development to have their own sound.
I'm not so sure about that, whenever I hear either Terence or Wynton, both have such a distinctive sound i know exactly who it is. And i think that they use equipment like Monette horns and mouthpieces because they physically suit them and they appreciate the original sound that they can produce with it.
Both this guys are very well studied in jazz. They at times go into styles that some may like less then others.Chet Baker could only wish to play as well as Wynton or Terence. I enjoy Chet Baker playing , but he's more of a fore runner to easy listening . No heavy weight.
@jlevinson6 Not sure what that means. I can probably identify Wynton's sound more readily than that of any other trumpet player. I also really happen to like his sound. And IMO he keeps getting better.
@jlevinson6 Why don't you trust Wynton and Terrence to pick there own gear? I'm pretty sure they know far more about jazz and their own playing than you ever will. To say that the young lions like Terrence and Wynton are only copying the sounds of the jazz greats that came before them is absurd. Jazz is always growing and changing. Jazz musicians are always growing and changing as well. If you want to try to accuse Dave Monette of "ruining" anyone's playing, than I suggest you open your ears.
@jlevinson6 You are so full of shit it's scary! The Monette tone is warmer and fuller and suits both of them perfectly. You've left this same horseshit on how many videos now??
I grew up listening to these guys. I was too young to ever see them in concert togeather. This is the only video of them I have ever seen. Maybe someone else has something they can post. Brings back memories

How long ago was this clip? I've noticed that Terence is using the standard bowl-shaped embouchure instead of his signature conical one.

Except....NOT!! lol, you ever played a monette? It was not only the best sounding, but the easiest playing horn I'd ever tried in my life.
That aside, I feel that their playing has improved greatly since they were younger. They were amazing back then, but they're GODS now.

I don't nessasarily disagree, but what did he do to "ruin" it?

@jlevinson6 Terence is actually playing Monette equipment in this video. It's just an early model
MCroach1 1 year ago
@MCroach1 It looks for all the world like a Bach, perhaps with a different tuning slide.
I know Monette started out by modifying other horns though, and that definitely looks like an early Monette mouthpiece........
